Thanks

for the heads up.

Nice addition

On the way in to my small city today, I noticed the maps have changed insofar as the bridge I have to cross over is showing as divided lanes. Same as the highway through town. Each now shows a separate track, and the 'road' is widened on the screen.

Subtle change, but noticeable!

I'm not at all happy with the new map updater...
Having to leave computer on for hours is a drag and a bore.... with the Garmin connected the whole time...

I really liked the way it used to be....
Download at your leisure....
Update at your leisure.....

Now, with their software saying, and I quote:

"Note that this process can take several hours"

Another inconsiderate move.... Why did it need to change?

And the Activation code.... It happened in the background before.... Now it's "In your face!"

@Jan

As I stated earlier, the whole process, start to finish was 89 minutes. And, that was at 6PM PT. The servers were very busy. I think the later in the day you update, the more the whole world knows, and is DL'ing it.

Hang in there, bro!

Expire date

What's the deal that the new map download expires the same day it's downloaded for the first time? We used to get 60 days to re download if something happened. Today I see it expires July 29, the same day I downloaded it.

EDIT I guess I need to read more carefully, it actually gives us a year to redownload. I failed to see it said 2011 not 2010.

I don't know if you've found your answer yet. I misread your question. The file will be in your download folder and is called "garminmapupdater_naeu_g.dmg". It will still take a long time to install and goes back to garmin. The initial download doesn't appear to have the whole file. This is all you get unlike in the past. I've seen several software downloads done this way recently.

Just finished updating 885t. Took 48 minutes. Much less time than the update to 2011.10.

New Download Process With 2 PCs!?!

With the new download process, how do you get the updated maps and MapSource (with any updates) installed on a 2nd PC?

I used to start with my desktop PC, connect the Nuvi and run the downloaded file which would install MapSource with any updates and the new maps first on the PC, then the maps on to the Nuvi.

Next I would connect the Nuvi to my laptop, run the downloaded file from there where it would install MapSource with any updates and the new maps on the PC. While it was doing that, I would disconnect the Nuvi (which already had the new maps installed from the desktop PC) and wait for the error message that it couldn't find the Nuvi and click cancel.

That gave me the current version of MapSource and the new maps on both PCs.

Once again, your reply is appreciated. Again, however, that's not quite what I am looking for. That file you just described is the .dmg file for the MapUpdater software itself- not the actual downloaded map that MapUpdater downloads to your system.

For whatever it's worth, the file from the 2011.10 map is called garmin_rmu_cnnant2011_10.dmg... I am looking for the latest version of this file.

No such similar file exists for 2011.20.

I would say that's because of the file DL format. An anti-piracy move on Garmin's part.

They are actually even faster than that if you provide them with documentation or photos. Unfortunately, Garmin (and other end units) don't use the updated info as rapidly as it is updated. It is just nice to see that they finally updated several interstate changes on the east coast, i.e. 95/195 in Providence along with 95/695 and 95/895 in Baltimore.

I will give credit where it is due...
The new program downloads the map faster....

I can't tell you about the install portion, though (I believe the USBV1 in the Nuvi 660 is the limiting thing) 'Cause the wife & I went for a motorcycle ride, and when we came back, it was done....

Still won't find Rush, Arkansas though!!

you're right

Jeff:

That's the point, they are giving us garminmapupdater_naeu_g.dmg instead which forces us back to their website for more downloading. Apple is doing much the same with their downloads. I suppose it helps prevent piracy. Why not just transfer the map itself between computers and open it in RoadTrip at which time it will send you to a page to activate it on the second computer. Works like a charm and can't be against the rules "cause the rules only apply to one GPS. I'm sure many like myself use RoadTrip on both a desktop and a laptop.

2011.20 and 4.00 software are playing nicely

After completing 436 miles today, I can confirm that the new map (2011.20) didn’t give me any problems. As for the Junction View and Lane Assist, it’s too early to tell if is has been improved as I need more traveling time with this new map.

preview first

I was thinking bout updating my maps till I checked out the preview, newer areas here in Grande Prairie are still not on the new maps sad guess I'll have to wait a little longer.

Huh?

If you have lifetime maps, what's to wait for? You'll have the latest. If you have a one time upgrade, it'll expire before the next map comes out.

The Waiting Game

davester1 wrote:

The previous poster is correct - you might as well update now.

If you just bought your GPS and have one free update, the free period will likely expire before another update is released. Your free download period starts from the first day you activated - NOT when you registered with Garmin. So you have likely lost a month already! If you have a lifetime subscription for updates, why not get the update?

