I have tried all the English speaking voices and have settled on Jack. I started with Jill but now find that Jack is less grating to my ear. I hope I don't come across as sexist.
I am using American Jill. I tried all of the English voices but could not get use to hearing how the British and Australian voices say the exits and highway numbers using hundreds. For example: exit at four hundred fourteen instead of how the American voices would say: exit at four fourteen.
I use Australian Karen Voice. It is more clear even on full volume. Jill is good but it works best on volume upto 80. But while driving with my wife, her volume stays higher than Karen !!!!
lol
I change them up, but usually use Australian Karen. I used to like British Emily, but my wife said she sounded like that crazy English woman that was on Dexter.
All the girls are great. You can yell at them and they don't argue. It is a harmless way to vent and avoid road rage, just remember to keep the windows up.
With it you can adjust the volume of TTS voices but the program's main trick is allowing you to modify individual phrases. You can change any 'stock' phrase to anything you'd like. Many users start by changing "recalculating" to something less harsh. Mine says "Thinking, Thinking, Ah Ha, lets try this!"
I use jack for directions, as I have not had very good experiences with females providing directions or reading maps for that matter and I use Karen from the att site for my POIs because it is usually the females that are the most needy when traveling.
Having tried all the english TTS voices, I find that the male voices are better at pronounciation than the female voices are, BUT I can't stand listening to a dude giving me directions all day, so I'm sticking with British Serena on my 255w. Sure she'll pronounce boulevard as 'bou-le-verrrrrd' which always annoys me slightly, but I like her sexy voice and accent the most.
I've given up on TTS. When the wife is with me on the bike it's American English and when I'm solo it's Dr. Nightmare! He's a riot but makes the wife's skin crawl.
I have noticed that same tone from Jill when she says "recalculating". I have only had my Nuvi about a month, so I haven't tried changing voices yet.
I wonder - Do the phrases stated by the other voices always sound clear, and where your mind can quickly comprehend what was said (instead of still thinking of how cool the accent sounds!)? I am thinking of the Aussie voices that several people have mentioned.
She was the candidate for French presidency, and was so famous for saying stupid things and inventing new words... I'm sure French members would appreciate the pun !
Bottom line, I also MUTED the darn machine. Just like we did by not electing her.
Still, just for the heck of it, I'd love some voices from "The Nanny named Fran". I can imagine Niles warning me about a radar, or one of Frannie's famous "Oh Mister Sheffield..."
Darn, sometimes I hate traveling down memory lane. But not today, I wonder why

I tried all the available TTS voices for my Nuvi 255 but found them to be so low-quality that they are totally useless to me. My hearing is not what it used to be and i find that i cannot understand many of the words in ALL! the TTS voices. Yes, i give up speaking street names feature, but i just cannot tolerate a voice that i cannot understand.
I know now that when it comes time to buy another Gps, I will have to test the GPS for voices before i buy it.

UK....all the way.
I use 'Kate' from UK. I have tried the American voices, both male and female and prefer the pronunciation of the UK female.

You can change
You can change "recalculating" to what ever you want use this:

I prefer Aussie Karen, kids love Dr. Nightmare though.
I have started playing with the Garmin voice creation software and importing/converting audio clips to create a multi-voice file.
That way the voice would feel unique and you never know who would decide to give you directions
Cheers!

Use Voice Editor
On my Nuvi 660, the TTS voices are too quiet to hear, even with the volume all the way up. The non-TTS voice is fine. Is this just my unit?

I like the aussy dude. The british guy uses words like 'slipway' when he means 'exit' so he confuses me.
what I really like is when they get it wrong (not next right, but second right...) I can say, "obviously he's not from around here..."
and the pronounciation is fun to get used to: Lemont for instance is pronounced around here as Le Mont whereas the aussy guy says Lemon-t (lament)
