NA 2012.30 is available

I haven't downloaded it yet, but the lifetime updater says it is available. The download started but I aborted it because I prefer to use the older method of downloading since the new lifetime updater hangs at .05% when installing the computer files.

UPDATE: I am doing an install to the computer only right now, will probably update my 1450LMT later (or not, depending on the size of the JCV file).

None for my 765t...

Maybe it's best not to go first anyway.

A favor to ask

The update will definitely be available to everyone sometime today, if not tomorrow for sure. Here's a sneak peek of the update: http://www8.garmin.com/cgi-bin/mapgen/webmap.cgip=164364289&...

But I have a favor to ask. Could someone with a 765t, 755t, or an 865t download the update and tell me if the size of the junction view file. Remember, you can always revert back to 2012.20 and re-download the large junction view file if you want. Thanks in advance. I would do it myself, but I have no time today.

I tried the latest Lifetime Updater. It pops up a message saying an update is available, but when I go to download it, there is no update.

2012.30 shows as available under MyMaps on the Garmin website. Will try the install with the Garmin Map Update 2.7.12 instead of the Lifetime updater.

Oh my, what wonderful news. Have you downloaded it yet? I'm curious as to its size.

And if you've updated your 8x5 to the new map today, what is the stock jcv file size for folks who don't go this route to get the larger update?

I certainly hope that this (or another larger-than-default jcv download) will be made available to users of other older JV-enabled non-8x5 units.

If this works as I think it will, put me in the Happy-Camper-with-Garmin club wink

[Update]
Now this is interesting. The file name above is identical to the large jcv file that rame1012 obtained from Garmin for the previous map. So either Garmin has made the jcv file from a past map update compatible with newer maps or they have named this new file the same as an older non-identical file. I guess I'll have to download it and compare file sizes, etc. between the. Gosh, I may also have to see if Windows7 has the old DOS comp command.

NIce! Garmin got it right this time around

Interesting

I'm new to this as we have just had BB a few months now. Have updator set to start after 1130PM to stay in the Hughes DL window. As yet it has not notified me of a DL being availible. I think I'll see if it does everything auto and DLs it to my PC at night.

JCV File

I called in and asked, they have a standard e-mail already prepared with the info.

This does work with my 1390.

755T

I just updated my 755T with 2012.30. I used the map installer (not lifetime updater) and got the large JCV (775464 KB) as part of the map install. I did not have to download the JCV separately. My 755T does have plenty of free space (1 GB with the large JCV installed in internal memory). I will try my 855 next.

I just finished the 2012.30 map install on my 855. It did install a small JCV (45,405 KB) even though there is sufficient room for the large JCV file with about 265MB to spare. So I am now in the process of replacing the small JCV with the large one.

JCV file for the 765t

The JCV file for the 765t seems to be a little more updated than the one for the 865t. It's 757 mb as opposed to 752 mb and has a different file name. A minor difference though. I received automatically from downloading the update through my Garmin. (not the new updater progam).

Can you compare files?

alandb, the file names of the old and the new large jcv file are identical. Can you see if it's possible that the old file is the same file contents-wise? If so, then Garmin has made it possible that a jcv file from the previous map is useable with this new map--and this is news (and good news).

Also, if the files are the same, those of us who have the large "rame1012" file from the past update won't need to re-download it today, assuming we've kept a copy of large one and not had it overwritten with today's map update.

Another question to all: With the previous 2012.20 map, I had the large rame1012 file loaded onto a SD card and used it from there. For the 2012.30 map update I'm doing now, I removed the card before starting the update. What did you folks do? Did anyone do today's update keeping the old large jcv file on SD--and if so, is all OK?

3490 JCV size

I feel like I am missing something. The JCV size on my 3490 and 3790 is 449MB. Anyone have any idea why the new Nuvi's would have a smaller junction view file then the posted 757MB file?

Just a guess

This is just a guess and I'll stand corrected if someone knows better.

The 3490 uses a split-screen JV, doesn't it? If so, the images probably use less KB for the fewer pixels than do those nuvis who show a full-screen JV display. If so, you may have essentially the JVs of the larger file size jcv file but in a smaller file size due to the split-screen display.

Yes, both are split screen

Yes, both are split screen JVs. Your guess makes a lot of sense.

Different names and sizes.