And remember, the update isn't solely about new stuff around your home - you already know where that is! It's about the new stuff in "other areas" that you are going to visit. That's the adventure that the GPS lends itself to! wink

Differences from the prior version

I just checked to see why there are a few additional maps. It seems that they have removed Providence from southern New England and made it separate. They also separated a few small areas of British Columbia.
Also, in nearly all maps, the file size is bigger.

Like many others, I didn't notice the ADVANCED box and had to go back in order to get Mapsource updated.

I use powerline ethernet

I use powerline ethernet bridges and the new update does like them at all. Had to use a hardwire connection from router to computer. Was on hold for an hour and all the guy could tell me is that they are still tweaking the update procedure. Still tweaking? This should have been tested before the update. Don't like the new way at all. Before you could download maps once and then updated multiple units with one download.

Thanks for the heads up!

Downloading now, seems to be downloading faster than normal.

Let's see, I still have the "old method" downloaded file from the 2010.11 update. Maybe I'll run it on my new laptop to get MapSource installed initially with those maps before I get this latest map update using the "new-and-improved" download process. confused

Thanks for the info, Box Car!

Should have checked here 1st

Greetings to All;

In my haste I should have checked here first before updating my units. When installing map update first on the Nuvi 255, I had clicked on the 'advance tab' however went brain dead in my reading and didn't include 'Map Source'...me dummy. Presently it is down loading for the Nuvi 1350 and while it is doing so I came here to visit and learned about my goof.
I was surprised to read so many post about how fast the download/install had been for so many. The prior method of downloading and installing was far faster, for me, than this new way. However it might be faster as I am updating the 1350 presently. I have 10 megs service but when using Firefox my checks vary anywhere from 50 to mid 80 meg download speed. I too did not have any problems with my first install...yippee. I will have to figure out what to do about 'Map Source' after all is complete.
I have learned my lesson and shall check here first before doing updates.
Oh, an update about my prior mistake sometime back when I tried to install my map update using "Google Chrome'. I had to send my unit in for a master reset. I must compliment all of Garmin's employee's for their excellent support. I was also very pleased about how quickly it was returned to me. If I recall correctly it was in about one week total from the day it left the house.
May everyone's day be better than your yesterday; Mine is already for I woke up to enjoy another beautiful day and said a prayer that things will be a tad better for all that are dealing with these difficult times...including our present living family tree.

I agree with you that it probably wasn't the sharpest pencil in the box that implemented the scheme. It's no real problem if you are sitting there at the main office and testing the procedure over the LAN. It becomes a real pain when it has to go out "in the wild" and put in the hands of real users that don't have that 100MB pipe into the server that's just down the hall.

Something else just dawned on me - another question. I log into MyGarmin from my first PC with the Nuvi attached and download & install the map update to both that PC & the Nuvi (I assume with any program updates to MapSource).

Then I move the Nuvi to my laptop and login again to MyGarmin. Isn't MyGarmin going to know that I just downloaded the update and stop me there? Does it really allow me to download the same update twice?

Just purchased my first GPS, which I will be registering tonight (acquired sat. Wed).

My question are:

I'd like to hold off using the one time map update, but would like to download Mapsource. Is this possible and how is it done?

How often are maps updated? 60 days is about the end of Sept. so I'm wondering if another update or correction to this release, would be available by then.

Thank you to anyone willing to help out a newbie.

You can download the same update as many times as you want - as long as the GPS is connected the entire time and the window hasn't expired.

How often are maps updated? 60 days is about the end of Sept. so I'm wondering if another update or correction to this release, would be available by then.

1) You can install Mapsource by using this technique:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsour...

Note that this will just install the Mapsource program with its very limited basemap. To be really useful, you may want City Navigator installed into Mapsource, but that will require you to use your free onetime update to the latest map.

2) No guarantees as to future updates, but over the past year or more, updates have become available roughly every 90 days.

3) Since the next map is most likely due out in 90 days and you have until the end of September to use your free update before it expires, ignore the method suggested in "1)" above, and just do the OneTime update to 2011.20 now.

4) If you missed it, note that the default installation of map updates is to "GPS only." If you want Mapsource and the new map on your computer as well as on your GPS, you must select the "Advanced" mode during the update--look for an Advanced button in the lower left of one of the early update windows before the download actually starts--then after choosing Advanced, change from "GPS only" to "GPS and computer." You also have the option in "Advanced" mode to choose where Mapsource will store the map on your hard drive and can select the portion of North America you want. For sure, choose the largest map--all of North America if that's offered.

Good luck. You may also want to read the threads on the new update procedure before you start:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29239

Well, OK Then

I also noticed in another thread it is important to have Admin rights to the computer your downloading on.

I'm very glad I stumbled onto this site. I have already found the answers to a number of question I had, addressed.

