Could some of you who have time today download it and see it if everything is ok? I would download it myself but I'm gonna be gone all day and I'm gonna need my GPS today. Thanks!

The 2011.20 procedure is the same as the final (nuvi 8xx) procedure started with the late 2011.10 map updates. As you note, it is different than earlier updates including the 2011.10 map for nuvi non-8xx units. For more details than you'd ever want to read, see:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29239

Note also that the new map is NOT out yet for the nuvi 37xx series:

The 'new' procedure requires you to select if you are updating the maps on the Nuvi or if you want to update Mapsource as well. If it's like last time, it is the 2 gig download to add the maps to MS.

Mr. Ken,

As Box Car states, you need to use the Advanced tab during the update to update the GPS and computer's Mapsource maps. Can you run the installion again? If so, choose Advanced, then select Computer only.

While in the Advanced mode, also check to see what maps are being installed. If your nuvi has sufficient room, make sure the map chosen is the full North America and not a smaller subset.

PS--for MrKen only: note that several but not all of the "temporarily closed" rest areas in Arizona have reopened.

Updated the maps in my new 295W in only 53 minutes!

The new map install sure is quick. From the time I went on the Garmin site to the time the new maps were completely installed in both my computer and the 295W was only 53 minutes. grin

Just a heads up if you want to install the maps into your computer in addition to the GPS you need to watch for the Advanced button in the lower left corner and as I recall it was about the 2nd or 3rd screen during the install process. Gives you the option to install just in the GPS, GPS and computer or just the computer.

Does selecting advanced install Mapsource to the computer if it doesn't exist?

It still seems odd to me that the default map update is GPS-only and not GPS and Mapsource. Bad Garmin.

I think so, but I'd love to hear the results from someone who doesn't have Mapsource already installed.

I say "I think so" because older versions of Mapsource will be updated during the map update when both "GPS and computer" updates are selected.

Mapsource

CraigW wrote:

It appears to me that Garmin is moving towards using Basecamp in favor of Mapsource for the PC/Mac mapping application. This theory was confirmed by Garmin according to the gpspassion forum. Basecamp uses the map directly on the Nuvi, so installation to the PC is not required.

To make sure you get maps in your Road Trip on your Mac - during install, make sure you hit the Advanced button when you see it and select to install on your mac too - it defaults to installing on your device only.

Details and stats

rame1012 wrote:

2011.20 was released today!

Here's some info from two updates to 2011.20.

The procedure is the same as for the late 2011.10 updates; i.e., a separate download is needed for each GPS updated, as described in an earlier thread:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29239

The 2011.20 update, both for a GPS update and a computer Mapsource update, worked flawlessly on Win7 (both 32 and 64-bit) computers and to a nuvi 7x0 and nuvi 8x5 GPS.

Mapsource was not updated. It remains at v6.16.2.

With a 10Mbps cable internet connection which I believe is slightly faster than the "normal" DSL and cable broadband speeds, the download portion of the update took me 40 and 31 minutes respectively for my two updates. This includes a GPS update and a Mapsource update, so GPS-only updates should take less time. So I imagine that the download portion of the update should take all broadband internet users less than an hour to complete.

The total time from connecting to "mygarmin" to completion of the update process took me 53 minutes for my nuvi 855 (with its USB2 interface) and 90 minutes for a nuvi 750 with its USB1.1 showing how much faster maps are installed to the newer nuvi models that use USB2.

A quick check of 2011.20 on Mapsource shows the new map to be working so far (with no map or POI updates seen within a half-mile or so of my home).

I haven't yet done a road test of the new map but that's next.

Advanced tab is before downloading screen

The advanced tab in the lower left was before you get to the downloading screen.

Intial results are great

rame1012 wrote:

Initial results include testing the new map with Mapsource on two computers and a quick 10-ish mile drive with a multi-destination route on my nuvi 855. I see no problems so I'll predict you're safe to update.

2011.2 update

I think I'll wait until after the rush and see what some of you think of the new maps.

2011.20 update

I'm in the process of d/l 2011.20 as we speak. There was some confusion on my account for some reason.

The mapudater file does not specify the version (at least, not in a way I know) so while myMaps said I had an update, webupdater said everything was current. I guess webupdater is more for OS type stuff than map udates.

Tech support said that if I were to try to install a map that was the same version as currently resides on the GPS, the update process would fail with an error msg I've since forgotten.

At first the update process d/l a garminmapupdater_naeu_a.exe file. After working with tech support for a few minutes, I was able to d/l a garminmapupdater_naeu_g.exe file which allowed me to get 2011.20. I suppose the g part is what distinguishes 2011.20 from 2011.10 for the updater program.

I found the whole process confusing. Hopefully next time it will go smoother.

Mac file location of map?

Hi guys. I've successfully updated my nuvi 765T to 2011.20, but I seem to be having a slight issue with the new MapUpdate software.

Before, when the system simply used the Java applet to perform the download, I could specify where the .dmg file with the map would be placed. I like to save my map files for backup purposes.

I'm a bit concerned, because the MyGarmin page states that I only have today to get the new map file, but I can't for the life of me figure out where that file was downloaded to.

I am aware of the Advanced tab option of installing the map on your computer as well, but that's not what I am looking for. I am looking for the .dmg file with the freshly downloaded, not-yet-installed map. It took me 5 (yes FIVE) tries to get the new map loaded without the unit losing communication with my computer before it was done. I do not want to risk re-installing it on the unit in case the successfully installed map becomes corrupted.

Do any Mac users have any idea about this?

Amazingly This time around the update 2011.20 was ready. Took me about 15 minutes to download and 25 minutes to install on my Unit. I Remember the last update(2011.10) for the 885t took a month + to be ready.
