1390T lasted 7 Day, 8 hours, and 10 Minutes!

After two 755T, one 765T and now a 1390T, I am convinced that Garmin is making JUNK. It had been working great. I even took a trip to Maine for a long weekend and everything was fine. Tonight, my screen froze on the way home from a short ride. I tried to shut it off and when I did, it started to flash the GARMIN name on the screen. I finally got it to shut down by holding the power button down for about 30 seconds. I tried a Master Reset, no luck, still flashing. I tried to hook it up to my computer and it did not even recognize it. All it did was flashing the name. I waited about one hour to see if the GPS fairy had fixed it. Nope, still flashing. Back to the phone tomorrow morning to Garmin. I think that I should put them on my speed dial. It is funny, that my old 260 that is in my wife’s car, is still working great. Lets see what they will say tomorrow. Oh, I almost forgot their answer: No Problem, Just Send It Back! I am still out $200. And I still do not have a dependable GPS. In 12 week since I got my first 755T, I have had the use of a GPS for 6 weeks, Garmin has had it for the other 6 weeks. I will be asking for my money back!

Regulation

I wonder if you have a bad regulator and are getting spikes or brownouts. I would connect a data logger and check.

One Presumes...

These are stock GPS units? You haven't modded any of the voice files, or removed files or folders? Haven't "made space" etc. Haven't accidently or on purpose renamed anything in mass storage mode?

Nothing other than adding POI files using standard techniques? (Checked your icons and ensured that none are oversized?)

These units have so many features now, it doesn't take much to hang up a program...

You have the worst luck, I wouldn't stand near you in a storm!

I own or have owned a Garmin Streetpilot 550c, Nuvi 885T, Nuvi 855, Nuvi 760 and a Garmin/Kenwood KNA-G610 integrated Nav and never had any of them fail that was not fixed by simply rebooting.

I cannot figure out what is causing you to have so many problem units in a row. I use my units nearly every day and for many 1,000's of miles and they have never failed me.

I have been using a C330 and C550 for quite some time. I have been using the 765T since March. The 765T has its issues due to the buggy firmware but it does work.

Advice

I'd do as onestep suggests. Check for power spikes from your car first. I have a 260W I bought at Costco and beated it like a cheap radio, and it is still ticking. I update POIs, vehicles, voices, etc. very often and no problems so far. I have my unit for a couple of years already. My brother has an older nuvi and no problems either.

No problem with my 1390T

I have 3 Garmin's, well, my son has my 530 for his dump truck and just gave him the 750. Not one problem with any of them. I just load POI's from here and nothing else.

Replaced 255WT

I got my replacement unit 255WT from Garmin last week. The previous unit had hell lots of problem . This is working fine so far. Have to check it out for few more days as you said you got problem after 7 days, 8 hour and 10 mins !!!! grin
Mine is still 7 days only!
Garmin's replacement service was really good. Dont know how long the unit would go on.

re: 1390T lasted 7 Day, 8 hours, and 10 Minutes!

In this household we own four Garmins. One died on a trip 300 miles away, the others are functioning fine, so that gives us an attrition rate of 20 percent. (The store replaced it immediately.) What I have learned is that where you buy... matters. Some stores recirculate returned items as new without refurbishing them.

My first Garmin (a GPS 38) lasted 13 years before it was confiscated crossing the border of a paranoid foreign country.

In my opinion, Garmin is a good company.

Too bad that happened to you.

Maybe paranoid as you said, or just a corrupt border guard trying to get a "free" GPS. I've seen my fill of corrupt "officers" in other countries.

I have six of the little buggers...

a 370, 2 360's, a 350, a 265, and a 765(WT) and have bought a 350 for one daughter and a 360 for the other daughter! A grand total of eight! Wouldn't change to another for all the tea in china!

"Backward, turn backward, oh time in your flight, make me a child again, just for tonight."

Bothersome

It does appear that Garmin is having many more reliability problems with their newer models, and occasionally one person can be very unlucky getting a sequence of bad ones. At least the service from them has remained good for the most part. Hopefully they'll fix the reliability problems and not have their service slip.

My 660's been going well for

My 660's been going well for 2.5 yrs now. The battery won't hold a charge anymore, but since it's always plugged in, that hasn't been enough motivation to upgrade.

1490T

Works great. Had a 650 and 750 prior and no problems..Sounds like you might be better off returning to paper maps...

Costco

Just curious, you didn't happen to purchase the bum units at Costco, did you?

1490T

Mine has been working with no problems as well.

Which Country?

Yes I have worked around the minor issue of not hooking up every time. When I disable it on the unit and then enable it hooks up fine,so whenever I am through with it I just disable.. I had a manager call me from the software dept and we went through the whole problem and he said a fix would be coming out soon. Other than that the unit is great so far. I only use the GPS when we are out of town so it is no big deal. I use my blue tooth earpiece much more.

I am agree with you. I had 2 replacement of 255WT at BEST BUY.Guess what my friend had to replace his unit too at bestbuy. He bought it from the same deal. And guess what...! Bestbuy is the only authorised store which can sell 225WT. Rest all sells 255W not with traffic receiver. So It might be possible that Bestbuy had a bad lot of 255WT.
So after my 3rd and final replacement with Garmin International it self, the unit is working fine now!

You may...

You may want to take a look at these threads on where to get replacement batteries (some last longer than original) and how to do it yourself (no need to pay A LOT to Garmin to do it).

Try testing the Lighter circuit with a inexpenseive tester

See if you can get an inexpensive car lighter tester like one of these or if Auto parts store will test it free:

http://www.amazon.com/12V-24V-Automotive-Battery-Tester/dp/B...

or

http://www.robobargains.com/p-r2800.html

Maybe the lighter circuit is putting out to much voltage and wasting the units.

I had my 1390T for about a year now have over 50,000 miles on it, in all different cars, and all over the country. In the Ice cold winter in Alaska(-42 without windchill)and the Extream heat of the summer in Texas (+115 in the shade)and Arizona. I moded it out, added other voices, other cars, and deleted most of the files (everything they said I shouldn't do) added POI's and it still working.

350 going strong here,

350 going strong here, anyone?

My 660 is over 3 years old,

My 660 is over 3 years old, and is fine, battery and all....

The only issues I've had were:

Some operational issues... POI Loading issues, Manual interpretation issues. All Fixed here with info from this site!

Had trouble getting traffic to work -- I had hidden the wires such that I shielded them. My fault.

When I got that fixed (Thanks to this site!) had a problem where traffic didn't display correctly (Garmin Problem... Since Fixed by them)

Power plug fell apart (didn't know to tighten tip regularly) Once fixed it's not a problem...

Basically One software bug, and 0perational issues...

205W

I've had my 205W for 1.5 years and the only problem I've had is when it rebooted in the middle of a trip. I WILL buy another a Garmin when I upgrade.

My 1390T died within a week

My 1390T died within a week of use. I was on the road and the voice just became garbled and when I turned it on to let it direct me back home, it just died. It kept flashing white. So, I pointed my car in the right direction (via the car's compass) and hoped I eventually would hit the highway.

I just got my replacement unit....here's hoping for the best!

1390t
