nassau county NY (Long Island) announces its 50 new red light cameras today

Nassau County NY Legislature announced today its list of 50 new red light cameras to be installed. They say they will be placed on high risk intersections and bring in 4 million in revenue. I have the list of intersections and will create new poi files today to be uploaded to the red light file. All cameras are expected to be operational by the end of september.

Red light cameras

Today's Newsday lists the proposed intersections for Nassau and Suffolk.

Red Light Camera

Now all they need to do is put up some Speed Cameras

Ouch

With that kind of investment, I wonder how much they will shorten the yellow lights so they can recoup some funds! Heck, just remove the yellow lights altogether and go directly from green to red, that'll rake in the dough. razz

i made a file of the new

i made a file of the new cameras, suffolks red light cameras have not gone to legislation yet, nassaus were approved today and will be in place by sept. i am sending the file to miss poi so she can update the red light file. i agree, i will be driving every where with my gps on now

it cant be aout revenu

it is against the law for the county to put up red light cameras to generate revenue (yea right) they are being put up to try and reduce the mount of accidents in dangerous intersections!!! and if you believe that, i have a bridge in brooklyn for sale

I live 1 1/2 blocks from one

I live 1 1/2 blocks from one of the new camera locations and 1/2 mile from another.

I would be the first to complain about unsafe intersections but they are not unsafe. People do not openly run red lights and there have not been any accidents that I am aware of.

Everybody knows the cameras are to raise money. Why don't they just admit it?

The cameras are mostly at major intersections. The red light running usually occurs at the smaller intersections where there are no cameras.

New Nassau County Camera's

Hello. Thanks for the info. I was hoping by now the new file would be ready for the 50 new camera's being installed. If it is not posted yet, what would the file name be? I am a paid registered user. Thanks.

The key words are, Being Installed!

Once the cameras go live, they will be combined into the database that can be downloaded here.

The plan is to have the first cameras installed by September, with the balance by the end of the year or early 2010.

ETA: Per today's (June 29) Newsday, the first 20 cameras should be installed by September 1, with the balance by February 2010.

In a separate story on Sunday, Nassau officials said no intersections have been chosen, but at least 45 of the 50 sites originally proposed by the county will probably stand.

Yes, that was part of the legislation authorizing the RLCs in Nassau. All intersections with RLCs should have a sign - it's the standard diamond traffic signal warning sign with "Photo Enforced" added".

How do you know you were

How do you know you were caught?

Oh...you know!!!

Oh...you know!!!

It is usually the realization that the light just turned red after a now shortened yellow and you were in the intersection while your mind finally processed the "photo enforced" sign just before the intersection- plus (if it is dark outside) that flash of light that says, "smile"!

The special letter that comes in the mail a few weeks later further feeds your suspicion and seals your fate!

(A bit tongue in cheek- but perhaps all likely!)

Of course your mileage may vary.

It amazes me that Nassau

It amazes me that Nassau county can afford all these cameras but cannot add a 4way stop sign on my corner in Freeport. There have been at least two deadly accidents on this corner. There is a stop sign on the side street but none on the main street.
The main street is the only cross street on the end of a long canal and gets heavy use. Most of the cars go way over the speed limit (25mph) and when there is an accident it is usually pretty bad. One of the problems is the amount of elderly people living in this area.

The reason is the cities don't pay..YOU DO

I could be wrong but the cities/counties putting these in don't pay a dime. All the money comes from the people who run the red lights and speed, There in lies the problem. The company has to make sure the money is flowing and the maximum # of tickets are written daily.

You would be a good salesman for RedFlex...

What is not reported is that if a camera does not make its "revenue target" the city has to make up the difference. But other than that, you are correct. They aren't put in for free. Cities are finding local drivers are learning quickly which intersections and stretches to avoid leaving the visitors to pick up the slack. With the POI files as good as they are, even that revenue is dropping as an expected source.

I agree!

