I do not want the ghost of Garmin Express in my Notification

Lets end this. If you haven't gotten rid of it yet.
Be careful of what i'm going to suggest to you. Take your time. Hit start and type services.msc in the search bar. It will show up top. Click on it. Make it full screen. Look for "Garmin Core Update Service" right click it and open up its properties. Near the bottom it will say "Service status". If not already, stop this service. Now look above that and you will see "Startup type:" open that up, and on the right go ahead and disable it. Click ok and get out of there. Use the link below to see what it is supossed to look like when your done. I use express but i don't want it running unless i need it, then i go in and start it up.

I got rid of Garmin Core Update Service a long time ago. Everything 'Garmin Express' is uninstalled, gone, removed, deleted...poof. Yet I still have the [Garmin Express] icon and the [ExpressTray.exe] name showing in my taskbar Notification area. You see - when certain programs are uninstalled Microsoft does not automatically delete what was in the taskbar Notification area. The problem of the ghost program is not necessarily the fault of Garmin because other non-Garmin programs that are uninstalled could likely leave a ghost behind as well.

Again, all things Garmin Express are long gone, except for the ghost name and icon in my taskbar's Notification area. I'm guessing that you likely have some old program ghosts in your Notification area too.

I'll just have to live with having an uninstalled, non-working, Garmin Express program and icon in my taskbar's Notification area.

Have you tried any of these:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/remove-icon...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-how-icons...

In Windows 7, my Control Panel offers me the Notification Area Icons where I can Hide notifications and icons for each icon.

Craig,

Yes, I'm familiar with all the MS tips - no luck.

You are correct in that I can hide the [old uninstalled program's] icon and notification from appearing on the taskbar. That's not the problem - I want to get rid of it (Garmin ExpressTray icon and name) inside my Notification area....since the program has been uninstalled from my computer and no longer exists. In other words, I do not want the ghost of Garmin Express in my Notification area (hidden or not) since the program has been removed from my computer and it no longer exists.

The ghost of Garmin Express remains in my Notification area. I can hide the icon and notification (wouldn't notify me anyway because the GE program does not exist anymore on my computer), but I want the icon and name gone from Notification.

I cannot find GE anywhere in my PC's programs files, registries, etc. and nothing I have tried removes the GE icon and its name from the Notification area (not the taskbar but the Notification box). GE doesn't work of course because it has been uninstalled, but it is shown in Notification as-if the program is a viable installed program...when it is not.

Install went without a hitch

I have a Nuvi 1450 w/ an SD card and lifetime maps. Before I did anything, I used Control Panel to unhide all the hidden folders and backed up the entire unit and SD card to my computer.
Last night I installed 2014.10 and the installation went as expected. I first decided to use the myGarmin method to see if anything had changed there, but as soon as it said that the installation was good to go using Garmin Express, I quit that attempt. I wanted no part of GE.
I kicked off MapUpdater, which told me that since I have an SD card the entire North America map would be installed. I concurred, and away it went. A little over three hours later it finished without a hitch. The map was on the SD card and the SMALL JCV was in the unit. I had downloaded the large JCV earlier, and it took me about another fifteen minutes to copy it to the JCV file in the unit.
This morning I'll test everything on the way to work just to make sure everything works, especially Junction View. If anything untoward occurs, I'll report back.

Installed 2014.10 with no issues

I installed Garmin Express and downloaded the map with no issues. Approx. 90 minutes from start to finish. Removed Garmin Express afterwards; it's just too much of a resource hog to leave on the PC for the small benefit of lurking out there to let you know when something new comes along. I see it only as a benefit if you have a slow connection like DSL and it gradually downloads it in the background for you over a couple of days and notifies when ready.

I didn't know the 2014 update come so soon. Will update later when the rush is over.

FunkyBoss, I have the Garmin 2597 and have used GE with success also. If you want a copy of your map on your computer just hook back your Nuvi and hit advanced. It will take you to a screen to enable you to install to the computer. It only takes a few minutes to do a full installation to your computer. I can't figure out what's going with everyone and GE.

Garmin map updater does the job again

New map installed to pc (Windows 8) and nuvi using Map Updater v3.1.14. No muss, no fuss. Nothing to uninstall except the old map from the pc (I always keep latest 2 copies).

I think you're right, muell9k, and the option to install to computer is only offered in certain situations.

