No surprise. The only way Garmin makes money is to constantly discontinue models and push out "newer" models with a higher MSRP.

I say "newer" with a grain of salt because Garmin really hasn't put out a PND with any innovative features. They just keep recycling features from older models. And before anyone tries to argue with me please tell which which Nuvi model has as many features as a five year old Streetpilot.

not

all are higher priced, in fact the price is going down. No problem coming out with new models. No reason to buy one until your model dies.

yes!!!

Yes! I must agree 100%. That's a naked truth about Garmin's inovation...unfortunately...

discontinued

Yes I see that my 765T is discontinued also. I hope that Garmin will still continue to support it with my lifetime map subscription. So far so good.

As I have said before, give me a GPS that has the features of my old Streetpilot 2820 and the screen from one of the Nuvis and I would be in GPS heaven.

according to this there is a limit on "lifetime"

²Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. Garmin may terminate your Lifetime Map Updates at any time if you violate any of the terms of the End User License Agreement accompanying your nüvi product.

Planned obsolescence

just my luck. Had to be the model I have. Oh well it's back to using the cross-staff with the Big Dipper

lucky you

At least you kept your cross-staff....I threw mine away. Trying to find road maps is getting more and more difficult. May have to quit traveling.

My Fault

Sorry people it's all my fault. Shortly after I bought my Street Pilot they discontinued that one and I bought the 255W about a month ago... before I buy another I'll be sure to let you all know so that you can do whatever you need to do with it before hand. wink

I still have a sextant left over from the military flight days -- maybe I should consider mounting that in the roof of the truck as backup... smile

End of an era

My roommate has one of these. The fact it's discontinued isn't a killer, since it still does what it is supposed to do. The discontinued notice though was rather long overdue in my mind, and should have come out a lot sooner after the introduction of the 1xxx nüvis. Especially as the 1xxx nüvis are Garmin's entry level units today.

The 2xx series units though should be remembered as groundbreaking in one important respect. They were the first units, if I recall correctly, that were affordable for the average consumer. Even at their initial MSRP of $428 they were still reasonably affordable compared to the initial $969 MSRP of the 350. It was the 2xx series, more than any other line from Garmin, that fueled the growth of the GPS receiver market.

nüvi 2xx series: 2007-2011.

c320

my C320 is still functioning.

Doesn't mean much

It doesn't mean too much when Garmin discontinues a model. My 750 has been discontinued for a long time now yet they're still releasing software updates for it (see the recent ill-fated 5.1).

Big deal

These weren't works of art.

They were low end navigators that were a stepping stone on the road to dumbing down the technology so the masses could deal with them rather than being blinded into immobility by having to deal with the extensive customization capabilities of their predecessors.

Perhaps they could be thought of as the first of the devices that were the harbinger of the end of the road for Garmin, TomTom and the others, as the technology started to become demystified and became standard equipment, leading to the eventual downfall and bankruptcy of the retail consumer sections of these specialized companies as the technology was folded into the cars, phones, watches and other tools of the day.

However I would personally suggest that this began with the release of the original C, and i series which preceded the Nuvis.

Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

But where...

But where are the features of the 7x5 or 8x5 series? There is no MP3 player in any unit now.

Holy Nautical Almanac batman!

I don't think so. I still have a sextant along with Pub HO 249 and Pub HO 229 for my latitude. I can say from first hand experience that my "obsolete" 285W can still beat using those hands down both in accuracy and time to get a fix. smile

Quite Some Time

rvrrat wrote:

Actually it has been discontinued for quite some time now (last year). Sadly, almost as soon as they discontinue it, the software updates stop. There are still a few glitches in the 7x5 series that need fixing but I doubt we will ever see a follow on to version 4.00. Recently there was a firmware update to the 7x0 series that was so bad Garmin pulled it and has yet to release a replacement.

