Don't know if this is specifically related to my nuvi (1690) or if this is true for all nuvis.

Why is the new TZ map not part of the map upgrade?

I would not have known to do this had I not seen a tip over at GPSPassion forums about it.

Had to reload Time Zone update on my Nuvi 250 as well

What a difference cable

What a difference cable makes! It use to take me 6 hours to download via Verizon DSL, took 9 min on Comcast cable!

Why are the maps labeled 2011? Are they predicting what the roads will look like next year? laugh out loud

Not so happy

I'm not as keen on the new updating scheme as many others seem to be. I don't have the fastest connection at home, so I've been downloading the files at work then copying to memory stick then do the installation at home. With the new scheme I apparently need to do the entire installation at work, and there is no easily accessible backup file for me to keep. I do use mapsource from time to time, it appears that I have to download at home if I want to have the same capability that I had before. And, if I upgrade my computer, add a new hardrive, etc.. then I have to download again.
This does not seem like an improvement.

???

Can someone tell me where the file(2010.20) is DL on my computer? it's not in the same file as the other updates,i like keeping them for a wile in case i have to re DL them.

If you read through this thread (and others), you will see that the update process has changed.

The file is not saved to your computer anymore.

You can't save them for later. You would have to re-download.

...one year?

I dunno about a one-year DL window...even though it states a one-year DL window, Garmin has made numerous errors on myGarmin regarding maps with even the version numbers being incorrect. Time will tell if the one-year DL window is valid or just a typo.

When your Garmin PND runs out of space.

mkahn wrote:

For the c530, there is not enough room to load the complete set, so several options are offered. For example, I can load the West which loads most of the states and Canada, minus the southern and part of the North East. My question is: If I choose to download to my GPS and to my PC, will I get only the West on my PC? I ran the process twice, choosing to load everything to my computer and then again to load the West to m c530.

This is when you need Garmin's MapSource, Google for how to get it, then Register and update it on Garmin WebSite.

Now you can have the entire North America coverage on your PC (not available for MAC) and just select MapSets to cover areas you want to use and download that coverage to your C530 (or most other Garmin Portables).

Some states are covered by one MapSet, others have many, entire country of Mexico is nine MapSets (92MB).

Mine came with my GPS V that had 19 MB internal and its MapSets covered about one county each, five or six county's filled it up, when you install the next group of MapSets, it deletes the previous.

Look for Custom Install to save a copy on your PC

It's said to be on lower left corner of one of the first screens when you go to Garmin for your nuMap update.

Think you need MapSource and I would install (and update) it first, but it may come with the option to "Install on my PC", you have a year to figure it out.

Mexico Included in 2011.20

When I did the free update on a new 295W, 2011.20 did not give me Mexico, and in fact Mexico was not in the list of loadable regions. This weekend, I finally got around to updating a 1490T that previously did not have 2011.10 Mexico, but the 2011.20 update gave it Mexico! I had previously cleared out a bunch Voice files to make room in internal memory, so I assume the updater does indeed check for available free space and adjust the region selection list accordingly?

Update was easy with no problems

Update was easy with no problems. Very nice.

2011.20 released

Can someone confirm all missing POI updated in this release.

2011.2 and my 765T

Downloaded the update Sunday morning. It took less than an hour to get the GPS and Mapsource updated. However, I experienced something weird with my 765T after the update was completed. The GPS froze (ie- the screen locked up, which has happened before). I was able to shut it off by holding the power switch all the way to the left for about a minute. That's happened a few times before, so it really didn't concern me. However, I was not able to power it back on after that. I tried putting it in the car with no success and then reattached it to the computer; still no success. I must have tried the power switch a dozen times. I finally gave up and was in the process of trying to contact Garmin, when I barely pushed the power switch and it booted back up immediately. I have no idea what happened. This is a first for this unit. It seems to be fine now.

Huh?

Mexico maps and the free update.

akapauan

I just purchased a Nuvi 295W last week from Amazon. I tried to load the Mexico map after the North American Region free update. It said 'Maps not Unlocked". So I called Garmin and was told that the "FREE" map update only includes the regions that came on the unit at time of purchase. If at a later time I would buy a map update it would then include the Mexico maps.

Mexico maps

My 1690 came with only the US and Canada depicted on the box. I honestly don't know if Mexico was on the original maps or on 2011.10 as I updated the maps as soon as I got it. I never checked to see if Mexico was on there, but think I remember just seeing US and CA on 2011.10.

Map update 2011.20 included Mexico when I updated. I have LTU, if that makes a difference (bought separately).

Life time update gives you Mexico map even if your unit didn't come preloaded with it.

2011.20

How abou tthe 2011.20 EUROPE maps ?

Are they out yet with the N.American Maps ?

I have a Nuvi775t pre-loaded with NA and EU map sand would like to get both for it.

in MyGarmin, it gives me no info about any new maps available.

Same with my 885t, no new map update shown, but maybe they aren't out yet for the 775t and the 885t.

