BaseCamp 3.2.2 - How is it uninstalled?

OK folks, this is very weird. Before you think as I would if I saw the above subject, BaseCamp 3.2.2 does not appear in my Windows 7 Control Panel's Programs and Features (the Win7 name for the older MS Add and Remove Programs).

I have BaseCamp installed on two Windows 7 PCs, one a 32-bit and the other, 64-bit. In both cases, BaseCamp was installed as part of the latest City Nav NA NT map update (2012.30) when I chose to have the update applied to my GPS device and my computer.

I have no desire to uninstall BaseCamp now, but out of curiosity, I looked to the Programs and Features window and was very surprised to see no reference to it.

So if the time comes that I will need to uninstall BaseCamp, how will it be done? I also checked my computer's directory that holds the BaseCamp program files and see no file that appears to be a standalone uninstaller. Oddly, when doing a Google search, I find Garmin's response to be exactly what I expected:

http://iqc.garmin.com/eCustomer/KODSelfService/request.do?session={77fa53a0-0bf6-11e1-6d9e-000000000000}&event=2&view()=c%7Bbf424350-55c6-11de-f35c-000000000000%7D&objectId=&eksObjectId=&objectType=&from=recentlyViewedSolutions

The only problem with the solution is that it assumes BaseCamp appears in the list of programs that can be uninstalled.

Can some of you check and see if you also cannot find a way to uninstall BaseCamp v3.2.2 from your computer? Please state your computer operating system if this becomes important to track things down. Also state if you installed BaseCamp on its own or if BaseCamp was installed as part of the 2012.30 map update to computer.

For now, I'm flummoxed.

Shows up on my computer

I have windows 7, 64 Bit and Basecamp shows up on my Programs and Features.

me too

Not in XP Add/Remove nor anything in the City Navigator North America NT 2012.30.gmap folder, next time anyone have to contact Garmin they may want to ask how to remove it.

How did you install it?

jjen wrote:

flaco and jjen, Did you install BaseCamp on your own or was it an auto-install along with the new map update 2012.30?

Both

I had installed it sometime back and apparently was updated yesterday when I updated to 2012.3. It has yesterday's date on it.

Hmm

jjen wrote:

Hmm, I wonder if those who manually installed BaseCamp at some point have the uninstaller and those who first received BaseCamp with the 2012.30 map update do not have it uninstallable for now.

Problems with Garmin Programs

I had to reload Windows several months ago and it appeared to be caused by Garmin programs. I could not uninstall them. I think all those problems are cleared up. BaseCamp also shows up on my Revo Uninstaller Pro, which I bought after my problems.

My free version of Revo Uninstaller also does not list BaseCamp as being on my computer.

auto install

It was part of the new map, and is not working giving Net Framework initialization error when I try to run it "unable to find version of the runtime to run this application Ox0000142 error

I just want to delete it since I have MapSource and it works with my maps NT2008 and NA 2012.30

BaseCamp

Windows 7, 64-bit. Installed BaseCamp on its own shortly after letting you all know MapSource was officially discontinued. Programs and Features lists it as "Garmin Basecamp".

The simplest fix to restoring BaseCamp to the Programs and Features/Add and Remove Programs list is to install BaseCamp again, over the top of the existing install. This will rewrite the registry entries so that BaseCamp appears again on the list.

XP Shows BaseCamp in Add\Remove

I have XP and installed as a BaseCamp download file and installed myself. It does show up in add\remove so I can remove it.

I was challenged by your problem since I too was unable to find an uninstall file anywhere.I discovered that WebUpdater,POI Loader, and MapSource also don't have an uninstall file in their directories.

I did locate the registry entries for them in the registry in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

This does you no good since the reg entries in "Uninstall" only reference what is in add\remove programs.

I think Strephon_Alkhalikoi offered good advise on stating to reinstall. Download the Basecamp file from Garmin and give it a try.

P.S. Have no idea why my writing is going off the page

You and Strephon are correct. Manually installing BaseCamp:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435

corrects this issue and allows for uninstallation via Control Panel or Revo Uninstaller.

Since flaco and I both first received BaseCamp via the map update and both didn't have the uninstall option, I guess for now we'll assume that the BaseCamp installation via City Nav update was flawed in some respect, but that it's corrected when installed as a standalone program.

And for others who may have this question, both my computers had the proper MS .NET Framework already installed before BaseCamp was installed.

flaco, if you find you have issues manually installing BaseCamp or removing it because of your .NET Framework errors, report back. There are MS instructions for fixing corrupt .NET Framework installations and we'll have to find them if your issues continue.

Re: Net Framework

Like CraigW I too have latest version of Net Framework installed with all current updates.

I don't know if it's related to the Basemap issue
but it may provide a clue.

Not in Vista either

Just checked and while BC was installed without my permission on my work laptop with the new map update, it does not appear in the list to uninstall, nor does it show up in the uninstall list when I check it with CCleaner.

Pretty outrageous that Garmin would install a full application on my computer without notifying me, but then force me to install it a second time simply to uninstall it?

What IDIOT thought that would be OK with anyone?

After Uninstall, I still found bits and pieces of BaseCamp

After uninstalling BaseCamp from the add/remove files option in the control panel on my XP, I did a search of my hard drive and still found bits and pieces of BaseCamp that were not removed. rolleyes I had to delete them individually.

