Needed a microSD card 2 updates ago on my 1350LMT

Yes, really annoying that it didn't fit, bought a 16GB, but probably only need 4GB..

Garmin Express is awful

Garmin 2350LMT Windows XP

I've joined the ranks of the disgusted with Garmin's Windows software.

Saturday, I launched Garmin Express. It said it needed to update and it proceeded to install Net Framework 4.03 without prompting and crashed my Libreoffice spreadsheet.

Then I launched it and it said my device was up to date.

I ran mapupdater and it updated the maps just fine, but it crashed all my TSR's INCLUDING my antivirus - (but I think GE did that and WinXP just hadn't updated the systray yet.)

And GE set itself to load on startup again.

CNNA 2014.20

Just as an update. I D/L onto my 3490 with no problems and have not had any glitches or odd routings at all so far.

time to update..

time to update..

What program.

CN 2014.20

Thanks for reminder. I updated my 2555LMT yesterday night. Job done flawlessly via Garmin Express. No bug, no error message at all.
Note: PC running Windows 8.1 Preview version.

Be sure to update the Garmin Express Application

Garmin evidently recognizes that the Garmin Express application is buggy and in need of work because they continue to release frequent updates for the application. I believe the current version is 2.3.8.0 so be sure to update the application itself before downloading GPS firmware or map updates. Also, I have noticed that it won't immediately detect a map update particularly if your schedule is to search and download updates overnight 10 pm - 5 a.m. in the app. It took me several "check for updates" attempts before it stopped saying your device is up to date when I knew it needed the 2014.20 map update. The new Express version has an interface overhaul. Hopefully that fixes some of these glitches.

Updated OK

I updated with Garmin Express last night without a problem. It just took 6 hours due to the really slow WiFi at my current location...

Not for me ...

ptownoddy wrote:

It you have an outdated version of GE, it tells you it has to download the latest version before you can check for updated maps and firmware. Then, in my case, it told me the 2350LMT was up to date. I probably checked twice, but I can't say I checked "several" times.

Thank you, that makes total sense now.

Finally

After 4 map updates, an interstate exit in my area has been added to the newest map.

always slow here

I have a hardwired cable connection (55Mbps) and the map updates are always painfully slow.

Strange Addition

On 355 in the Chicago Subburbs heading South towards Joliet the new map update wanted me to exit the Freeway and then return to it on the next entrance which is across the intersection. I saw this at Austin also near the airport.

Plan to try the update tonight on my 1490 and 780. Should be very interesting based on past experience and the comments here.

It would be nice if Garmin stopped fixing things and created a new installer that understood the SD card slot....

Given that your two nuvis are 2GB models and will need a SD card to install the largest City Navigator NA map that the devices are entitled to receive, your updates will be offered an installation to SD:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

I suggest using GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express and ask that you get back to us if you're not offered the "map to SD" option on either of your devices.

Hmm, I saw the same with myGarmin today (at least--it shows an update available on devices now with 2014.10) but when I run GarminMapUpdater, it shows my GPS to have the latest map.

Can someone confirm that 2014.20 is actually being installed for someone?

[Update] GarminMapUpdater 3.2.2 now is letting me download CNNANT 2014.20!

my nuvi 2597 shows this is current update

Sorted

GE loaded mine just fine. Had to use an SD card to get more of Europe on my old 370.
Lifetime updates has definitely paid off for me.

Strange

I used GE (mac computer) to download to nuvi 760, but had to use map updater for 3597. What gives?

Nuvi 660 Map Update Issue

9/14/13

I am trying to update my maps to 2014.20

When I used the "updater" it listed the update available as 2013.40 which is already installed on the NUVI. Got the update anyway as I thought with the new install I may then be able to get 2014.20 Side note: My lifetime maps were originally U.S. and Canada. A while back when I updated I only received North America 2013,40. I really didn't need Canada at that time, however I wanted the update so I went for it.

Now here's where it gets even more confusing. On "My Garmin" it shows that the map update failed and only offers 2013.40. Well, it did not fail as that is what I am running now.

When I use Garmin Express it tells me that an update is available and it is U.S. and Canada 2014.20.... great right? Wrong. The page lets me choose to back up my and lets me check the box that I have read the agreement. Okay, fine. However, the install (or download, don't remember the exact wording) icon/button is "dead." It does nothing.

I have tried to update numerous times with no success. I even put the Garmin Express app in the trash and installed a new version. I have also restarted my NUVI and Mac several time to clean up any glitches. Nothing! Anybody?

