Doesn't Work!

See Shirke's post on another thread regarding his response from Garmin re: Small JCV on series with small memory size. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33977

He was told to "choose a smaller region such as Lower 49 states and also choose the option to install the maps to your computer and device...The map update will install the smaller region and also install the full junction view file." You would then put any other maps on an SD card or your unit, if you have the space.

Just Garmin BS.

@Jjen

Did you try the smaller region install and not get a bigger JCV file or are you just making a statement?

Only Get Small JCV installing smaller region

bear007 wrote:

I can confirm that smaller doesn't get you a bigger JCV file.

I downloaded Canada and Border States and got a D317801A.JCV file that was 49.8 MB.

My update (nuvi 1490T)

I did the old-fashioned update and got:

52239657 - D3178010A.JCV

This was selecting 'Lower 49' from the update.

I cleared out all of the junk files and still have 374MB out of the 2GB left so the smaller JCV file wasn't due to space.

I know this is talked about

I know this is talked about somewhere in all these Posts about new Map but going to ask again. When I did update with new Lifetime updater it says I don't have enough room on device for full Map and I have to choose a Regional area. It not that big of a deal because I probably only ever use in my SE Region but is there a way to "force" full update? Can I delete old Map or something 1st to get more space?

Thanks

Have you cleared off the unused files

Have you cleared off the unused files that are not needed such as voice and help?

Be sure you back the unit up before doing so.

Deleting the old map won't help you because the update software "knows" the old map will be overwritten by the new one.

What you can do to make more room and hopefully then be able to install more of the map update, is to delete unneeded help files and voice files. The voice files in particular take up a lot of room. Keep American English and the Jack/Jill, Karen/Kee, Emily/Daniel, etc. but you can safely remove the rest.

Before deleting files (and really, do this in your first few days of GPS ownership and after every map/firmware/etc update), be sure to make a full backup of your entire GPS onto a computer hard drive.

Darn

Same size file

bear007 wrote:

The first time I downloaded US and Canada. I got the 49MB file.

I tried the lower 49 and got the same size file.

My opinion is that older and cheaper units get the small file. Expensive units get the larger files.

Thanks for the info on

Thanks for the info on removing files before update. I just went ahead and did a Regional update this time but will try to remember removing Voice and unneeded files next time.

Just used updater

I just used the updater. It went throught the motion of installing the map to my computer then it said there was an install ready for my device. My 2450 was plugged in so I clicked install and got the following message:

"There was an error installing your maps. If problems continue please contact Garmin customer support."

I unplugged and replugged but still the same thing. I looked on Mapsource and I still have the 2012.1 map on it.

What file does the installer install the map to?

Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks

Garmin

Garmin is working on a fix for this error message and should be out next week. If your getting the error message, press OK and then you should get a message that the update completed successfully.

If that doesn't happen, just check the GPS and Mapsource or BaseCamp to insure the 2012.20 maps are listed. If so, then your good to go.

I went through the download. It took about an hour. Then when it said to install maps I clicked install. I then get the agree page. I click agree to their license then It goes to the error message. I click ok at the error message and it takes me back to the first page that said maps are ready to install.

The 2012.1 is still on Mapsource and also still on the gps.

I don't know what file to look in to see if it did download to my pc. It did not install to my gps or Mapsource.

Try

Try looking in C:/Users/All Users/Garmin. That's were I see the 2012.20 files. Don't know if you can install them from there but in one of the folders there is a .msi file that looks like it could be an installation program. Just a guess.

I am looking for someone with a 3760 who used the new auto-updater in order to see if you get different file sizes with the different methods.

The file sizes for our 3760s are the same. I went to the Garmin site and used the old method to update to 2012.20.

Did you use the old method or did you use the new auto-updater?

I used the old method because the new lifetime updater said it could not connect to Garmins servers and to try again later. After 24 hours of trying at least 5 dozen times, I gave up and did it the old way.

Got it

I updated my Dad's Nuvi 765t and noticed he got the 51mb JCV file, so I deleted it and replaced it with my 150mb JCV file and it works fine. If any of you have Nuvi's that support the 'lane assist' feature and want the larger JCV file, please contact me and I can send you a link.

It should. You can always copy your old JCV to your hard drive before deleting it from your Garmin so you can put it back in a worse-case scenario. It's the same map across the board of Nuvi's, so as long it fits on your GPS, there is no reason I can think of why it wouldn't work.

Although this file will be an improvement over the 51MB file that the updater is installing, please remember that the largest JCV reported in the other thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33977 is 457MB. In other words, this file that you are downloading still doesn't include all the JV's that Garmin makes available on other models.

Carey934 and myself have now proven that JCV files copied from one model , will work on a different model. You might all want to look for a source for the larger 457MB file.