It is the same thing here in Long Beach where not every approach to the intersection has a stop sign. On a stretch of Boulevard some corners have three-way stops (not 4 way due to one street being a one way) while other intersections on the same Boulevard have two-way stop signs with one of the three direction not having to stop at all. I am told that there are good reasons for this, but to some motorists this becomes confusing. Distracted motorists and those in a rush to go nowhere only make it more dangerous in my observations.

I am not sure about what REAL standards were applied by Nassau County- to chose the most dangerous intersections or those with highest volume and greater likelihood of generating revenue.

I know that on Lido Boulevard it is a bit of both. That roadway has historically been treated like a speedway with many fatalities. They narrowed it from three lanes to two, make a center barrier between both directions, have long posted radar to display driving speed and added strobes to the red lights near the school streets. Now it also will have a red-light camera.

The one on Jerusalem and Old

The one on Jerusalem and Old country road is crazy.....as soon as it turns yellow it almost instantly turns to red so be careful there.

Same old, same old!

Boy am I glad I moved to North Carolina from Suffolk County. I was a life long resident for 56 years and moved to NC in 2004 when I retired from my job. Over the years I watched both Nassau and Suffolk change from a peaceful island to live on to a traffic congestion and overpopulated area. I watched the corrupt politicians both on the local and county level constantly and systematically ruin the residents way of life by overbuilding and over taxing. Now they are using red light cameras to fund their useless and wasteful pet projects. It doesn't suprise me and nothing ever changes for the better there.

Just my two cents.

According to the Nassau County RLC web site, there are 18 cameras active. I think they are all in the file, they have been active for a month now, and I think we got all the updates to Miss POI.

Running Red Lights and Stop Signs

I lived for three and a half decades in Brooklyn, NY. I didn't really see all of the problems with blowing stop signs and driving through solid reds as much as I immediately experienced when I moved to Long Beach, NY (Nassau County) in 2000.
Now I see it all of the time and even if you are already stepping into an intersection (with a baby carriage too) an oncoming car will often not stop at their crossing or will ceremoniously tap the brake without slowing down- causing you to have to step back.

A friend who holds a 30+ year civilian code enforcement (non-moving violation stuff) position with the local Police Department feels that the right-on-red allowances may have contributed to the tendency of some drivers to not make full and complete stops. In Brooklyn there is rarely a right-on-red- and if so is allowed when a sign indicates that it is so.

I've seen some in LI the

I've seen some in LI the past few days. noticed the flash last night while someone turned right on a red.

Failure to come to a full stop?

As I understand it, Right on Red should be fine as long as you came to a complete stop before proceeding.

Two years ago I was driving the course of the NYC Marathon. I am a Senior Official and have clearance to drive my personal after the street closings but ahead of the runners. Course vehicles simply traveled up the course since all other vehicular traffic has been stopped and side streets barricaded. There is no need (or time) to stop for traffic signals- On 1st Avenue (or so) I got hit by a red light camera which reported that I crossed the intersection 23 seconds after the red.

I don't know if there are special sensors or standards for intersections where Right on Red is allowed. In the above situation (where there is no Right on Red in NYC) anyone crossing into the intersection would have obviously been pegged.

You are correct...

You need to come to a full stop before making a right on red, and you should be fine. I read that in Nassau County, in addition to taking photos, the camera will also record video, so it can be determined if you rolled through or not when making your right turn. Quite a few of the first round of Nassau RLC tickets came from people rolling through on a right turn - one woman interviewed in Newsday even admitted it to the reporter, but was still upset she was ticketed!

In NYC, there is at least one intersection I know of that has both an RLC and a "Right on red permitted" sign. If I get a ticket in a couple of weeks, I'll know the system is screwed up, because I waited an extra-long time before making the right.

When they put it at every intersection, the POI file will be useless!

New RLCs Activated

Nassau is activating 5 new RLCs on Monday, 1/4/10. They are listed on the County website, and from driving around today, I see they are also in the latest POI update. Driving down the road, my Nuvi said "Caution, now approaching a red light camera" when I wasn't expecting it to, and sure enough, there was the camera on a pole near the corner!