Edit 9/15/13 @ 0530 hours:

Well I finally got one of Nuvi's (I have two) to update to 2014.20. After several tries I was successful using Garmin Express. Three or four times I was able to progress to file 149 of 150 files on the download, it just refused to finish. Now just FYI, Garmin Express shows my maps current with 2014.20, however when I check the map status using Garmin Updater it shows my maps as "up to date" with version 2013.40. By the way I checked via my Nuvi and I do have version 2014.20 installed....... knock on wood.

I will get back to all of you once I try to update my other Nuvi with Canada, U.S 2014.20.

I can't wait to see what version it says i have installed and if an update is available.

Stay tuned.........

On Edit 9/16/13 @ 1145 houes:

Well I updated the maps on my other Nuvi 660 this morning. interesting....... map updater stated that my maps were up to date. Not. So, I went with Garmin express and it only listed the "Lower 48 2014.20 as the available update. So where did the "Canada and North America" map go, the one that was listed as an update yesterday. Bottom Iine ended up using Garmin Express for both upgrades and evidently Canada doesn't exist any longer. My regrets to all of our Canadian friends. smile

One more thing. This mornings install went pretty well speed wise and there were no stalls. One small glitch, I got a pop-up warning indicating that I had tried to quit the update and warning me of the possible problems of this action. Well, I didn't even touch the computer during the update, where that came from is anybody's guess. Thankfully, I was able to cancel the "quit command" and the install completed in a timely manner with no further surprises.

So that's my update story. Now you won't feel alone should experience similar adventures during future updates.

Thanks for listening.

I respectfully disagree. I use MapUpdater exclusively and have NEVER had a problem. I don't even bother to go to any Garmin Website to see if there is an update available. I wait until folks here announce a new version and I update my Nuvi 1450. I click a MapUpdater icon on my desktop and away I go. I update my Nuvi, my daughter's Nuvi, and my sister's Nuvi with no issues whatsoever.

Garmin Express? Now that's a different issue.

Well .20 still sucks. I hit some places in Minneapolis MN and Fargo ND on my trip last week and it still makes three right turns (each going two blocks) instead of one left turn in four different spots. Garmin has been doing this since my 330 and the best one is it takes me to a dead end street in Fargo a mile short of Costco.

Someone has a great sense of humour on the dead end...there is a sigh beside the "DEAD END" sign saying...

The routing has been discussed before.

The algorithm for the calculation figures it is easier and less time to do right turns than wait on traffic for left turns.

I was on I-90 in Lake County last night and the map still showed 65 mph as the speed limit.

So...right turn drive three blocks, right turn drive two blocks and right turn drive four blocks, right turn drive two blocks is an algorithmic way to save time instead of a left turn and drive one block?

Must be the same people who wrote the garmin update software. lol

Less views on large JVC

Has anyone else noticed that there are less junction views on the large D3060110A. I use a set destination to check the views with my simulator on every time I update my LMT1490 and there is now less photo views.

Also the photos are less realistic. More blurred backgrounds on the photos.

On recent trips to MO and WI, there are more views than last year. Although I have had some other problems when using simulation mode.

Been doing this a long time and know the tricks, but thanks for the suggestions. The SD cards have been required for a long time and the 8 GB has worked fine for a few years.

Express worked fine, though I always have MapUpdater handy just in case.

214.20 and Garmin Express

I updated software and downloaded 2014.20 through Garmin Express for my two GPS units, the primary being a 3590 LMT. Despite never having had a problem in the past, both failed to load properly. After reloading twice, I called Garmin Assistance. First level support recognized that the maps were not loading properly. He transferred me to a very knowledgeable software engineer who logged onto my system, inspected the unit and all files. He also had nbo luck getting it to load with express even though mall files were present. To make a two hour story short, he deleted certain files on my Garmin, opened up Map Updater and reloaded the files onto the GPS.

MAP UPDATER WORKED when Express failed multiple times. He told me he only uses Map Updater for his personal updates. I was very impressed with his knowledge of the program and GPS products. He said the problem was with Express but could not identify the bigger issue without more review. The problem seemed to be that 2014.20 would download to the computer and GPS but would not update saying Map Data Unavailable. It turns out that the 3590 needs three different files to operate but only two of the three downloaded to the GPS, it would not download the 2014.20 ALL map.