I think Garmin's Junction View/Lane Assist was originally drawings Garmin artists created from photos. This made it more time-consuming to get new updates created and took up more space. Finally someone realized they had the photos from the Garmin vehicles driving around, and why not use those instead? I can't remember which map update it was, but on one of my GPS's it went from 'cartoon view' which rarely showed me a Lane Assist, to 'photograph view' which, also, reduced the file size of the JCV file and brought up several Lane Assists that never came up before in my daily drve.

So my question is, do these larger JCV files display 'cartoons' or actual photographs?

I may be wrong but I think the tiny SUM file is an error check of the JCV file to make sure it's not corrupt. In any event, it takes up essentially no space. I have had both on my nuvi as well for the current and past map updates.

To be safe, MOVE the older file to your PC and make sure that the remaining file works with your Nuvi. If so you can then delete the moved file from your PC.

I have a garmin 755T.

I have read somewhere that The JCV from the 3790 will "work" on the 7x5 series, but the images will only occupy the middle 1/3 of the screen so they're very difficult to see.

Me too -- and here's a new theory

Juggernaut wrote:

Carey, I have a 775, and the last update to the jcv was 358 megs. But, I downloaded it on the first day 2012.10 was out. Later that week, Garmin shrank the file by a ridiculous amount.

I also have the big file from the 1st day's download of the 2012.10 map and remember a short time later hearing folks who had to redownload found that they had a smaller file.

Here's my theory. [I like this theory because one tiny error months ago explains almost everything we've seen happening here.]

When 2012.10 first came out, there was a single large jcv file offered to those updating whose nuvis supported JV. One of two things then occurred which resulted in the smaller file size and variable file size being offered: 1) the original 1-size-fits-all was a mistake and multiple files should have been offered; or 2) Garmin very quickly realized that the large file was too big for some nuvi models and they quickly came up with the multiple jcv file size offering.

In any event, Garmin's thinking now may be that the later 2012.10 variable size offering was (and still is) what Garmin feels future updates should be compared to. If true, then the recent 2012.20 kerfuffle is not and will not be addressed by Garmin because they feel the 2012.20 jcv files offered are similar to the latter 2012.10 offerings and that to compare the new jcv files to the 1-size-fits-all that was offered and retracted is not a fair comparison.

Note, too, that our POI Factory members are much more up-to-date on new map offerings and we may have a vastly larger percentage of the user base who downloaded the update early and got the big jcv file. Among the nationwide user base who updated to 2012.10 and 2012.20, they won't even know of the large jcv file in the earlier update since they installed 2012.10 after multiple jcv files were offered.

The bad news is that if true, Garmin feels it has no obligation to offer the larger file to those of us with older smaller nuvis who had experienced the large JV file. They may feel that we're getting the appropriate file for the age, size, cost of the nuvi we're updating. To them, it may not be an issue of the technical feasibility of swapping between jcv file sizes within a given map version date but is that they will feel that obtaining a larger jcv file than your model was intended to receive is simply software piracy. If true, we may see in future map updates that the jcv files will not be swappable but will be locked to a specifc nuvi model & map version or even to a GPS serial number as most maps now are.

I like this theory because a simple error (Garmin offering a single jcv file for everyone for a few days at the beginning of the 2012.10 update offering) explains why Garmin isn't responding and won't respond to our efforts to obtain bigger (and in Garmin's view, undeserved) jcv files (both for the 2012.20 updaters and those 2012.10 updaters who had to reinstall the map only to find a smaller JCV file). The theory is also nice since it was an error made by Garmin a few months ago that's caused the ruckus now--and we users can easily accept an explanation based upon Garmin making a mistake wink It also explains why we're seeing so much anger here at the POI Factory which may not be representative of the nation-wide group of JV-able lifetime numaps subscribers--here at the Factory, we have a much greater percentage of updaters who updated to 2012.10 on Day 1 and therefore have had the wonderfully large JV file to use for the past three months.

Although I have reason to believe my theory is correct, it's not the theory that I wish were true.

Oops

Juggernaut wrote:

Craig, note that he has 2 jcv's on the 3790.

Oops, you can tell I'm more attuned to 855 info. I offer no explanation for the double jcv files on the big unit. But for the 855, the sum file is probably still and error checking file of the associated jcv.

Screen Resolution

The 3760 has a 800 x 480 pixels screen so his JCV file may or may not work correctly on the 480 x 272 pixel screens. I'm guessing the file will work OK but is bigger to start with due to the larger picture size needed to fill the screen. The 800 x 480 picture size is 3 times larger than the 480 x 272 pictures so the 159 MB might be the new big file for 480 x 272 screens. Seeing the new JVs, since mine were missing on the last map, they look different than the ones I remember. I think they've changed the color depth or something to make the files smaller.

The 2460's have 480 x 272 screen but being the larger screen size the JVs only display on half the screen. It works on a older 480 x 272 fine but only fills half the screen.

It would be nice to find someone with 480 x 272 screen that has full screen JVs like my zumo 660 and 7765Ts that has the full JCV file. It might be the 159 MB file.