I for one plan to keep my 765T as long as possible. I have had it just over a year and it is working fine. I will replace the battery when it eventually fails and I have lifetime maps on it that I hope Garmin will continue to support for a long time though they do reserve the right to stop supporting it before I do.

stable and keep going

This mirrors the fact that there will be a stable market for PND...

3. GPS receiver sales are decreasing because the market has stabilized.

4. A stable market changes focus from growing its userbase to servicing that userbase by offering upgrades for existing equipment and by offering services. For the GPS receiver market, the focus is on equipment upgrades, map update subscriptions, and traffic subscriptions.

5. There is no relationship between the increase in smarpthone sales and the decrease in GPS receiver sales. They are two different markets, offering items to two different groups.

My 320 locks up

Mine locks up to the point I have to remove the frame around the front and push the button

Discontinued

That's OK. I was discontinued years ago, yet I still function - after a fashion. Wish I could still be updated.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

nuvi 350

My Nuvi 350 is still going strong. Will use it till the day it dies. I would like one or two extra features like showing lanes, but it can wait.

I haven't really kept up

I haven't really kept up with the new models, but I haven't heard of anything that would make me replace my 760, and by the time I might have to it'll likely be replaced by an Android machine.

AS is my C530...

I got my 660 for Christmas four years ago and it still works fine. As it got older things started to fall off - just like me razz

Never used the traffic subscription, don't use the MP3 player, and only occasionally use the Bluetooth. It would be nice to have the route feature.

I have a lifetime maps subscription and the POI Factory and have never had a problem with the unit. I believe they discontinued it two years ago, but it still works fine grin

My Garmins...

All my Garmins have been discontinued for at least 3 years now and it's still kicking...

I look at the models that came after the 765T and I find nothing I want. They removed in the newer models:

1) MP3 Player
2) FM Transmitter
3) Audio out jack

About the only useful feature they have carried on, IMHO, is Bluetooth but I wonder how long that will last.

The Bluetooth in the 7x5 series is not as good as the older models. My C550, which is now with my youngest sister, has rock solid BT support.

various versions

My C320 running with map stored in then expensive 1G SD, now is my backup navigation tool. (that maybe the reason it can last longer) The map is at 2006 level, but, still good.

My current 1940T, in addition to missing those three Aardvak mentioned,
1) MP3 Player
2) FM Transmitter
3) Audio out jack

It also does not display caller ID when BT is used. I believe this is not an intentional software bug.

You just have to many to choose from, like it or not , IMO. So is smartphone.

just bought a 255WT

Best Buy was selling their 255W with Traffic for $79.99 and I bought one for either a gift or a possible backup. It'll stay in the shrink wrap unitl I decide what to do with it. Yes, it lacks some features, mainly routes but it is a great little mid-level unit. Besides, it's a VERY good price on a traffic receiver - and you get a fully functional GPS thrown in!

Discontinued Units

I still miss the StreetPilot units.

They had many features that are no where to be seen on todays models.

I agree 100% with you.

Don B wrote:

The 2820 is a fantastic unit. The different detour options alone make it better than any current unit.

255W My First GPS

The nuvi 255W was (is) my first GPS. I've had it for a couple of years and it has performed flawlessly. Recently installed a map update and hopefully it will last several more years.

Not sure what current model closely matches the 255W.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

About time. With 5" units out, that one is ancient.

Sad to see my model finally discontinued but then again its been sitting in the glove box for more than a year. Smartphones make it too easy to get where you're going these days.

It's wonderfull that you are so loyal and positive...but...Garmin might change your plan easily... They discontinued 7x5's, because they were unable to fix all issues they had with those models and simply removed problematic features in new models...

The 1xxx line of nüvis are the new entry-level units. The closest unit to the 255W in that line is the 1350. I believe the only difference between the two is the 1350 has lane assist.

My Nuvi 350 may be discontinued, but I used it for the last 3 days while in the Tampa, FL area heading to places that I hadn't had the foggiest of their locations.

Just because it's discontinued doesn't mean it isn't fully useful!