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

A few general statistics

The download on a regular high-speed connection for all of North America took 38 minutes, 6 minutes to prepare the download and 45 minutes to install on unit & computer for a grand total of 89 minutes.

I then went on WebUpdater and downloaded the time zone update and then proceeded to do a hard reset. The entire procedure went very smoothly and tomorrow I'll give it a good road test wink

Thanks, it makes sense now. It wasn't the remaining memory that mattered. The first time I updated I used the free one-time. The 2nd time (2011.2) was on a purchased Lifetime subscription. So, that's why Mexico was loaded the 2nd time.

.

Yes, that's the way they do it. I guess you have to prove your 'loyalty'. LOL!

like this update

This update seems to have fixed a problem that I was having with slow map redraw on my 1690. Now the maps are keeping up with my location.

Installed no problem

Plugged in the 750 before going to bed and the next morning it was good to go with the update. Don't know how long it took.

Nuvi 750

Finally done…

Well, I had fun updating my nuvi to NA 2011.20.

First download somehow missed parts of Canada and central USA. I have to assume that download was corrupted… I exchanged few e-mails with a member of this board asking for advice and he was extremely helpful and supportive. You now who you are – Thank you (he might be shy so I will not mention his name).

I exchanged few e-mails with Garmin and they were not helpful at all, most likely followed scrip, looking for key words and providing default answer(s).

After few wasted hours and few Gigabytes of download (to PC, to PC and unit, to unit) I decided to start from scratch; this time using IE instead of Firefox. I am not saying Firefox messed up; maybe Garmin did something to download on account…
Download to PC was successful, files saved for latter reference and surprise, surprise the whole map I am eligible for upgrade was here!!! Please be aware that if you are upgrading using free-60_days-new_unit scheme you are eligible for ONLY what is on your nuvi; no more only less if you choose. Since my unit came with NA 2010.30 pre-installed I got unlock code for Canada & USA but not Mexico. Paid customers with lifetime upgrade might have different experience and Garmin might let them have All 3 regions from NA 2011.20 upgrade.

Somebody asked what is the point saving installation files when upgrade is always there – at Garmin’s site.
My point is that I do not want to be dependent on Internet; I do not want every time I need something done on my PC to ‘go on Internet’. Because Internet might be down; provider might be down, my phone line/cable might be chewed by rats, etc.

Current Garmin’s upgrade scheme is what I call ‘for dummies’. Do not be offended but Garmin and other big companies do want to consider you as dummy and to make you dependent on them all the time. That is why you will not be able to get hold of ‘installation’ files and you have to have knowledge and skills to get your hands on them by yourself. Using saved installation files I successfully upgraded my netbook and laptop without need to download gigabytes and gigabytes of data. And of course my nuvi’s map is manually upgraded.

Hmm

I wonder if my C340 is going to have enough room for this one? I hope there's an option for not installing Mexico since I'm unlikely to be driving there.

There Are Options

Go slow and read carefully. There are options for what maps, or portions of maps to install. You can do all of North America, the US & Canada, the US only, etc.

Loading choices

I have a c530 and all of the maps for the US will not fit. I am given several choices for the portions of the US and Canada I want to load. Then, I use Mapsource to choose the remaining locations and load them onto the SD card (including Mexico). In that way, I have the entire set available.

Choose the Advanced option

gardibolt wrote:

After downloading and running the small Downloader file, the process starts. On one of the early windows, look to the lower left corner for an Advanced button. Click the Advanced button and you'll be at a window with several options.

One option is to decide where the update will be applied: to GPS only, to GPS and computer, to computer only.

Another option is to tell the computer where to put the map on the hard drive.

But for your concern, look to the option of what to install: All of North America, US and Canada, US only, etc., etc., etc. Choose the biggest option available to you that covers the areas of interest to you.

Good luck.

Thank You for the info, I

Thank You for the info, I have been messing around with my Navigation System on my new Toyota and let my Garmin, which is so much better be put aside which I will never do again.. I definitely trust my Garmin over Toyota's navigation system

Upating a Garminfone

Garmin told me they aren't supporting a map update yet.

That said, if you can buy the update license and get a key for the Garminfone, you would put that key into a text file called gmapprom.unl and copy that file and the gmapprom.img (new 2011.20 version) to the .sys directory on the phone. Power the phone off and back on and you have a new map! You can create your own new version of the map by loading the map source software and selecting all the regions and then send them to an sd card. If you add the license key from Garmin to the manager section in the software, the file that gets copied to the SD card will have the key in it and you won't need the gmapprom.unl file.

I have already tired this unlocked topographic maps and I can see them on the phone.

Not much has changed on this update. A street in my area that has been built for four years and has been in Google Maps for three still isn't in the update. I even notified Navteq about the change a couple of years ago.

changes???

Does any of you see improvement in these map updates? I have seen none so far in my areas in the last 4 updates....

Surprising that the update is not showing up for your 885T. I had no issues with my 855, so 885T is very similar only with the addition of bluetooth.
