Garmin Tread Overland Edition

I ordered a Garmin Tread Overland Edition a week ago. It was delivered a few days ago and I have had the opportunity to play with it a bit.

The reasons I selected this particular model are two fold:

One is that it has the RV/Camper Profile.

The other reason is it it Android based for sideloading apps.

One of the first things I did after opening it up was enter the data for our Jayco RV. I also entered details on our bumper pull Aluma trailer. That part was pretty straight forward and simple.

The past couple of days were the first time I have tried sideloading anything. It is not very straight forward or simple to me. As I have mentioned here in the past, my wife and have an RV and are also off-roaders using both ATVs and a side-by-side UTV. Having a device that will work well for both of those things would be a plus.

One of the first things to select for sideloading is the website to download from. There are dozens of third-party app stores for Android. I tried some that I could not get them work on the Garmin Tread Overland Edition.

The one that I did get to work it Aptoide. Once I had Aptoide installed, I was able to download and install Polaris Ride Command and OnX Offroad.

I already had an account with Polaris Ride Command, but when I tried to log in I was unsuccessful. I also got a message: "No data signal. Some features may not work." I did go outside with it and the native City Navigator and other things worked. I was receiving GNSS signals.

I did get OnX Offroad to download, but when I select the login button, it doesn't bring me anywhere to login.

The Garmin Tread Overland Edition runs on Android 10. Android 10 is considered obsolete. It reached its official "end of life" in March 2023, meaning it no longer receives critical security patches from Google.

At this point, if you need a tablet sized device to run Android apps. go with an Android tablet that has a much newer version of the Android Operating System. And, try to find one with a bright screen of 1000 NITS or more.

.

It could be that Garmin modified the OS code to not allow sideloading. I wonder if these units use strict Android OS code or is it somehow modified by Garmin? I would think the latter to prevent "unauthorized" (for lack of a better term) software from running on it. Unless it is in fact the age of Android version that's preventing it.

Garmin did prevent people from sideloading for a while, but it is back now.