After dealing with Garmin Technical Support, I have a very high degree of respect for this software person. I learned never to use Express, I have deleted it from my computer. One little tidbit of information I learned is that Express always runs in the background using processor power where Map Updater is on demand only. If I understood him correctly, Map Updater downloads the program directly from the Garmin server where Express downloads the program to your computer and updates the download as necessary, (sometimes causing problems that cannot be resolved by the end user.

2014.20 highways with North south east or west included

I have a 255 and I noticed one thing on some high ways the 255 which is still a 2009 map includes the direction of the highway like NJ 17 -N , while 2014.20 just says driving on NJ-17 sucks because those directions are important

Thanks for the info,

Thanks for the info, Updating mine now. With this pace, we'll get 2015 map before the year end. razz

Glad garmin is releasing the larg JCV file again.. Does anyone know where I can get the large JCV file for the 2014.20 Europe maps? I can't find it on Garmins site..

If I recall correctly there isn't a large JCV file for City Navigator Europe.

Am I Wrong In My Thinking?

t923347 wrote:

I would tend to think there would be both a small JCV and large for European Maps.

Considering there are European Nuvi owners for older Nuvi's that use full screen they would need the larger JCV file. Those with spilit screen would use the smaller one.

Europe JCV

Yes, but it could be that Garmin does not make the large Europe JCV file available as a separate download. The European 1xxx nuvi models came with more internal storage than the US models. So maybe Garmin has not had to face the short on storage problem with European customers.

Haven't noticed alot of changes in my area with this latest update but I am sure there are a few.

Is this normal?

I was not traveling so I did not download 2014.10 to my Nuvi 855. When I downloaded (to my computer using Garmin Express) and then selected eastern USA/Canada to transfer (using Mapscource), the process seemed OK.

I then disconnected the Nuvi from the computer and turned it on to see if the current maps did transfer. The map info showed BOTH 2014.10 and 2014.20 being on the NUVI.

I am sure that I never updated to 2013.10 but it seems to be there now. I know I can deselect it but is this normal...to also download the previous maps?

When I connect the NUVI to the computer, I can only see one gmapprom.img dated July 16, 2013 with a size of 1,957,248KB. Is this the date for the most recent map?

Comments?

Transferring a map using Mapsource doesn't remove the old map. Use the Map Updater and it will replace the old map.

Agreed.

And for "virtually lost:"

-the other map is going to have a filename of gmapsupp.img or maybe something like gmapsup1.img. You must have two img files (not counting the Basemap which is gmapbmap.img) for you to see two City Navigators.

-using Mapsource or Mapinstall to move a City Navigator to a nuvi 855 will put the map in the 855, but will not install Junction View files and will not install Voice Recognition files.

-If you delete unneeded Voices and other files (do you really need your nuvi to speak Afrikaans or Danish?), it's possible to install all of North America to an 855 using standard GarminMapUpdater or Garmin Express software so you won't have to choose a map installation of just a portion of North America.

-One last thought: If a SD card is used, you can have the full latest City Navigator map on the nuvi and replace the tiny Junction View file with the large JCV file as long as the large jcv is placed on the SD card. This really improves the quality of Junction Views displayed.

.JCV file

Craig & Boxcar:
Thanks.
Can I delete the small .jcv file or just rename it (..JCV.old, etc) and leave it on the Nuvi?. I really do use the junction file.

And am I correct that I put the large .jcv file in a 'Garmin' folder on the sd card?

I reinstalled the file using Mapupdater and it did a complete NA install.

Renaming it (*.old) is great and better than just deleting it, unless you copy and save the file to a computer before deleting it. Keep your options open to be able to recover a deleted or disabled file!

On the SD card, the large jcv file will go into the jcv subfolder of the garmin folder; i.e., /Garmin/JCV. On the SD card you may well need to manually create these folders. If the large jcv isn't in the proper SD card folder, it won't be seen by the nuvi.

PS--good work on the full all-NA map installation.

accomplished!

Done transferring the .jcv file and renaming the original. Now I just have to get on a highway that has 'junctions' and see if it works.

Off to Lake Placid tomorrow so I'll test it.

Many thanks. smile

You

You can also check any time by putting your Nuvi in Simulation mode, and then enter a destination and have the GPS simulate the route. It will display each Junction View between your set location and your inputted destination, without leaving your living room.

You could also just enter a destination with the Nuvi in normal routing mode, press the green bar on the top of the map screen and then on the "turns" screen, step through each entry listed. Any Junction View picture available in your route will appear on the screen.
