SOX - What is it? How to use?

Okay, so I'm new here. I have downloaded a few POI files for my nuvi 205w and installed them without much hassle. I ask about SOX because I am unsure if I need to know about it and if I do need to know about it, then what exactly do I need to know. smile Sorry if this is found in a faq or something. I did look for it, but had no luck finding the info. Point it out to me if it is there please. Oh, and if someone could tell me one more thing (I haven't tried to fix this on my own yet), how do you remove only one set of Custom POIs from the gps. I saw an option to remove them all. I accidentally installed two similar sets and need to remove one. One more small thing too. Can I customize the names of the "folders" on the gps? For example, I downloaded all US Subway restaurants and they show up under Custom POIs as "subwayok". I am pretty picky about this stuff, sp I would like it to say "Subway". Thanks for any help.

sox

You need sox.exe when using .wav files on your garmin nuvi coming from a PC. Apparently, Mac users don't need it for POI Loader to install the audio to a nuvi. For older nuvis that are capable of playing mp3 audio, sox.exe is not needed for mp3 audio installed via POI Loader. Be sure to use the right version of sox.exe--newer ones do not work with POI Loader. The correct version and instructions can be found at:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

Create poi subdirectories on computer

For example....c:/Mypois/subway ..... c:/mypois/fuel...and so on

Put respective pois in appropriate subdirectories on your computer.

POI loader will load in named directories on your gps.

Sox is only needed if you have a non-mp3 gps .... to load wav files.

One tip.... use the search function ... both subjects have been discussed at
length mny times.

I don't think that will work

As I recall we tried the newer versions and it always failed that is why we still referance and tell people to use the old version 14.0.1

Use old SOX.EXE v14.0.1

Started new post for testing new sox.exe v14.4.0

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/35902

It failed the test.

Sox.exe

The newer version of the sox.exe needs specific DLL files installed in the correct directories, if I remember correctly, else it won't work.

I think the instructions are at the site that created the sox.exe.

I wrote in the subject header "For those interested" because I knew from a previous thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33887 that some members enjoyed experimenting. I just wanted to give a heads up to those who wanted to try and test this new version.

Personally I never upgrade to fix or improve what's not broken or working well for me.

Format Options are Different

In the previous post Canuk points to the thread where extensive testing showed the Format Options used with all versions of sox.exe after v14.0.1 are different and NOT compatible with PoiLoader.

I don't think anyone answered this Q yet. Every time you re-run POI loader it loads all the POI files from the selected directory on your PC onto your Garmin. So delete the unwanted POIs on your computer (or move them to a different directory) and re-run POI loader.

The latest POI Loader will let you specifically name the file created by each run of POI Loader (earlier versions always created a file called poi.gpi)

So, you could have a folder for every custom POI file (if you wanted). Or, you could have just one master folder that contained every custom POI file you have (perhaps with them grouped into categories).

If you had each POI file in its own folder, then you can delete just that .gpi file from your GPS.

Short Answer is

You can not actually remove a single POI file off the GPS if they were originally compiled into a single ~~~~.GPI file. You can remove it from the source folder on your PC and re-compile the ~~~~.GPI file. When you re-compile, I believe POILoader gives you the option to remove all existing GPI files from the GPS before installing the new one.

Let us know if any of these suggestions work for you.
