Clarifying my question

Who has used the new GarminLifetimeUpdaterInstaller.exe, and what size jcv did you get?

• AJ500 used the new installer. 8 gig nuvi, and got the large jcv
• I used the old way. 8 gig nuvi, and got the small one
• Self Ruler has a 4 gig, and got a medium sized file. Don't know if they used the new or old way

JCV file

It appears that there may be a relationship between memory size and JCV file size.

775 - 49.8 MB - Juggernaut
3760 - 152 MB (159,836,415 bytes) - selfruler
3790 - 446 MB (468,025,344 bytes) - AJ500

Would it be recommended to start removing unwanted files, like voices ect. from the GPS prior to the new map install? This would increase memory size on the GPS and then may increase JCV file. I'll check for map update on my 2350LMT and will post response later tonight.

I used the old update method to get 51MB of JCVs, not that different from your 49MB.

If JCV file size will increase with the new method, I suppose I'll re-update to 2012.20 with the autoupdater, but I fear the jcv file size is determined by nuvi model # and not by update method or free space on the to-be-updated nuvi.

With more data from other updaters, we should be able to figure out roughly what Garmin's doing.

I am still seething at Garmin for what they just did to my 855 with no warning or alert.

What's going on?

I Used Option 2 for the Download

Juggernaut wrote:

Did you use the new updater/ installer?

I used Option 2 on the Garmin.com site to update both my 255 and 3760.

The 255 does not have JCV.

At 152 MB, the 3760's JCV file is about 55 MB larger than the previous file.

With so few reports in, it's too early to give a definite answer.

But note that I removed most help and voice files on my 855 before starting the update--specifically with the hope that it'd give me a bigger jcv file--but I was given a tiny jcv file, 14% the size that it was with the last map.

My guess is that Garmin's software doesn't assign a jcv file size based on free space but rather makes assumptions on what jcv file can be loaded to your nuvi based on model number of your nuvi. Grr!

OK

JCV File

On my 1490 I have the 51MB file. On a few tests I had more views than with the 367MB for 2012.1.

I used the standard method of download.

I noticed the estimated time remaining is low by about a factor of ten with their new version of the update file.

Map Updates

I find that it's best to wait until Garmin notifies me of any updates. Many times, we get bad information about these thing.

What's Going On?

As others previously reported, mygarmin shows the 2012.20 update, but the Lifetime Updater says there's no update available. It's been that way all day.

2012.2 - maybe

Just fired-up my PC at home. Ran the LifeTime updater and it said - No new maps ---- but it said there was an Updater update available, and did I want to update? I said Yes. It installed and then said that there was a new map available (now, why didn't the previous version see it, unless it just got posted, maybe).

Anyway, it's downloading a "new" map and we shall see!

Lifetime 2012.20 Now Available for download

It's Available now North America 2012.20

New D/L record!

Took less than 1/2 hour to Download. Last time I updated, it took almost an hour.

Waiting to see how long the install takes. Am installing to PC and Nuvi 660.

Lifetime Updater Good - JCV Not So Good

WAASup wrote:

I think some people may be misunderstanding the Lifetime Updater program. It currently only goes out and checks for updates once per week. It will not see the update on its own until the 7th day after it's last check. Other than that it has a "Check Now" button that I used today when I got home which immediately found and started the download.

The program's biggest feature is that it automates the download and install without having to log to MyGarmin.

Lifetime updater worked fine on my first GPS (Zumo 660).

The JCV file size was 49.8 MB. The file name is "D3178010A.JCV". What are some other JCV filenames with their sizes? This doesn't make any sense since the zumo has 4 GB of memory.

Shoot shoot shoot

If you haven't updated ... PLEASE don't do it!!!!

I have been fighting multiple Auto Updater crashes on my 1450LMT ... and finally resorted to just selecting the "single update" option ... and choosing the "LOWER 49."

End result? A JCV file of 51 megs ... with ALL OF MY KNOWN JUNCTION VIEWS not included in the 2012.2 update.

