SD card amd large JCV file

alandb wrote:

the update of my 755T to CN NA 2013.20. I updated with full NA to both computer and nuvi (directly to SD card). It took a total of 43 minutes. I got the large JCV file (774,978 KB) which is about 55 KB smaller than the JCV that came with 2013.10. The new JCV file is named D3060070A.JCV.

Quick question: I have an SD card in my Nuvi 1450. When I install 2013.20, will the downloader automatically use it, or is there something I need to do?
When I installed 2013.10, I didn't have the SD card yet. I added it later, then manually copied the large JCV to it. Everything worked well. Now that the SD card is already in my 1450, will the installation procedure automatically put the large JCV file there?

You're given a choice early on in the process to use a SD card or internal memory for the map. It's possible that the choice is only offered if the installer sees that you're short on internal nuvi space to install all of North America.

No, the installation of a new map will put the jcv file in the normal location--and it'll be the default jcv file for your nuvi model. If you had to manually download and copy the large jcv file to your nuvi or SD card in the past, you'll need to do it again with each update.

.

Thanks for the news - I am on the closing part of an 18 day international trip and will update when I return - hopefully my submittals to Navteq will be in it - now going on over a year.

Update: Nope! Still not there. Oh well there's always 2013.3 for hope.

Don't want to alarm you but hopefully you have a back up of your 660 as those gobbledy gook dates are often a sign of a corrupted file system on the Nuvi.

Darn, just saw on an earlier post that your having a hard time doing an update. Hopefully the old girl will continue to get you from point A to Point B without any problems.

Tonight I learned to use Finder -> View -> Show System Files to find the .JCV file. I did a simulation in the Denver area, and finally saw a Junction view or two.

Look at the thread regarding the Large JCV file available.

The large (roughly 750MB) file offers many more JVs (essentially every interstate hwy exit and interchange) and they're photorealistic. It's worth the effort of a manual download and installation to replace the stock jcv file offered to your nuvi 1450.

Correct

Correct. Even with many unneeded voice and other file removed on my 750, my 2013.20 map update had to be installed to a SD card to obtain all of North America.

Wrong preview on Garmin site

The Garmin site now shows the updated 2013.20 version for North America; however, when I click on the link to see the preview of the detail maps, it pulls up the updated Europe version instead!

I'm trying to see if they finally have the full Intercounty Connector (MD 200), which opened last Thanksgiving, as well as the Father Hurley Blvd (Germantown, MD) railroad bridge and extension to Germantown Rd, which opened *last* August.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Looks like I need to clean some space up to install this map.

Map Update

Every time I try to use Garmin Lifetime Updater with my Nuvi 350 it stops loading with 1% left. Frustrating to say the least. I have lifetime updates on the 350.

Yes, I compared the new 2013.20 to the previous 2013.10 map and to me (on the opposite end of the USA who has never been in MD, mind you), it appears to me that I see major changes in these areas: Father Hurley Blvd and Intercounty Connector look complete to me on the new map.

Even if I'm wrong and the full updates aren't made, there are MAJOR additions to both of your desired roads now in the new map. I expect you will be a very Happy Camper with 2013.20 and will finally get better quality routing in these areas.

Map update

the update went smooth and i hope for bug free release cool

Problem?

I had a problem with the download via lifetime updates today. It took over 9 hours to download on my system and GPS and then I got an error message during the install procedure. It said to try to install it again and it failed several times. Did a reboot of my system (disconnecting the GPS first) and tried again (after plugging it back in) and it said it failed. When I disconnected the nuvi again and checked the maps the new version was there, but it was not on my system which is probably why it was reporting a failure. Finally I just did another shutdown with the GPS attached. This time I got blank screen on my GPS (but it was recognized in explorer)and tried the installation again and it said it completed. (Side note:got a security warning that to allow it to make changes to my computer this time) In the Program Data/Garmin/Maps folder (which was empty before) I now have a folder called "City Navigator North America NT 2013.20.gmap". Is that everything that is supposed to be there.

This is the first time I have downloaded the maps to my computer so I am not sure whether I have what I need to use Mapsource/Basecamp. Still so much for me to learn, and would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Thanks

I have folders as you describe for each of the map updates that were delivered to my computer and nuvi.

Start you computer's Mapsource or BaseCamp program now and most likely, you'll see 2013.20 as a map to be used by the program (and with the map select dropdown menu, all past maps available to Mapsource or BaseCamp on the computer).

Thanks

Thanks Craig......it is there and working and now all I have to do is to start working on learning how to use the programs. Don't know why I had the problems, but it seems to have worked out anyway. I really got a little freaky when I saw a blank screen on my nuvi when it was attached to my computer.

But.....I did have a backup!!!!

That's great. As you add future maps to your computer and GPS, I suggest keeping the older maps (until hard drive space becomes an issue). That way with a new map, you can zoom in to an area of interest to you, then switch between current and past maps to see what map updates (streets and built in POIs) occur with each map update.

