Lifetime Maps

Nuvi 2460LMT 2 Units

Update

I used the clone method to update my Nuvi 1790. I have the US and Canada on the unit. This only leaves 5MB left on the unit. I will probably have to use the SD card to load maps on the next update. I received two JCV files with the map download, the small version and the large. No other download was necessary to get the large file.

thanks for the update

Now I need to get the unit out of the car and find the usb cable. Downside is waiting the hour for the data to download and then upload to the Garmin. Oh well its the price of progress

--
260, 295W, 1490T,2455LMT

Done

Total download and install time was only about 2 hours and only went for the lower 49 states - no plans on traveling outside the USA anyway.

Did notice several additions - a ton of unpaved roads added to the maps.

Joke

I also hope its not a Joke BUT I did Download, from the Garmin Express and I Simulated a Run and my Custom POI's were NOT on the Screen. What can that mean?

Power Outage

Simply Charge your Device before attempting to Download. The Full Process is just a bit over one Hour and be extra sure that your Computer's batteries are also Charged. (If you have a laptop)

Really Bad News Flash

After loading 2014.10 you MUST Re-run your Customized POI's, since they are Linked and Tied into the most current Map. Its not too Bad, IF you let the POI Loader run the POI Files Automatically (not good) but is bad if you need to run each File Separatly. (Manual)

--

You have to pretend you are

You have to pretend you are d/l the old version and then you will see the new version. I am d/l it right now.

User-loaded Custom POI's should not be affected by a map update. I've never had to do this in the past and didn't have to do it after the 2014.10 map update. question

Successful on my 2495 with MapUpdater

I ran the map updater and it said I could purchase maps from Garmin's site. I have lifetime maps on this unit.

Yes, I noted that earlier but in my case it was a "redownload". So it's happening on orginal downloads as well. I just checked this morning and it's still showing as "purchase maps" for a device with a lifetime map subscription.

Sure hope this doesn't end up being Garmin's attempt to force us into using Garmin Express when MapUpdater is really the only facility that works 100% of the time. Although there is a workaround by getting the product key from your myGarmin.com account. Then you can get past the "purchase" screen and download the update.

Downloaded and install the 2014.10 map last night to my 2495. The whole process took about 90 minutes without a hitch using MapUpdater. Still have ~2GB free of the 8GB on the 2495.

I did not see the "purchase" offer either.

I did have the "Cannot connect to server" error when I first tried the update at ~8:00pm California time. It cleared up when I tried again ~9:00pm.

Hurray!

Do you (or anyone) know how to uninstall Garmin Express from a PC using Windows 7? I am unable to uninstall GE - it fails to uninstall, stopping midway through at 'Uninstalling GarminCoreService'.

I had no problem with the normal uninstall feature of Windows letting me uninstall Garmin Express with Windows 7 PCs.

One thing you may try is to download and reinstall Garmin Express, then followup with an uninstall of it.

Failing that, my next thought would be to try using something like Revo Uninstaller and see if that works better than the standard uninstaller.

I believe Garmin Express is always running in the background (or has processes running that need to be stopped). You likely need to stop the "GarminCoreService" process before it can be removed. This is for WinXP (my Win7 PC is elsewhere at the moment) but it should be similar/the same for Win7:

Get to Windows Task Manager (press & hold Ctrl-Alt, press Delete), select the Processes tab, find "GarminCoreService" and click on it, press the End Process button at the bottom-right.

Now try the standard Windows Uninstall again for Garmin Express. Note that more processes may be used that I'm unaware of. If others give the same error, stop those additional processes in the same way.

Install Full North American Map

I used to install one of these partial maps because the internal storage would not hold the full map, but I got an SD Card now with plenty of space. But both Garmin Express and Map Updater are still trying to get me to install the partial map.

How do I get the full map again (on the SD Card)

EDIT: I remember Garmin Lifetime updater had a bug that did the opposite. But it will not work anymore (just tried to install it).

See your other post

Thanks for the suggestions to uninstall the worthless and terribly designed Garmin Express.

I tried to uninstall Garmin Express by:
(1)Trying the typical uninstall method of using Programs & Features Uninstall (FAIL)
(2)Trying to downloading Garmin Express [again] and uninstalling (FAIL)
(3)Using Task Manager to Stop/End any Garmin Express Processes and/or Services & then trying to uninstall (Fail)
(4)Downloaded Revo Uninstaller Pro and selected any/all Garmin Express related items in PC to be uninstalled. (SUCCESS!!!)

