That's great!

I did get my problem solved with the map updater program not connecting to the server when I tried to update my maps to 2011.20. AS several other people thought, it was not a server issue.

The problem was some old remnants of Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 hanging around on my PC after a Windows upgrade. The tech ran a clean-up tool and then reinstalled Net Framework 3.5 and all is well now.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

And thank you for telling us of the solution. Odd, most other programs that need a newer MS NET Framework either warn you it's needed or even go to the effort of installing it. Garmin's current installer must not be as smart. Or more likely, it's as you say that both 2 and 3.5 were both installed but not perfectly installed or uninstalled.

I did get a warning after

I did get a warning after NET Framework 3.5 had run a "Client Profile" page for a while. Tried installing 4.5 but ended up removing ALL NET Frameworks, running cleanup utilities from MS and reinstalling, 3.5 sp2 first and then the rest (1.1, 2 and 4.5). Nothing to do with Garmin, as I had warning for quite a while when MS Update of NET 3.5 sp2 would not install on this system.

Older system had no issues and both had done fine on 2010.40 and 2011.10 before new Map Installer, found that "Advanced" Button to select PC and it had the Mexico option listed as well.

Both systems went through a couple downloads that stopped after 70-80% and had to start over, expect that Garmin will improve their down-loader package for next time.

JCV file with Europe maps

Juggernaut wrote:

Part of the reason is, I also have Europe maps on my unit. Not sure if that accounts for the whole discrepancy though...

Yeah, that would definitely account for your extremely large JCV file. Navteq's coverage for lane assist and Junction View in Europe is a lot more extensive than in the U.S. For example, if you calculate a route on Navteq's website from Paris to Luxembourg, you have about 12 junction views pop up in a 50 mile radius along a part of the route.

Not updating???

I have a GPSMAP 78s -- the latest Garmin hand held -- that I use for Geocaching. I installed 2011.10 via DVD and, when I went to mygarmin, it said I had a free update to 2011.20.

The GPS was connected and I initiated the download. The Advanced button was grayed out so I couldn't load the update to mapsource. When the update to the GPS was finished I rebooted the GPS and checked the map version. It still said 2011.10. Hmmmmmm........

I did the update again with the same result. Any idea what the problem is?

We have a new library. I will check it out.
Thanks.

Get a Stand alone update

Solution for you is NOT TO DEPEND on Internet. Get stand alone 2011.20 update, install it into MapSource and update all your GPSRs at your leisure.
I HATE Internet updates! I hate big companies who treat clients as morons. 'Plug it, press button, and we will do everything else. You just pay, pay, pay'.

How to do it? Check my posts on this and other boards.

Thanks

You are right. I should just buy a one time cd for my 750. My map is from November 2007 and I have done ok with it. If I buy a one time now maybe in 2 or 3 years I will do another one.
Thanks

Edit:
I just checked and the cheapest cd I can get is $52 and it is from May 12, 2009 on Amazon. Looks like to get the most update one I would have to go to Garmin and pay almost what I would for a lifetime. Can't make myself pay $52 for this when I could pay $79 for lifetime. Guess I will just wait (for what I don't know)

.

I'm not sure why people have an aversion to getting the lifetime maps, or even updating them. I just checked Rand-McNalley's new 2011 maps online, and the street I live on isn't there either! So paper maps aren't any better than the GPS, except in the event of a failure.

So, dive in people; the water's just fine... razz

True. Although the discussion is lively and varied for whether or not to buy lifetime map updates (vs. buying a new GPS every few years with its new map, battery, features), almost everyone agrees that a numaps OneTime map update is not worth the price--at least for almost all users. Either live with an old map on the GPS you have now which gets older and more outdated each quarter--or pay a bit more than for the OneTime update and buy a numaps Lifetime for the unit.

No way to download

I am stuck with no way to download the update. It would take too long at McDonald's or the Library on my old laptop. I thought I could go and download it but my husband said the laptop I have is so old it would probably take several hours. My ISP limits me with 5G and I always use 3 or more G per month. I have been looking at the 4G unlimited but there are non offered in my area. Hopefully the 4G won't take too much longer to get here then I will have no problems.
Thanks.

.

You may be surprised how fast an older laptop will download. Most of the time, the speed is limited by the sending server, not the computer.

A library should have a good backbone speed!

Take your computer to the library and go here: http://www.speedtest.net/

It'll tell you what your speeds are.

Advanced > Install Options

alandb wrote:

... But with the new Garmin install method, wouldn't you have to go through the entire install process, picking the "Advanced" option and install to computer only ... then use updater to install to the nuvi? Not sure why you would do it this way tho.

I ran an update yesterday and the "Advanced" button is now labeled "Install Options"

Excellent

Great news. "Install options" makes more sense than "Advanced" and will attract more folks to click it to see what they need to do to update their computer as well as the GPS.

Maybe we have some Garmin engineers who lurk here and see all the grief "Advanced" has caused--and had the power to change things back at the factory...

[Edit] Yowser, I just received this email from a secret member here. Maybe we do have some great lurkers. Thanks, secret member!

CraigW-

You (and others) had mentioned a while back that it would be nice if you didn't have to redownload the map update files for both of your devices. I wanted to let you know that this is now an option. If you click the "Advanced" (now called "Install Options") button, there will be a checkbox to leave the temporary download files used to build the map image.

Please note that you must check this each and every time you run the software or it will clean up after itself. The map files are saved to the %temp% directory so Garmin is obliged to clean up unless the user chooses to leave them.

glad to see this update is

just did it

2011.20 was released today!

I just updated the first time with my new lifetime card.

Back to buying maybe a onetime map

Went to our new local Library today. Took my laptop. Updated one of my programs that needed updated to see how it worked. It needed to download 84 mg. After 20 minutes only 11 mg had downloaded and then I was knocked off the update.
Looks like the best for me will be a one time update or wait till 4g comes to my area, if ever.

Wonder was the difference from the last map update.

Hopefully that will help. If it weren't for this sight, I would have missed the Advanced button.

The new map install sure is quick...

Thanks for the heads up...

I have never seen the Advance Button when downloading the new maps.

The Advanced Option has only been part of the City Navigator NA NT update procedure since May 25, 2010. Earlier updates used a different procedure.

What is the new version Mapsource update. Mine still shows 6.16.2, I have a GPS 855.

Check my 10:22 AM post wink :
"Mapsource was not updated. It remains at v6.16.2."

Mine remained at 6.16.2 also, It must be the moost current version.

New update

I just purchased the one time update from Garmin, I got the DVD so I didn't have to download off the web. I got the one time because I don't know how long I will keep the GPS I have. You can't transfer the life time maps. They sent it in 4 days and it took me about 1hr 45min to install it. (A lot faster than a download)

Not showing up for 600 series

Map update is not showing up for the 600 series of Nuvi

More Options

MG,

Here are a couple potential options:
1. Use one of the library computers and download the file to a USB memory stick or chip.
2. Use a neighbor's bandwidth. There must be someone you know with cable or other broadband Internet connection.

Cheers wink