The way to always update the map on the GPS device and computer is to use GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express, then after clicking the Install Options button, be sure to switch from the default "Install to Device" to "Install to Device and Computer." This will result in a nuvi update and a computer update for use in either Mapsource or Basecamp (or both).

This is why ...

This is why I prefer GarminMapUpdater. It not only provides the option of where to install the update but also the ability to adjust the size/coverage of the map we want to download.

I believe in GE you are referring to the reinstall option and not the advanced. This unfortunately only reinstalls the full download without options to only download more focused segments.

With an update of this size, I will be reducing the map download size from All North America to something smaller according to my need.

Keeps more room in my GPS for more POI's etc.

Although Basecamp reads the map off the connected device, I often use it without the GPS (its usually still in the car).... so a PC version of the map is more than useful.

Speed,

Thanks.

The 'TrayCleaner' program (by LeeLu) that you provided a link to (your 2nd link above) has known viruses, and also adds toolbars, weird search engines, etc., etc. that will be added to a computer when the program is downloaded. And 'TrayCleaner' does not necessarily remove old items from the Notification [tray] area. There are LOTS of complaints from people that have downloaded TrayCleaner and tried to use it...

I had done (past tense) the Registry Method once before very recently in an attempt to get rid of Garmin Express in my Notification area. As I look back on it now (if the truth were known), I suspect it was successful in removing GE from my Notification area, but I did not know it. Let me explain. I believe this is what happened a few days ago to cause me to think the Registry Method of removal was not successful. - I did the Registry Method 'prior to' successfully removing all the other Garmin Express files I found that remained on my computer, therefore I elected to re-install GE so I could try once again to uninstall it. When I re-installed GE [of course] I re-added Garmin Express to my Notification area. Thus, I (believe I) failed to check and see (and learn) that the Registry Method had been successful in removing GE from my Notification area.

Moving forward to this present and current time - knowing I have now successfully uninstalled the GarminExpress.exe program as well as all the other GE related program files, etc. (except for the ghost GE icon and name in Notification area) I just now did the Registry Method again (my 2nd attempt) and I am pleased to report that Garmin Express is now gone from my Notification area!

Looking back on events, I feel pretty sure that I [had] removed GE from the Notification area the first time I used the Registry Method, but having [had] found some remnants of GE on my computer (program x86 files) I re-installed GE (which re-added GE back into Notifications) and I just [incorrectly] thought the Registry Method had failed to remove it the first time I used the method...the same as the TrayCleaner program had failed to remove it.

I appreciate your help. Now Garmin Express is gone and out of my life. Thanks!

4 Gigs of Junk Files?

No problem with download using Express about an hour.

Question: After a successful update do I still need all the files remaining in the Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Garmin/Core Update Service/MAP-NA-2014-10/?

I'm currently sitting with 5.15 GB of data with two very large directories. In the sub-directory of IMG/ are two sub directories both slightly under 2GB each.

IMG/City Navigator North America NT 2014.10.gmap/Product 1/ is 1.75 GB with 283 small gmap files.

The other directory of 006-D2338/ has an image file GMAPPROM.IMG is 1.86 GB.

One could be left over from the "building" process GE goes through after the download. I don't see a "clean-up" option with GE after transferring the map to the unit. I'm still using XP. I suppose if I did an uninstall and a re-install that would clean it up or would it?

This may have been answered previously but could not find it doing a search.

Although many of the old school say that MSCONFIG is the way to go, I prefer Autoruns because it give me lots of information about what is running on my machine (and the ability to stop things running for now but later let them run).

It is amazing what gets into startup over time - AND STAYS THERE. The example I use is ITunes. Every now and then I use it for audio work but there are long stretches when I do not need it. I can disable the "helpers" and the "updaters" until I need them again.

Hey guys, good news! The latest GE update 2.2.13 provide the "complete" screen for the Device/Advanced tab. I can now download the map to my laptop. Hopefully, future updates will also include the option to download map segments also.

One other concern arises though, some here already had the "download to PC" function prior to the GE update ... This means that not all "versions" of the same version are identical... Probably the source of much of the confusion when we talk about GE here.

Thanks to POI Factory and members that try to help us thru this stuff ... maybe Garmin keeps track of some of these threads to help generate some of their changes/updates.