I am extremely glad that I no longer have this Garmin Express program on my computer. I have NO intentions of EVER downloading Garmin Express again. Not only is Garmin Express a piece of s*^! that cannot be counted on to always work, but Garmin has failed to fix it so customers are confident that it will always work. And Garmin has failed to design Garmin Express for it to be easily uninstalled/removed from ones PC. Garmin's Garmin Express is pure junk...and whoever designed the piece of crap should be totally embarrassed, and fired for being a stupid idiot.

So, I am glad that I was able to download 2014.10 using the old [quality] standby method of using MapUpdater, which has never failed me and has always worked faithfully, easily, and like a charm. That said, it's nice for me to know that I have the latest-and-greatest Garmin map update that is probably 2-6 years behind being current and up-to-date...

Download went OK

Downloaded maps last evening. Took about 45 minutes using Express. I tried using Lifetime Map Updater, but it didn't recognize new maps. Express downloaded to Garmin 3490, then Garmin uploaded to BaseCamp. All went well, no complaints. Whew!

I have Lifetime Maps for my Garmin device and used the Garmin MapUpdater without a problem. I guess the MapUpdater recognizes that my device serial number was supposed to get maps free for its lifetime.

Craig - I still cannot get rid of Garmin 'ExpressTray.exe' in my 'Notifications' in the taskbar. You know what I've done thus far to get rid of everything else associated with GE. I opened My Computer and looked in the Garmin folder and also my two Program Files and in Program Files (x86) I deleted 'ExpressTray', but I still have ExpressTray.exe in my taskbar 'Notifications'. You

You proably can't delete Expresstray in the Notification area because it's a "process" that's running when you boot the computer.

Go to the Task Manager in Windows and you should find an entry called Express Tray in there. Right click on the entry and select DISABLE.

Yes, I have already stopped ExpressTray in the Task Manager. But I would love to get rid of it. I cannot figure out where it is so I can delete, remove or uninstall it. I would have thought that Revo Uninstaller Pro would found this and allowed me to get rid of it...but it didn't.

On the other hand what does any of this have to do with the subject of this thread which is the 2014.10 map update? Since we already have probably a half dozen threads dealing with Garmin Express why are we dealing with it here?

It's probably not the best place to discuss Garmin Express, but Garmin Express is a [map update] feature that many people try to use in order to update their Garmin device with the latest map update. And Garmin Express has definitely caused many people a lot of problems. So, it isn't like getting rid of Garmin Express is totally unrelated and not directed tied into this map update in my opinion.

Maybe others would like hearing from others that say - "I downloaded it", or "I think I'll wait a week", or "I selected lower 49 states so I wouldn't have to use a memory card", or...or. But that's okay too...

Thanks...but. I unchecked Garmin ExpressTray in Startup (via MSCONFIG) and restarted the computer. (In Startup it now shows it is disabled with the date and time I disabled it.) While I'm very sure that ExpressTray.exe has now been totally disabled the ExpressTray.exe icon is still showing in my 'Notification' area in the taskbar of my PC as well as [being disabled] in my Startup.

How about trying something like Wise Registry Cleaner in case there are still GE-related things in the registry.

http://www.wisecleaner.com/wiseregistrycleanerfree.html

Can you find ExpressTray.exe in your hard drive? I wonder what would happen if you renamed it ExpressTray.ex_ or something, then reboot. If this stops your taskbar notification issue and has no other ill effects, you could delete the file in a week or two.

Yes, it's been posted several times now

Yes, it can be found straight from Garmin just like last time. A quick search of recent map update threads here should find its link for you.

Craig - I cannot find ExpressTray.exe anywhere on my computer (except in my 'Notifications' area where I see the icon and its name) since I removed/uninstalled [all things] named 'Garmin Express' using Revo Uninstaller. Obviously ExpressTray is still in a registry of my computer somewhere.

I never have liked using any type of registry cleaner since the time I used a cleaner many, many years ago and the registry cleaner arbitrarily removed a multitude of registries that were absolutely needed. Never again for me...

All went well. The download

All went well. The download and install took about 30-40 minutes per GPS. No "not enough space" issues. I've navigated with the new maps and I don't notice any obvious updates.
I did test to see if a missing street appeared on this update and the answer is NO. The street was built 3 years ago and it still does not show up on NAVTEQ
