Marketing. It just sounds newer than 2010 would.

It's the same principle as selling gas at $2.569 rather than $2.60; the one sounds cheaper than the other.

Using Saved Installation Files

A little more detail how you accomplished that would save others here a lot of time and bandwidth. Care to share?

HagaWaga wrote:

That is why you will not be able to get hold of ‘installation’ files and you have to have knowledge and skills to get your hands on them by yourself. Using saved installation files I successfully upgraded my netbook and laptop without need to download gigabytes and gigabytes of data. And of course my nuvi’s map is manually upgraded.

thought comes to mind

I have a Nuvi775t pre-loaded with NA and EU map sand would like to get both for it.

in MyGarmin, it gives me no info about any new maps available.

Same with my 885t, no new map update shown, but maybe they aren't out yet for the 775t and the 885t.

Surprising that the update is not showing up for your 885T. I had no issues with my 855, so 885T is very similar only with the addition of bluetooth.

You might want to try again using the following link:
https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myGarminHome.faces

You won't necessarily be told of new maps being available unless you have a subscription.

How to save upgrade files

This is not a secret and I actually picket it up or this or another board.

When you run Garmin’s update app, it downloads all map components to \temp\ folder. Temp folder might be located at different place on your PC so I do not want to provide exact path and than argue with others (you were wrong, no I was not…). The Best way to find exact location is to start download and using Windows explores search all drives for files created/modified at this exact date. Using even more powerful Windows Explorer like Directory Opus you can specify time of file creation/modification to narrow your search. Search will find bunch of files and files of interest are in \temp\ folder under IMG subfolder and you will recognize them easily (City Navigator…).

To grab them correctly, select upgrade of ‘unit’ or ‘unit and PC’ since it will take more time to create image then just to upgrade PC and you will have more time to copy.
WHEN second (of 3) stage of upgrade starts, meaning download is complete, copy all files from IMG folder to another location. Be sure to grab .msi and .cab files. When copying is done you got yourself stand alone NA 2011.20 upgrade. You can even stop Garmin’s upgrade utility and do upgrade at more convenient time for you. Copy saved files to USB/CD and upgrade maps on another PC(s) or just have them as backup as I do. Write down unlock code provided by Garmin in case you have to reformat HD. Do not share unlock code ‘with friends’ since it will be useless for them. Be aware that this is a MAP UPGRADE. It will NOT install MapSource nor update MapSource per se. It is assumed you own legal copy of MapSource.

Is it actually legal to have multiple copies of the same upgrade on different PCs you own is another issue. In my mind as long as YOU use ONE copy at the time it is legal.

Map Update

Thanks for the info!

wow :)

Well 2 gig file in 9 min would require you to have around 35Mega Bits per second sustained download connection.

While your original 6 hours was under 1 meg.

and with those figures, it actually is cheaper

By a tad over .03 cents a gallon smile I think you meant to type $2.599 vs $2.60.

For my nuvi 855 (JV and LA, but no 3D) with all of North America, my jcv file is 48,086KB in size.

Wonder if its worth it -- how much can really change on a quarterly basis? And i really wish they'd use the current year when they release maps. 2011 is so misleading especially when it becomes past tense (say, in 2012).

That's exactly the same file for me on a 765t.... I assumed all JCV files were the same, just wondering why Juggernaught's file was three times the size. Maybe a different GPS, with more stuff in the JCV?

Updating Now

Hello... I don't like updating my maps just before I go on vacation but let's hope everything works. Is there a link on Garmin's site that tells you what added new features there are. I love the life time updates that I bought for my unit.

Its been a long time since I have been on here and I'm glad they didn't delete me grin

MickeyMouse00 wrote:

This is a new map file, so if by "features" you mean a list of what road changes or built-in POI changes were made since the last map release, then the answer is "no." I would think that it would be almost impossible to create such a list and if they did, I imagine it would be HUGE!

If you're talking about the maps, no. There has never been any type of changelog for map corrections. It would be unfeasible to even try to attempt releasing anything like this due to the immense amount of data involved.

I have a c530 and all of the maps for the US will not fit. I am given several choices for the portions of the US and Canada I want to load. Then, I use Mapsource to choose the remaining locations and load them onto the SD card (including Mexico). In that way, I have the entire set available.

As it turned out, the only thing that installed was US and Canada. No option for Mexico at all. They both fit fine onto my C340, though. I don't put any mp3s or other extraneous junk on my GPS.

connection to server error

I am trying to update to 2011.20 maps but when I run the Garmin map updater exe I keep getting an error that a connection to the server could not be established. i do have a valid connection (high speed).

Could it just be the server is busy or another problem?

I doubt it's the server

Given that you're experiencing this more than once, I doubt it's Garmin's server. You do have your GPS connected to your computer when trying the update, right?

Since you're as far as you get before the failure, I assume you have installed Garmin Communicator as an add-on to your web browser.

So my questions to you are: PC or Mac, what operating system, what browser, what antivirus, firewall, internet security suite, etc. since these answers from you may direct us to offering a solution.

