Second update

Since I missed the Advanced option the first time the maps were only installed to my nüvi. I started the download again but this time I hit the Advanced button. Since the maps were already on the GPS I selected to ONLY install them on the computer. Hopefully this works properly.

Smooth Installation

I just completed the update installation on my nuvi 660 and everything seems to have gone smoothly. I went with the standard install and the prompt screens were somewhat different than in the past. The whole process seemed to be about one-third faster than in the past... not sure why but I am hoping that is a good thing confused

No change to MapSource

My first download went to the gps. I downloaded again to the computer expecting to update MapSource. But, MapSource remained at Version 6.16.2. Is this the latest? Is downloading to the computer really going to update MapSourse in the future?

jjen

It updates the maps in MapSource, not the program itself. Update it via the program; Help/Check for updates.

Update to this post: All went well and now I have the maps on my computer as well as on the GPS. Excellent!

You will wait...

All those people who say they can't wait for the download, well, you will grin .
It took just under an hour to download the maps then 2 hours to install them onto my 265wt. I don't know if the fact that I was installing it on my computer at the same time made the process longer. Going to give the unit a run this week end to see if I can spot anything different. wink

OK

Thanks. I now see that 2011.2 is being used by the program.

Question on updating c530 and MapSource

For the c530, there is not enough room to load the complete set, so several options are offered. For example, I can load the West which loads most of the states and Canada, minus the southern and part of the North East. My question is: If I choose to download to my GPS and to my PC, will I get only the West on my PC? I ran the process twice, choosing to load everything to my computer and then again to load the West to m c530.

Garmin StreetPilot c530, Mapsource

Update to PC only was successful

I decided to try this update but only to PC. I was able to grab the whole download before it was cleaned out by Garmin's download/install utility. The whole thing has 167 folders and size is 1,827,910,812 bytes. It does include CNNANT2011_20Update.msi which was most likely ran to install it into MapSource after download has completed. Therefore my questions have been answered - now I have update version I can reinstall at any time.

Version 2011.20 is missing Mexico. 2011.10 has it or it was somehow added manually...? Downloading it to PC I did not get junction views nor 3D buildings which are suppose to go to nuvi.

Those who were brave and downloaded it directly to nuvi - did you get new junction views and 3D buildings? My current gmap3d.img is 158,531,584 bytes and JVC is 49,379,968 bytes.

I will ask Garmin where are these 2 files...

.

My JVC file is 149,799,342 bytes, and the gmap3d.img is 327,041,024 bytes.

I did get the 2011.20 Mexico as well.

Wow

Wow, nearly a 3 fold increase in JV file size. Sounds like there will be a lot more of them showing up.

Still Won't Update Map on PC

Before updating another unit with a lifetime subscription... Before I pursue this further, does anyone know if (in this new process), a one-time update qualifies for the map being installed on the PC?

I'll probably try the lifetime update for the other unit this weekend and see if it succeeds in installing the map to the computer. Or, maybe I can try another computer.

What is your OS, Windows 7, by chance?

And if installing to a PC, are you logged in to your computer as an administrator? Some have reported issues when trying to install the update from a non-admin setting.

Also, if Vista or Win7, what are your UAC settings? Sometimes, a UAC warning hides behind an open window.

Any particularly unusual antivirus or firewall running?

The update should work for the GPS and computer regardless of being run from a free update, OneTime update or lifetime update subscription.

Thanks for the tips. As long as I know a free update still qualifies under the new system for a copy on the PC, I'll go ahead and troubleshoot this. I was installing on Windows XP with an administrator account. However, the PC was authenticated against an NT Domain, and behind an enterprise firewall and proxy. Considering how many consumer-class software products don't work well behind a proxy, I was surprised that the Garmin updater actually used the system level proxy settings to contact their servers - so at least Garmin got that one part right. I'll try it again at home with a "typical" network connection. Garmin's developers might have tested the case of a proxy environment for the Device update, and not for the PC update.

I put the same Windows XP PC above on my home network (no proxy needed), and the map still failed to install. I updated Mapsource to the latest, did it again, and it still failed (waiting for the long download each time!). I fired up Mapsource and in the Map Product Manager, there is a new Unlock code installed, with a comment "Region unlock code from 059aca..." but the region field says "Map Product Not Installed." So, I guess the updater got as far as installing the Key, but not the Map. The only other thing I can think of is that this particular PC has several OSM maps installed, and a couple of other non-lockable 3rd-party maps in non-standard folders.

Anyway, I attached the Nuvi, copied and ran the map installer on a Windows 7 laptop, told it to install to the computer only, had dinner while the download was taking place, and when I got back the map was installed on the PC. (This confirms you can re-install the PC map on a different PC)

Back on the previous Windows XP PC, I might just delete the registry entries for the OSM maps and try again. If it works, then I can re-install the OSM maps. If this is the fix, then if I do another Garmin map update, I may have to delete the OSM maps again!