CraigW, the 2012.20 JCV file I downloaded back in August from rame1012's link is D3060030A.jcv 789,003,131 bytes. The JCV file downloaded today with the 2012.30 maps is D3060040A.jcv 794,074,888 bytes. So they are not the same.

@CraigW the filenames are NOT identical. 2012.20 was named D3060030A.JCV and 2012.30 is named D3060040A.JCV

The map update process does not involve the SD card, so the files there will remain unchanged.

alandb and WAASup,

Whoops, I need my annual eye exam. I missed the 4 in place of the old 3. Yes, you are both right, the new large jcv file is different than the previous "rame1012" file.

And if file name and file size aren't enough for the rest of you, before reading the recent comments, I tried a simulation experiment with my nuvi 855:

1) Even though my 855 had more than enough room for the full large jcv file, the default 2012.30 jcv file size is about 45.4KB.

2) The old "rame1012" large roughly 771KB file designed for the 2012.20 map does not display JVs with the new 2012.30 map when doing simulated routes.

3) The new roughly 775KB jcv file meant for the new 2012.30 map does display JVs, even in Northern Arizona where the old default small jcv files showed nothing.

So, my conclusions:

First, this new manually downloaded and installed jcv file that Garmin offered today works as well on the new map as the old rame1012 file did with the previous map.

Second, Garmin deserves kudos for preemptively offering the large jcv file (which, of course, works well either in the nuvi internal memory or on a SD card in the nuvi).

Let me suggest that if you're reading this and have an email address or other form of communication to Garmin, especially to their senior troubleshooters, programmers, or admin folks, drop them a note and let them know that we owners of older JV-enabled nuvis truly appreciate what Garmin's done for us with this current 2012.30 map update.

Kudos to Garmin--and to all POI Factory folks who have discovered and tested on Day 1 of a new map update, the way to obtain a much-greater-than-default-number-of-JVs on our older nuvis!

Now I need to take the time and back up my newly updated nuvis to my computer hard drive...

Aside from JCV...

Lane assist also seems to have been updated even more in my area. I did a simulation around the New Orleans area and found that virtually every turn had lane information. So far, great map update, especially compared to the last update.

Since some of the newer units use a split screen junction view and a smaller JCV file (459,865 bytes), I was wondering if the larger 794,074,888 bytes put on those units would still display a split screen, or it may not work at all.
Since the firmware is designed for split screen, I highly doubt it could display in full screen since it wasn't designed to do that.

Can somebody confirm that assumption.

Thanks, wp3gi, for the link to the full JCV file! I updated the map and put the big JCV file on the SD card and it is all working great.

Confused (problem with install on 2460)

So, My Dashboard indicated a map update was available. I tried an update but it just switched me to a screen to download and install the Lifetime Updater or the Garmin Map Update Application. I already have those installed and both say no updates are available.

Now My Dashboard says "You started to update a map but installation was incomplete. Locate the downloaded map to begin installation." I can't find the map it thinks was downloaded (I think it's name is either gmapprom, right?). I also checked the Garmin map location in C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps\ and nothing there either.

Any ideas? I'm confused ... question

Map install

If your my.garmin account thinks you already downloaded the map, you should still be able to start over and download it again. Plug your Garmin into the computer in USB data mode. Log into your my.garmin.com account, click on the My Maps tab. It should show the 2012.30 map with a Download link. Click on Download and you will get the 2 options you mentioned in your post. Select option 2 by clicking on "Garmin map update application". Then follow the prompts to download and install the maps to your device.

>>muell9k ... will larger JCV file work on split screen JCV files?

I believe it will, but I think the proportion of the displayed junction view won't be right.

More importantly, I can't see any advantage to using the larger JCV file on "split" screen Garmin models. I don't think the larger JCV file (meant for older models) contains a different number of junction views than the smaller JCV file (meant for newer split screen models).

Now, on the "memory-challenged" 1XXX series models and others receiving the tiny (less than 50mb file), the larger JCV file (offered by Garmin in the link above) will bring the full number of junction views.

No reason to think that the larger JVC file will have a problem with split screen views. It worked fine with 2012.20 so should continue to work with 2012.30.

The larger JV file will display correctly on split screen supported models but may well appear "stretched out" on older non split screen support ones.

I can't really prove it one way or the other but IMO the larger file used in 2012.20 did in fact have more views than the file that was originally installed on my 3790. Again, no reason to think that it would be different this time.