If I download 'to PC', is it

If I download 'to PC', is it possible to grab installation file (.exe or whatever they package it into) and save it for future references?
What if I change hard drive, OS, PC in a few months? I will not be able to download it again since my 60 days will be long gone.

In case it is possible then installing it to MapSource will solve problems updating multiple GPSRs and/or reinstalling it in case of PC/OS/HD change.

Where should I look after download completes?

Call Garmin

Garmin has said that "you can call them and they will make a previously downloaded file available to you again, no problem".

After the download is finished it deletes the temp files. I believe mine downloaded into "C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\GARMIN\Map Update

As usual, piracy always inconveniences paying users as companies implement more draconian measures to protect their products. Unfortunately the paying user is not in the thoughts of the companies that do this (mostly everybody nowadays)

A different method is needed. Maybe imprinting the download file with the authorized units from the user downloading it?(I know, more demanding on their servers) This should be automatic for people already registered with Garmin. Also it would allow the file to work only with the registered units as it would have to check for the internal number of the GPS. I know hackers might still get at it, as there is no perfect system, but it would be harder if the number is encrypted in the file somehow and decoded at installation.

My connection is 15 Mbps, but still takes a while and I only have 1 unit. I sympathize with you guys that have more than one and/or a slower connection.

Failed to Install the requsted maps to your computer

Before updating another unit with a lifetime subscription, I started with a one-time update for a Nuvi 295W that's been waiting for the next map to be available. In the advanced screen I asked that the map be installed on both the Unit and on the PC. At the end of the installation, the 295W was updated to 2011.20, however Mapsource was not updated. The message displayed by the updater program was "The program failed to install the requested maps to the computer". I ran the "garminmapupdater_naeu_g.exe" two more times, this time telling it to install to the computer only, and each time I got the same error message. For the 2nd try I even did a fresh reboot of the PC. Before I pursue this further, does anyone know if (in this new process), a one-time update qualifies for the map being installed on the PC?

I'll probably try the lifetime update for the other unit this weekend and see if it succeeds in installing the map to the computer. Or, maybe I can try another computer.

OS?

And if installing to a PC, are you logged in to your computer as an administrator? Some have reported issues when trying to install the update from a non-admin setting.

Also, if Vista or Win7, what are your UAC settings? Sometimes, a UAC warning hides behind an open window.

Any particularly unusual antivirus or firewall running?

The update should work for the GPS and computer regardless of being run from a free update, OneTime update or lifetime update subscription.

Multible Hits Same Location

On the 2011.2 Map Update when you type in for example Walmart, it shows 3 Walmarts in the same location. This can be a problem. Check your system and see if you get the same type of responses.

Thanks for the tips. As long as I know a free update still qualifies under the new system for a copy on the PC, I'll go ahead and troubleshoot this. I was installing on Windows XP with an administrator account. However, the PC was authenticated against an NT Domain, and behind an enterprise firewall and proxy. Considering how many consumer-class software products don't work well behind a proxy, I was surprised that the Garmin updater actually used the system level proxy settings to contact their servers - so at least Garmin got that one part right. I'll try it again at home with a "typical" network connection. Garmin's developers might have tested the case of a proxy environment for the Device update, and not for the PC update.

Downloaded Files

All downloaded files are located in a folder called IMG that is located in your Temp folder. Location of your Temp folder depends on your OS. For Vista and Win7 you have to make sure that your Hidden Files are shown when using Windows Explorer. Open Windows Explorer, go Organize/Folder and Search Options/View/ and check Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives. Then go Local Disk (most likely C:)/Users/User Name (this name depends on how your system was set)/App Data/Local/Temp. If you can't find a folder named IMG in your Temp folder then most likely it was deleted. After installation of the 2011.20 map on my PC & GPS the folder wasn't deleted, so it should be there. If you ran any of "cleaning" software since installation most likely it is gone. Don't get confused with missing of an .exe file in the folder. This folder is extracted version of the previous CNNANT20xx.xx.exe file.

Update went smoothly

Just updated my nüvi 760 and all went smoothly. Hopefully there aren't any weird glitches in this map set.

Edit:
Crap. I wish I'd seen this thread before updating. I saw the Advanced button but it disappeared and I didn't find out what it was for. Apparently I have to try to do the stupid update again to get it on my computer. I wish Garmin would stop "making things better" and just leave things alone as they worked fine before.

I copied mine while installation & transfer was still in progress. Once the installation was done and my computer restarted I checked for folders, but obviously didn't realize Product1 folders were empty. I'm sorry. Obviously if you want the files saved, you have to copy them after downloading is finished, but before the entire process is done. Still better than having to download 2 or more times for those guys that have multiple units.