Obscure Bug In 2011.20 Installer and SetupLog.txt

There is an obscure bug in the 2011.20 Map Update Installer, and I'm giving up installing the map on the PC mentioned above. I can live without it. At least it is installed on my secondary PC.

Just in case anyone on this forum wants to see a complete log of their installation, there is a file called SetupLog.txt left over by the installation process in the Application Data folder of Garmin. In Windows XP, this typically would be in

C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Application Data\GARMIN\Map Update

If it is not there, just look in similar folders for the other users. SetupLog.txt contains your Unit ID, Garmin-assigned Product Key, your Unit Unlocks, list of downloaded regions, and if you really want to know how long it took to download the maps - a time-stamped log of when each file downloaded. You might want to save a copy of this file for reference, just because it contains your Keys, and it will get overwritten every time you run the installer.

I'm not going to bore everyone with the error message I found in the file, it's something only a Windows programmer would appreciate, but it does indicate something whoever wrote the installer program did not anticipate.

Downloaded 3 times

Spent a lot of time on the downloading, But some of it my fault. Already had lifetime for my 650 so that one went smooth exept it didnt go to mapsource, mmmmmm went to poi factory and guess what, didnt select the advanced option to do the computer and unit, so did another download for computer only an that fixed the 650 and mapsouce on the laptop, then went the desktop and amazon and got a lifetime for my 1450, got the key etc, went to garmin and downloaded the file and selected the unit and computer and got the mapsource on the desktop and the nuvi. the same amount of time for it all was pretty close, anyway all went well, no hangups, no problems,

Just finished with the DL it still took a few Hr's(did both unit and computer)but no issues whats so ever very smooth,i seen the advance tab right away i love the fact that now you have the choice to DL the regions you want instead of the whole thing it will come in handy once my 350 starts running out of room.

i did just U.S and Canada,,over all very pleased with the method of updating.

one thing tho where on my computer is the new 2010.20 file? i have all the old ones but don't see the new one??

Golden Ears Bridge

Have they added the Golden Ears Bridge yet? It's not on Google Earth yet, it's been collecting tolls since July 2009. Should connect between Langley, BC and Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge BC. Alignment is almost due north of Trans-Canada Hwy 1 and 200st interchange in Langley.

I support the right to keep and arm bears.

Why?

With all this talk of backing up 2011.20, I wonder why bother? You have a year to re-download, instead of a couple of weeks. Even if you change HDD's, that works for me. Besides, there will be a few newer updates in that year to come.

Meh, much adieu about nothing IMO.

2011.20 Installed - Garmin alerts?

Thank for the release notice! I signed up to receive an email alert from Garmin when the update is available, but after getting it one time at the beginning of Dec09, have never received another. Anyone else experienced this? Anyone have any tips to make it work?

Installed the the new map last nite, selecting both computer + device. Device nuvi 760 updated with no problems in about an hour, but computer update failed. Mapsource is not installed, and I was using an XP computer logged in to a non-Admin account. Either or both likely caused the failure, but don't have the time or need to reattempt to resolve.

I have a feeling that when you DL the map, the servers register it, and don't send you the email; there's no need to.

Garmin is probably smarter than we give them credit for. wink

TEMP - correct. But as soon

TEMP - correct. But as soon as it is installed, download utility deletes everything from it and it is not even in recycle bin. Therefore to grab it you have to start downloading it and as soon as download is complete and 'preparing map' starts do copy/paste of IMG folder to another drive. Underneath is the whole thing...

The big question...

Has anyone actually updated a second unit from the files you've copied? If not, the exercise may be a moot point.

Help!

I have a NUVI 350 I have had it for two years, so the maps are original (It says copywrite 2009)
If I get the new update, does it overwrite the original program and if so will it fit on the GPS itself or does it require a SD card? I have a 2Gig card I use for POIs.

The new maps will overwrite the previous one. HOWEVER - each map release is bigger than the last which means the free space gets smaller and smaller. I have been tracking the amount of free space left on my 660 with each update. Here are my free space figures including this latest update:

For the record, this was the amount of free space remaining on my 660 with each of the mapsets I've installed:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB
After 2010.40 update - 365MB
After 2011.10 update - 270MB
After 2011.20 update - 252MB

I did not have to delete any of the "optional" files like voices or vehicles to make this version fit. I installed all of North America which includes Canada and Mexico.

Does the new maps show a bit more data on the screens?

Used 660 with new maps yesterday....
I think there is more data being shown on the maps..
More cross streets, more other data like river names and park names....

Wife thinks it's the same....

What do you think?

time zone map

I had to run WebUpdater again afterward to put in the new time zone map for the latest version.

Don't know if this is specifically related to my nuvi (1690) or if this is true for all nuvis.

Why is the new TZ map not part of the map upgrade?

I would not have known to do this had I not seen a tip over at GPSPassion forums about it.