This is just plain stupid ...

And I'm restoring my 1450LMT "LIMITED MEMORY PIECE OF SHIT" to 2012.1

For Garmin to sell a model that is so memory limited to customers who then can't update or get the entire Junction View file is criminal.

Plain and simple, if you haven't upgraded to 2012.2 ... DON"T!!!!!!

With the Lifetime updater, I clicked check for updates. It showed no updates available. Then I had to go into settings -> about -> check for updates to get the new version of the lifetime updater. It did not automatically detect there was a new updater available. After updating the updater, it still shows no new maps available.

BIGGER JCV - smaller file size

On my zumo 660 with 4 GB memory the old JCV was 358 MB ... BUT ... the new JCV has many more JVs and is only 49.8 MB.

Garmin has obviously changed the format, resolution, colors or something in the pics or they are only giving me the JVs in my area of the country.

Yes, both of those files are needed. gmapbmap is the base file, and the gmapprom is the main map file.

Possibly

Possibly, gmapprom.img is the main map file on your Nuvi. Without it the device is fairly useless.

gmapbmap.img is the World Basemap file which is used when your in an area not covered by the maps included in the gmapprom.img file.

I suppose you could possibly remove the gmapbmap file and if you only used the Nuvi in Canada and US you'd be OK. Try moving it to your computer and see what happens.

Updated 1490LMT

Before the new map install I had 287MB free. After the install I'm down to 137.3MB. I did go through it a few weeks ago and removed all of the unneeded language file that I do not use. Not sure if I'll need to do this again a yet or not.

Did not see the JCV file everyone is talking about. I'm on a Mac so it might be hidden somewhere. I guess I may have the larger file since I have 137MB left.

Nuvi 250 no JV 1.85GB

Nuvi 250 no JV 1.85GB internal, free space with Full NA 2012.1 438MB, with Full NA 2012.2 302MB.

You probably got the smaller +/- 50MB file and it's in the JCV folder inside the .system folder which is a hidden system folder(have no ideas how you see that on a MAC).

The size of the junction view file you receive has very little, if anything, to do with the amount of free space on your Nuvi. Garmin has made a decision on the size of the JV file for all models based not on free space of a particular unit but on the size of the internal storage for a particular series of Nuvi's.

So on the 7x5, 8xx and 1xxx models the smallest internal storage drive on any model within the series is 2 or 4GB. Garmin has decided that the JV file for those models will be the smaller size because of the risk of those units not having enough space to hold the whole map file (gmapprom.img) and the large JV file offered for units with 8GB of internal storage.

I'm not saying a agree with this decision but from Garmin's point of view it solves a couple of problems for them as it cuts down their support effort when they pretty much guaranty that the map file will install without issues if you make the JV file small enough. Good for them, but not the best solution for us. sad

Junction View File 2012.20

I just downloaded 2012.20 to my 765t the old school way (through myGarmin). Didn't wanna chance anything because I saw some of the comments about problems updating with the new updater program. My Junction View file is 51 MB. Some of you say that the junction view coverage in your area increased, even though the file was smaller. Well mine did the exact opposite. Everywhere I simulated, I got no junction view. Overall, this was not a very good update. I feel like Garmin took a step in the wrong direction.

No Profit

anzial wrote:

No profit in doing that kind of support.

SDHC Card

I think Garmin should modify their software to allow the option of installing the entire map and all supporting files onto a SDHC Card.

Then even if one owns a Nuvi with very little memory, he can spend $10 or $20 for an 8GB SDHC Card and be able to update maps for many years to come.

People affected by this should contact Garmin asking for this feature.

Did that last update

Downloading Smaller Region May Result in Larger JCV File

See Shirke's post on another thread regarding his response from Garmin re: Small JCV on series with small memory size. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33977

He was told to "choose a smaller region such as Lower 49 states and also choose the option to install the maps to your computer and device...The map update will install the smaller region and also install the full junction view file." You would then put any other maps on an SD card or your unit, if you have the space.
