NA 2012.30 is available

I haven't downloaded it yet, but the lifetime updater says it is available. The download started but I aborted it because I prefer to use the older method of downloading since the new lifetime updater hangs at .05% when installing the computer files.

UPDATE: I am doing an install to the computer only right now, will probably update my 1450LMT later (or not, depending on the size of the JCV file).

Squeezed for space come 2012.40

I didn't check this until just now, but I found I only had 90MB free space left on my 1300LM even after deleting all languages and unnecessary files. So if your device has 2GB of memory, be warned that when 2012.40 is released you will have to do one of two things:

  • Split the map between internal and external memory.
  • Install the map to the MicroSD card.

Both options will require downloading the maps to the computer only, then using MapInstall to move the maps to the device.

Not updated yet

I usually update as soon as an update comes out. But feeling lazy this time, when I thing about the time and effort I need to put into it.

Thanks for the heads up!

My father has a 1300LM that I update for him, I'll have to keep this in mind when the next update happens. The MicroSD will be getting some use!

Big JCV an improvement (or so I'd think)

There were a couple of photos that showed up from the larger file which I'm sure weren't included with that smaller JCV file that the updater installed. Only problem being if you blink you'd miss it (they were up maybe 5 seconds at most)

MapInstall

@shrifty: keep an eye out on it. I have Canada and Mexico on my 1300LM as well as the US, which is why I'm down to 90MB. You probably will be able to go a bit longer if you're only updating the lower 49 the 1300LM comes with. The people with North America on 2GB devices though are going to have issues when it comes to trying to use that infernal automated updater Garmin pushes.

I suggest that people learn how to use MapInstall.

Lower 49 only

Since I'm only installing the Lower 49, I should be good until about 2013.40 smile

I'll give it until 2013.20,

I'll give it until 2013.20, if the amount of expansion of the maps is any indicator.

changes

Does anyone know a source that actually lists what updates are in 2012.30 vs 2012.20?

No changes

No changes are ever listed anywhere, too many.

Why does Garmin even have a micro SD slot if you can't install the frikking maps on it. Sheesh...

You can

Lots of discussion on this forum recently about it. Alternatively, you can use Mapsource to export maps to the SD directly.

The Garmin Way Of Selling A New Device

@visiter555: I've sent maps to the SD card for three years now on my 200W by using MapInstall. You can too, and in fact I have written up a post or two on the topic. The big thing that is being missed in this portion of the discussion isn't so much that 2012.40 may be too big for a 2GB unit, but that Garmin isn't providing instructions on how to transfer maps to the SD/MicroSD card. All they are telling users who call is that they can use a SD/MicroSD card to store the maps.

You can certainly put maps on the SD card, as well as the junction file. The SD card is also very useful for mp3 files, assuming your GPS can play mp3 files. I interchange the same SD card between a blackberry and the Nuvi to listen to audio books.

updater

I just got a 1450LMT and am trying to uses the lifetime updater with the same result. I tried the older method with similar results. It's Thanksgiving weekend so maybe that has something to do with it. Still, it looks like Garmin needs to work on its software.

New map update on nuvi 50LM

Just got back from Walmart with my new nuvi50LM and downloaded and installed the new update. Worked just fine.

Someone decided they needed my old 205W (with lifetime map updates) more than I did.... grrrrrrr

By the way the price of the nuvi 50LM is just 99 at WalMart!

Garmin nuvi 350 Lifetime Map Updates NT 2018.10

Excellent

Always love when the new maps come out.

This update didn't reset my Favorite's to a black dot, which is very nice.

Time to update

I guess I'll have to do this tonight. Gotta love this site.

Updated on Garmin Nuvi 765 with No Problem

I had no problem updating my Garmin Nuvi 765 with the latest map updates.

2012.30 Maps Installed On Nuvi 660

As I've done in the past, here are the free space stats on my 2GB 660 before and after the map updates.

The new maps will overwrite the previous one. HOWEVER - each map release is bigger than the last which means the free space gets smaller and smaller. Here are the free space numbers:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB
After 2011.10 update - 270MB
After 2011.20 update - 252MB
After 2011.30 update - 217MB
After 2011.40 update - 176MB
After 2012.10 update - 128MB
Deleted unnecessary files - 391MB
After 2012.20 update - 255MB
After 2012.30 update - 202MB

With only 128MB of free space after the 2012.10 update, I decided to remove the unnecessary files as discussed in various topics on the forum before. First, I made a current backup on the 660 on my PC - just in case. I then deleted the Audible, Vehicle, Voice & Help files I didn't need (mostly language files other than English).

That got me up to 391MB of free space before installing the 2012.20 update. I was able to install all of North America.

I installed BaseCamp by itself prior to installing the map update and avoided the "no uninstall in Control Panel" problem. Details here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34891
