The 2011.20 procedure is the same as the final (nuvi 8xx) procedure started with the late 2011.10 map updates. As you note, it is different than earlier updates including the 2011.10 map for nuvi non-8xx units. For more details than you'd ever want to read, see:
Have finished updating to 2011.2 on Nuvi 260 but not showing update for use with Mapsource. Have to figure that one out but my GPS is all set.
Took about 2 1/2 hours !

Mr. Ken,
As Box Car states, you need to use the Advanced tab during the update to update the GPS and computer's Mapsource maps. Can you run the installion again? If so, choose Advanced, then select Computer only.
While in the Advanced mode, also check to see what maps are being installed. If your nuvi has sufficient room, make sure the map chosen is the full North America and not a smaller subset.
PS--for MrKen only: note that several but not all of the "temporarily closed" rest areas in Arizona have reopened.
Updated the maps in my new 295W in only 53 minutes!
The new map install sure is quick. From the time I went on the Garmin site to the time the new maps were completely installed in both my computer and the 295W was only 53 minutes.
Just a heads up if you want to install the maps into your computer in addition to the GPS you need to watch for the Advanced button in the lower left corner and as I recall it was about the 2nd or 3rd screen during the install process. Gives you the option to install just in the GPS, GPS and computer or just the computer.

I say "I think so" because older versions of Mapsource will be updated during the map update when both "GPS and computer" updates are selected.

It still seems odd to me that the default map update is GPS-only and not GPS and Mapsource. Bad Garmin.
It appears to me that Garmin is moving towards using Basecamp in favor of Mapsource for the PC/Mac mapping application. This theory was confirmed by Garmin according to the gpspassion forum. Basecamp uses the map directly on the Nuvi, so installation to the PC is not required.

The procedure is the same as for the late 2011.10 updates; i.e., a separate download is needed for each GPS updated, as described in an earlier thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29239
The 2011.20 update, both for a GPS update and a computer Mapsource update, worked flawlessly on Win7 (both 32 and 64-bit) computers and to a nuvi 7x0 and nuvi 8x5 GPS.
Mapsource was not updated. It remains at v6.16.2.
With a 10Mbps cable internet connection which I believe is slightly faster than the "normal" DSL and cable broadband speeds, the download portion of the update took me 40 and 31 minutes respectively for my two updates. This includes a GPS update and a Mapsource update, so GPS-only updates should take less time. So I imagine that the download portion of the update should take all broadband internet users less than an hour to complete.
The total time from connecting to "mygarmin" to completion of the update process took me 53 minutes for my nuvi 855 (with its USB2 interface) and 90 minutes for a nuvi 750 with its USB1.1 showing how much faster maps are installed to the newer nuvi models that use USB2.
A quick check of 2011.20 on Mapsource shows the new map to be working so far (with no map or POI updates seen within a half-mile or so of my home).
I haven't yet done a road test of the new map but that's next.

Before, when the system simply used the Java applet to perform the download, I could specify where the .dmg file with the map would be placed. I like to save my map files for backup purposes.
