Confusing (RE: My 1490LMT)

After getting a message I had insufficient space to load the 2014.20 Maps, I called Garmin, and was told that 98% of ALL Garmins on the market, (all past models and most current ones) have insufficient memory and one must use a MicroSD card to hold the maps.
Garmin removed the option to load only USA maps onto their devices (rather than USA and Canada).
Tech support said ONLY the European models (like my nuvi 1490LMT, but sold in Europe) were shipped with enough internal memory (4Gb) to support current map updates, and that US models have only 2Gb internal memory.
Even after successfully downloading the update, I get a message saying "Unknown download problems," but when I do a check via Garmin Express, it says I am up-to-date, but I am then directed to download the entire 2014.20 mapset all over again!
It confuses me why Garmin would suddenly DOUBLE the size of their Mapsets, and cause virtually everyone to use SD cards to hold the maps, especially when MOST (Tech Support's words) Garmin GPS devices on the market right now cannot internally support the most current mapset.

Actually I'm feeling pretty smug with my 14** units. I paid $175 for a 1490T a few years ago. It had a poor USB port, a small JCV file and I had to delete all the voices, vehicles, help files, languages & keyboards when I purchased lifetime updates.
Garmin replaced my 1490LMT with a refurb, and then allowed me to use large JCV file and a full US & Canada with a $5.00 card. The newer maps have lane assists on surface streets & more roads with speed limits.
I bought a 1450LMT a year ago for $78.00.

I won't address the inaccurate statements made above but will suggest that bob uninstall Garmin Express and use GarminMapUpdater:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40555

It is true though, that a 2GB nuvi 1490 needs a SD card to install the full City Navigator North America NT map update.

It took multiple attempts with Garmin Express, but the new map update finally downloaded. Too many failed download errors though for my liking.

I've downloaded the latest

I've downloaded the latest Garmin map updater and checked for latest maps version. It tells me I'm up to date with 2014.20 installed on my device. Then when I check my 3590 it says I'm running 2013.10. So am I up to date or what?

No, you're not. Unless, you have the 2014.20 maps unchecked in your settings...

The .unl file is located in the .System\JCV folder. It was created on my 2595 when the 2014.10 maps were installed. Apparently not all units have an .unl file.

There never was an .unl file for the full JCV files available for download - D3060110A.JCV (2014.20) or D3060100A.JCV (2014.10)

The ONLY choices that Garmin Express offered me were:
1) USA and Canada (complete)
2) Canada and Border States
3) Eastern US
4) Western US

No choice to download only 48/49 States

The Tech Support guy was even surprised there was no option for all of USA only.

Maybe if I'd used Garmin Updater rather than Garmain Express?

Don't get me wrong-I am not unhappy w/ my 1490. It has worked fine (and is so much better IMO than the TomTom and Magellans I've had).

I just fail to see why they limited internal memory to 2Gb when the Euro version of the same model number was equipped with 4Gb.

Having to use a MicroSD just to store the latest Mapset just seems short sighted on their part.

I started to download the new map with web updater and the power went off in the neighborhood. Later I tried again and was told that I have the latest version already. I tried with GE and it seems to work but when I checked the gps there was a message Cannot unlock maps. When I look for mapinfo there is no map at all.
Any advise?

You can redownload your maps as many times as you wish within one year of first downloading a particular update.

First download Garmin's MapUpdater program from:

PC Version

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

MAC version

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg

Attach your Nuvi to your computer and run the downloaded program. If you get a screen that says your maps are up to date, choose the option to download them again. You may not get this screen. In either case you should come to a screen that says "Ready to Update Maps". At that point you can click to continue and the maps will be installed. Or you can click on the View Options button in the lower left corner and you'll see all the available map region and install options.

2014.20

schwert wrote:

But maybe I will give this one a try.

The new map is essential for anyone driving south from Page AZ (or north to Page/LakePowell) due to the US 89 closure north of Bitter Springs and the just-opened-yesterday US 89T detour between Page and Gap which is already part of 2014.20!

Got it

Did the download and I have noticed they have added a major new highway in my area. Not bad cosidering the highway was only opened 1 year ago.

GE loop

I have two 2460 units, Garmin Express (GE) saw a firmware update for both, 3.50, installed, rebooted the GPS's, checked the units to see the update took, it did, yet when reconnected to GE it tells me there is a firmware update, the same one I just loaded. For the heck of it I went through it a second time with one of the units, and GE still says there is (the same) updated firmware available.

GE made no mention of 2014.20 being available either, nor did "My Dashboard" on the Garmin website. Both units have 2014.10.

Downloading 2014.20 as I type this to my first unit via Garmin Map Updater 3.2.2

CN NA NT 2014.20 Not Available . .

. . for me, any way. Garmin Express, Map Updater they both state that my 2014.10 is the most current map available and that my pair of Garmin nuvis are both up-to-date.

Try

Try logging onto your myGarmin.com account with your Nuvi attached to the computer. Click on myMaps once your logged on and you should find your attached Nuvi listed. Click on Download Now to the right of the picture of your Nuvi.

Even though the map version may show as 2014.10 in the description to the right of the picture once you've clicked on Download Now, version 2014.20 should be installed.

I don't have Garmin Express installed on my computer so I'm not sure if Garmin Express will be loaded/run when you go at the download this way but in the past this approach has worked when the download software was showing the previous map version as being current.

When Garmin Express was first announced, I downloaded it and had nothing but grief with it. So I downloaded MapUpdater to my desktop and now I don't even fool with Garmin Express or MyGarmin, for that matter. When a new map is released, I just kick off MapUpdater at let it do its own thing. I've never had a negative experience with it.

By the way, with all of the issues with Garmin Express, why does anyone use it? Why not just stick with MapUpdater?

I agree that for map updates Garmin Express is a major PITA for a lot of us while MapUpdater makes the whole process pretty painless.

That being said, Garmin Express does offer a nice clean interface for software updates, an easy way to backup your important files on the Nuvi, and a good facility for transferring favorites etc. from one Nuvi to another. In other words GE has it's place and would be a pretty good all round tool if they could just get the map update problems corrected.

There is an new issue with Garmin Express that just appeared a day or so ago. They have a new version available (v2.3.7.0) and now they have changed the interface. Not all bad but you'd think they would fix the issues before they attempted to make it look different. mad

Edit to add... thought GE was utter digestive byproduct on my MacBook Pro... tried to get it to work on a WindowsXP pc that I still occasionally use - and it's worse on that than it is on the Mac.
