Install weirdness

The download and install went fine for my 760. I clicked the box to leave the install files on my computer. The new maps show on the nüvi.

Then I tried the install on my 78S. The installer checked and found the files still on the computer and claimed to install them but the unit still only showed the old maps after a reboot. Hmmmmmmmmm......... I tried again and found that it had now deleted the file and had to download it again. Fine. After it did that and "installed" the maps to the 78S the unit STILL only showed the old maps!

I finally tried just sending the entire mapset from Mapsource to the unit and that seems to have worked.

Oddly enough it now shows BOTH the old maps and the new maps available. I'll have to check tonight to see if one was automagically sent to the microSD card on the 78S instead of to the unit. Once I determine where the proper mapset is I'll dump the old maps.

Thanks for the info DrewDT! Now I know I should go ahead and update my maps.

My update went well for my 295w. I see the new road, James F Epps road, is now displayed connecting to Highway 76 in Branson. They don't have Outer road updated between Yakov Smirnoff theater and WalMart.

Hmmm... I would think you could delete the old maps off your unit since it's taking up space, but I can't say for sure if it's safe to do that.

I'm sure there is someone on the forum who is knowledgeable to advise you on that.

Initially, when I logged into MyGarmin, I got after a few seconds a display saying I had a map update available.

I had forgotten how this all worked, so after downloading the updater (GarminMapUpdater_v2.5.17.exe) I neglected to run it. Subsequently MyGarmin no longer offered me the update, not just on the front page, but down in "Manage Maps" as well. Manage maps showed my previous update downloads. "Download history" however showed 2011.40, marked with an expiration date of today.

Of course, I did not need any of that--what I needed to do was execute the (already downloaded) MapUpdater.

From that point it went without error, though the progress information was quite erratic. Initially it forecast 38 minutes download time, 5 minutes prep time, and 38 minutes install time.

The actual download rate I observed was a very nearly constant 825 kbytes/sec (quite likely that is the throttle rate Comcast imposes on long downloads for me). There was a brief section of perhaps 5 minutes near the end in which that dropped to about 400.

The actual prep time was under two minutes--possibly a lot under.

The install time was 24 minutes. The "disk write rate" during much of that averaged about 1.4 Mbyte/sec, though near the end it did a stretch at about 2.0. The remaining time indicator was very erratic, and still showed several minutes of remaining time seconds before actual completion.

So for me, with a Comcast connection, a fast PC, and a Garmin 855, the total time from the time MapUpdater began actually download was 91 minutes.

The latest MapInstall is 3.14.4 and you can download it here:

The latest MapSource is 6.16.3 and you can download that here:

Got my update

Got my update today.

Got it

I got this downloaded with my Mac Mini, selected advanced options and checked both boxes to install map onto my Nuvi 760 and to use the map on the system. On my second Mac, a MacbookPro, I hooked up the Nuvi, said download again, selected advanced options, UNCHECKED the option to install on the NUVI but CHECKED the box that said to install the map on the mac. Now I have the map on both machines and on the NUVI so I'm all set. It all worked very smoothly, so it's all good.

I noted that one intersection I was VERY concerned about, Calif Hiway 101 S at Channel Dr/Hot Springs Rd in Montecito, CA has been updated to drop the non-existent on-ramp onto 101 S and add the new Roundabout at nearby Hot Springs Rd. Good stuff - the old map routing could send an unsuspecting tourist who wanted to go 101 S onto the OFF-RAMP of 101 N. I reported it six months ago, so glad it made it in.

The other day I logged into Garmin My Maps and noticed a link that I believe said Lifetime Maps nothing for 2011.40. Any way not sure what I clicked on but it vanished. I just logged in once again to see if the download link had arrived and I still didn't see anything for 2011.40. I clicked on download history and sure enough there it is. It shows an expiration date of Feb 17, 2012. I will download the the update to my Garmin tomorrow. My wife and I leave for a Florida trip in two weeks.

My Maps 2011.x version confusion

I have Lifetime maps on three Garmin units. My units are currently loaded with 2011.30 maps. When I checked My Maps on my Garmin online account today I noticed that lifetime maps updates were available, but the map update download button is shown under 2011.20, not as an update to 2011.30 or new downloadable map 2011.40 version. This is very confusing. Anybody else see their map updates displayed the same way? I presume since the update buttons weren't there last week they're really download links to 2011.40 even though they're confusingly labelled.

It was the same for me with both of my units. But the updates to 2011.40 worked just fine. Who knows why Garmin posted the updates this way? Maybe they use the same programmers for their web site that they do for their firmware wink

The great majority, possible all, of the JV file size increase is due to the 3000+ Photoreal views added to the maps of Canada.

Intersection found on Navteq

There is a relatively new intersection (about a year old now) on highway 71 just south of Belton, MO. I checked it out on 2011.40 and it is not there, so I went to the Navteq site and there it was plain as day, correctly displayed and labeled. It has probably been there for a while. I wonder why it is not in the new update yet plainly displayed on the Navteq site.
Any suggestions?

I have the 765t and downloaded the new map. Try it again.

Update Firmware First using Web Updater

Updated last night. I was running firmware 4.9 on my 1490T and when I ran the 2011.40 map installer it wanted to do a firmware update first (current is 5.0). It went ahead and downloaded the firmware and afterwards asked me to disconnect the device and allow it to boot and update. Nope. No sign of a firmware re-load when it rebooted. Re-started the installer and did it again. Didn't work the second time. So, I ran Web Updater to get the firmware up to date first, then re-ran the map installer. After that it downloaded the map successfully.

The same thing happened earlier when I had done the 2011.30 map update, and the firmware needed updating first. But at that time I ignored the fact that the firmware didn't seem to update, and let the map installer proceed. It went through the motions of the map download, processing, etc., said my map was updated ... but nope it wasn't. I left the SD card out when doing the map update, so there was no other place for the map to go but the device. I found out that if I did the firmware update first, then teh map would install on the device.

Just something to watch out for. Make sure your firmware is up to date first, because the 2-step process might not work. I don't know if this is a Windows 7 problem, but I never saw it on my old XP machine.

It's Time

Thank you to all of you who offer advice, give reviews, answer questions, ask questions and are just plain friendly and helpful. You know who you are. I love this place.

I also love my 760, but I haven't updated the maps since I got it. I keep thinking that lifetime updates would be a waste if my GPS suddenly dies, or what if the price goes down? What if... What if?

I'm reading what seems like mostly good comments here. I've also had one occassion when the map didn't have a street that has been built shortly after I bought my GPS. It's time for me to get off the fence and update.

It was added after Garmin downloaded the data from NAVTEQ (I believe that was on Jan-10-2011). Garmin downloads the data, converts it to their format and begins testing for about 1 and a half months before publishing the update (2011.40). That means it will be there on the 2012.10 update.

I have the same situation. The latest Garmin (Navteq) map still doesn't show street names in my area (though the streets are shown) but the Navteq site is correct. It must take a release or two for a full migration.