Another thought: If running MS Vista or Windows 7, there's always the chance that there's a UAC warning window hidden underneath the update window and it's asking for approval before proceeding.

answers

Communicator plugin is installed and I have down loaded the Garmin map updater. I am running Windows XP Pro and using Norton Internet Security. I have tried with the Norton both enabled and disabled. I have 2 PCs and both are having the same problem. I have tried using both Firefox and IE8. No difference

The problem is occurring when I run the Garmin map updater from the 3.1 mg file down loaded when I started the process. The file extracts,I see the Garmin logo for just a second and then get the error. that a connection to the server could not be established and to please be sure I have a connection to the Internet and try again.

Garmin map updater.exe.

I have never installed with updater.exe, I always use the web based install dialog. But with the new Garmin install method, wouldn't you have to go through the entire install process, picking the "Advanced" option and install to computer only ... then use updater to install to the nuvi? Not sure why you would do it this way tho.

I am just following the screens

Screen says Computer ready for download
Then: Device ready for download
Then: Ready to download the Garmin Map Update Application
Then I click the download button and it downloads the map updater file, which is 3.1 mg.

When I execute this file it does a file extraction and then I see the Garmin logo for a second and then the error that cannot connect to server.

I called Best Buy Geek Squad and they said they have been having problems all week connecting to the server, so maybe it IS a Garmin problem.

I may try during off hours or just wait until Monday and touch base with Support.

I saw the same for my

I saw the same for my Garmin. I had to go further into the site to find it

Ok.

Understand where you are coming from now. I hope you get it figured out, but I have to agree with CraigW that since you have tried multiple times, it is unlikely that it is a problem with the servers.

One thing you might try is to turn off your virus and firewall software during the update.

Thanks

I have tried with the firewall and AV off but did not seem to matter.

I will try during an off time or wait for tech support.

Have never had any trouble updating other things, though (just updated Firefox today)

Since the Best Buy tech guy I talked to said they were having trouble connecting to the server for Garmin maps, I am hoping it is really a server issue.

If I do get it resolved I will post back in case others start to have the same problems.

Try with different browser

@royalty,

Try with Google Chrome. I seem to have observed the same issue with Firefox.

Map Update

Hi, everyone,

I purchased my "Lifetime" upgrade in June, 2009, and to date have upgraded 6 times. I do not, however, get the e-mail notifications of available updates like I thought I would. I sign up for them each time, but I never get it. Anyone else had the same problem?

Yes

Yes, this is a well-known issue. Forget waiting for emails from Garmin--just monitor the Garmin forum here at POI Factory and you'll know of a new map update the first day it's available.

Even better, if there's a delay with some nuvi models of a map update (this has happened at least twice now with the two 2011 map versions), you'll hear which units will have a delayed update.

I'm sure you can get various thoughts on this, but given the age of your old map and the lack of real issues with the 2011.20 update, I say go for it. My 750 (and 855) both updated perfectly well.

I will suggest that you update now. I wouldn't suggest holding off on the update until the last couple of days before the trip starts...

Thanks

StreetPilot 2720 - 2011.20 Doesn't Work

Hello.. I updated my maps on my Street Pilot 2720 with the Life Time updates 2011.20. Evidently the update didn't work as the routes were all messed up when I took my short vacation on Friday. When I was driving I shut the device off thinking it would help. When I turned the device back on all my maps & poi's were gone.

I got home today 8-8-10 and reinstalled the same maps again and it still didn't work. I decided to try again but this time it said the maps were done but on the gps it said still updating. I waited about 20 minutes and no go. I will try one more time and then wait until tomorrow when Garmin is there. I never had a problem installing map updates before. Anyone have any suggestions.

Update: I have tried about 3 times now and it doesn't update my maps. I hope Garmin has a solution were it doesnt cost me any money. The GPS worked fine before I failed at my attempt to install 2011.20. Even when the program says the update is finished my GPS still has the blue screen /white lettering that says Transferring Data. It doesnt matter how long you wait it doesnt change.

I am not sure the update will work now as the unit says I have no maps on it. Any Suggestions. Im tired and going to bed.

You won't necessarily be told of new maps being available unless you have a subscription.

I have 4 Lifetime Subscriptions for my devices and have only received an email notice ONCE in all the years.

Even more upsetting is the fact that once signed into "mygarmin" only ONE of my devices indicated there was a map update available.

I have tried the WebUpdater as well as the "MyDashboard".

2011.10 Worked

Hello they must of changed this version of the software as 2011.20 doesnt work with my GPS. 2011.10 worked fine. Garmin was the person that sold me the lifetime updates. When I bought them they were $120 dollars back in 2008 I believe.

I will be on the phone as soon as they open. Thanks for the help.

problem solved

I did get my problem solved with the map updater program not connecting to the server when I tried to update my maps to 2011.20. AS several other people thought, it was not a server issue.

The problem was some old remnants of Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 hanging around on my PC after a Windows upgrade. The tech ran a clean-up tool and then reinstalled Net Framework 3.5 and all is well now.

Thanks to all who tried to help.