This isn't terribly uncommon

This isn't terribly uncommon for Windows software. 3rd party programs like Revo Uninstaller (free and paid versions available) can do a better job removing files. There may be registry issues left behind as well when uninstalling software, but from all I read, it's best not to use registry cleaners/compactors/etc. and to be very careful if manually tweaking a Windows Registry file.

And in Garmin's defense throughout this recent map update, when users select the "Install to device and computer" or "Install to computer," the map files need software to be usable and Mapsource is officially not supported by Garmin anymore, so in hindsight, the installation of BaseCamp should have been expected by us.

It is true, though, that Garmin probably should have popped up a request for permission to install BaseCamp--and the BaseCamp installed with the map update should be identical to a standalone installation; i.e., the Uninstall option should be part of its installation.

Sony anyone?

Didn't Sony get in trouble with the FCC and some other government entity for installing software without the users knowledge many years ago? Supposedly the only way to get rid of Sony's software was to reinstall the OS of the computer. This happened in the background when a Sony produced music CD was put into the CD drive to listen to. They did this, they say, to prevent piracy. I believe it also made it so that it could only be played on one system somehow. Not sure about the last part, all I know is it ticked a lot of people off.

:)

Not that I know of Flaco.

Still don't like software being installed on my computer or any device I own without my knowledge or permission.

I got to admit to very seldom reading the fine print, @rocknicehunter did you read it before installing the NA 2012.30?
Next time I have to check if it includes basecamp, BTW I can't get it to run on my PC and probably will have to download it so I can then remove it.

Bad analogy

wknight40 wrote:

The real issue with Sony's software wasn't so much its trampling all over fair use, but the method by which it was hidden from the user. BaseCamp is the exact reverse of a Sony rootkit, in that not only is it quite useful it's in plain sight. That aside, Garmin should have provided an uninstall entry in the Programs and Features/Add and Remove Programs list. Why they didn't is a matter of speculation.

Base Camp.

I downloaded and installed BC from a link I found here. It works fine and I can see it on my control panel and uninstall programs. So I guess I can uninstall it if I want to.

Maybe bad analogy

Maybe bad analogy, but similar in that software that an individual may not want is being installed. Then to get rid of that individual must spend more time to download and install again to get rid of it.

Spending five minutes

Spending five minutes installing BaseCamp just to write registry entries so you CAN uninstall isn't remotely the same as having to reinstall an entire OS, something that takes far longer to do, to get rid of Sony crapware.

I admit that they should have provided an uninstall routine for the bundled version of BaseCamp and that it should have been made clear that BaseCamp would be downloaded. But you have compared BaseCamp to spyware and malware. In order for the comparison to be valid, BaseCamp would have to do things regularly associated with spyware and malware. It doesn't, therefore the comparison is not valid.

By the way, there is an easier method to get rid of BaseCamp than by installing it again: delete the files from the directory they are installed in, usually Program Files\Garmin\Basecamp. Spyware wouldn't be so easy to remove.

No Flaco I did not. i know I've railed about that in the past, but I usually don't do that. One of those things I agreed to might just have had "This installs Base Camp on your computer" buried down in there somewhere.

Caught in my own web I guess.

Preferances?

Got just around to downloading the new NA 2012.30 map. Noticed in the preferences there is three options.

Install to my device
Install to my Mac (I have a Mac)
Install to both

I believe "both" is the default so for the map to be useable on the PC or the Mac it does need to install Basecamp. Granted it still does not explain why there is no uninstall on PC.

My comparison to "Sony" had nothing to do with spyware or malware. It was meant only to show that software has been installed behind our backs before and it will continue.

Now in the case of Basecamp by not checking the preferences to see what installation is chosen we are in fact allowing Basecamp to be installed even without the uninstall option.

Good intentions marred by poor execution

Yet your comparison used a known piece of spyware/malware. Therefore you were in fact comparing BaseCamp to spyware/malware, even if not intending to. A better comparison would be comparing the current Garmin install with QuickTime, which installs iTunes subcomponents even if you don't plan on using iTunes. While the subcomponents do have uninstall routines, uninstalling them renders QuickTime useless.

I believe the uninstall or lack thereof is a glitch on Garmin's part. In other words, accidental and not premeditated.

No uninstall if BaseCamp is new to computer

mgarledge wrote:

I did the update 2012.30 to my Windows 7 netbook that did not have the Base Camp previously installed.

BaseCamp is on my netbook but it does not show in the uninstall.

So I do see uninstall on the one I already had BaseCamp on. I do not see uninstall on the one I did not have BaseCamp on.

question PS: If anyone knows how to use BaseCamp and understands about the file system they use will they start a post "How to Use BaseCamp". Others can add to this post as they learn things. I am so used to Mapsource (and old) that I am having trouble learning this program. Thanks, Mary

What I Did

After reading this topic I decided to take a different approach with my Win7 64-bit laptop.

1. Uninstalled MapSource (and maps) from Control Panel.

2. Used CCleaner to clean out remaining files & clean the Windows Registry. Reboot the laptop.

3. Downloaded BC from the Garmin website: http://www.garmin.com/us/products/onthetrail/basecamp

4. Right-clicked on the downloaded file and selected Run as Administrator.

5. After the installation completed I looked in Control Panel and saw that there was an uninstall entry for BC.

I then logged into MyGarmin and downloaded & installed the new 2012.30 maps to both PC & nuvi. Worked like a charm. BC now has the detailed maps and so does the nuvi 660. grin grin grin grin