That's how I was able to answer dconsolla's question a few posts back in this thread.

Option change

Anyone else notice "option 1" (Lifetime Updater) is no longer offered from MyGarmin->MyMaps->Update maps? Just mapupdater the old Option 2.

Something about "if it aint broke, don't fix it ...

Like many on this forum I too find the release of a new Nuvi map update somewhat of a quandary ... something of the old adage: "if it ain't broke then don't mess with it."

What I really would like to see is an operating system update on the Oregon 450 series, an an added 'tracback' feature on the eTrex 30 exclaim

Thanks for the news!

But beware and alert because when the unit finishes installing the map, there's a question asking and recommending to install the lifetime updater.

2013.20 DL'ed from Garmin to PC, then Garmin to GPS...I think!

Don, I have the same folder ("City Navigator North America NT 2013.20.gmap") you do, which I am somewhat surprised to learn. Why am I surprised to learn that I have this file? Because my Lifetime Updater is setup to only download maps to a device (e.g. my GPS unit) and not to my computer system.

Yesterday when I downloaded NA NT 2013.20 I first clicked to find out if my Lifetime Updater said there was a new map. Sure enough - there was a new map. So, I clicked to download the new map thinking the Updater would probably tell me to hook up my GPS so it could be downloaded directly to my [GPS] device. Remember, my Updater is purposely not setup to download the map to my computer system... Anyway, the Updater never told me to hook up my device (GPS), but clearly downloaded the new map to my computer system anyway. Then, I had to hook up my GPS device and load the new map into the GPS device. I really didn't (and don't) want the new map on my computer - I only want the new map on my GPS device. Strange that the Updater did not follow the setup and downloaded to my computer system anyway. In essence I had to download the new map twice - once from Garmin to my computer, and then from Garmin to my GPS device. Next time I will hook up my GPS when I learn there is a new map before clicking to download the new map. But where will the new map be downloaded to? My GPS? My computer? Both? Dunno...

nuvi 780

thanks for the update, works perfectly on my GPS

Got Me???

koot,

I think someone with more experience will have to answer this. I had my nuvi attached when I tried to update and it loaded on it without a problem. My problem was getting it to load onto my computer. When I was trying to do the update it id'd my nuvi as beeing present and then spent multiple hours (more than 9) with my slow connction to download the file. After that it was an installation issue and I did not have to download the file again. It kept apparently kept the file in memory someplace even though I rebooted my system. After the reboot it infomed me that a map was ready for me to install even though it already installed it on my nuvi,( but not on my computer). Then it kept on trying unsuccessfully to install it on my system. Don't know what I did to make it work but just kept hacking at it until it worked so I didn't have to get the Garmin Customer support go around.

Don, I have my Installation

Don, I have my Installation Preferences set to 'Install to Device Only', but the map still downloaded to my computer when I clicked to "Install' the map and did not have my GPS hooked up to the computer with a USB cable.

I'm assuming you have your Installation Preferences set to 'Install to Device and Computer', correct?

Deletion suggestions

Have a nuvi 750, needs space for the update. Scared to go in and delete system files on my own, can I safely delete the entire "Audible" directory?

I had a 350 a few years ago and I found that I needed to remove all files except English in the Help and Languages. I also removed all MP3 files and all Jpegs and audio books. You can also delete the trial Translator.

BUT i would also suggest that you make a complete backup of the GPS first. Your Windows Explorer also needs to st up so all hidden files and folders are visible for backing up!

My 750

vdex34 wrote:

Welcome to The Factory!

On my 750, I deleted most of the voice files, and all other foreign language files (Help, Text, etc.)

This worked fine for me letting me install the new map update to the nuvi with full North America coverage up through 2013.10.

Well, it finally became space-limited with the new 2013.20 map update. My options were to install only a portion of North America or to store the full map update to an SD card.

I chose the SD card option. I suggest that you install a SD card as well (maybe a 4GB) and select the "Install map to SD card" option during the update process.

But to answer your question, first make a full backup of your current nuvi files to a hard drive or recordable DVD, then delete unneeded voice, vehicles and the contents of the Audible directory on the nuvi. But even if this lets you install all of North America with the current 2013.20 map update, it's only a matter of time before you will need to switch to storing the map file on a SD card. I suggest going SD now.

Yup!

Garmin Communicator is the WORST SOFTWARE IN THE WORLD!

I cannot upgrade my maps at the moment because my computer will not accept the stupid communciator upgrade, apparently because the virus protection is blocking it. Why should I have to turn off virus protection to upgrade maps I already paid for? It seems like every time I upgrade maps I run into these STUPID problems. Lifetime upgrade does not work for me. So I try to do things the old way and the STUPID Garmin software requires me to disable all protection, apparently, to install some stupid upgrade just to download software to my GPS. Why does Garmin think they have the right to mess with my computer every single time? What a stupid company.
