Imbedded in this topic is a discussion of Canadian customers not being able to get lifetime maps because Garmin won't ship outside of the U.S.
When I ordered my lifetime map subscription a couple of weeks ago, the only deliverable I got from Amazon.com was an access code to use to download the latest map from the Garmin site. There was absolutely no requirement for anyone to mail me anything.
Now, having said that, does that change anything for our Canadian friends that want a lifetime subscription?

You did notice that the first review in the list of 19 was from 2010, the next one from over a year ago and all the rest are from 2008 to 2002. Could be they have got better over time.

Think I'll stick with Amazon anyway
That happened to be the first site that popped up. Bizrate.com reviews are from 2010 and they are not good either. I am surprised that bad reviews go back so many years. You would think they would have gotten their act together by now. I guess there are people who do not bother to look at reviews. They see the cheap price and jump only to find themselves paying more in the long run than they actually saved.
speaking of that, when did Garmin lower the list price on nuMaps Lifetime to $89.99? (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=33379) I thought it was still $119.99. Maybe there will be some even better bargains coming from the online retaillers.
Garmin says "up to 4" updates per year. In North America they have been very consitent with 4 updates in the time they have had the nuMaps Lifetime program (less than 2 years). However, in Europe, they only had 3 updates for the 2010 maps.
Is there a guide to which Garmin units include lifetime map updates? I'd like to be able to compare the cost of a new unit vs. buying updates for my 350. The 350 is still going strong, but as with all things its lifespan is finite. I'm trying to figure if it's worth the 80 bucks, vs buying a new one with a year guarantee on it.
I purchased the Lifetime Map Update for my 755T from Amazon $79.95. When I went to my map downloads at Garmin.com It has an expiration date of

I somehow suspect that I might want to replace my GPS with a better model a few years from now, about the time that maps and POIs have become noticeably outdated in my normal usage.
This just reinforces my hesitance to buy a lifetime update even more.
And Garmin, what if a few years from now when I am ready to buy again, another company has smoked your bacon? Since I won't be married to a high priced lifetime update, I will be easily woo'ed by a competitor that has figured out the GPS thing more than you have.
Don't get me wrong, I like my Garmin but I'm not married to it yet.

A numaps lifetime maps subscription is not a disk or DVD. It's either a "credit card" giving you number or is a number given to you online that you will use online as the Product Key to update your maps on one GPS.
Lifetime means up to four updates per year for the life of the specific GPS device to which you apply the update.

I didn't see the point in a one time upgrade, much less lifetime upgrades for my first street unit, a 260, which I got 2 years ago. I've recently retired that one to backup/loaner status now that I bought a 1490T. For me the 1490T has just about all the features I could want in a GPS it made more sense to me to get lifetime updates. I don't see an upgrade coming anytime within the next three or four years or more.
As others convinced me, it isn't just about the maps being updated, but the built in poi files too. A favorite pizza place recently changed owners and phone numbers. I note in the latest update, which I just installed a few days ago, has the new name and number. On a recent trip we were frustrated after we visited a number of locations looking for a place to eat. Many had closed and others had changed hands and offered menus we weren't interested in.
I can see if you have many units to support, the lifetime updates would be cost prohibitive, but in my case, where I foresee no upgrades for many years to come, it made sense.
Installing lifetime subscription using a "code card"
I just finished installing a lifetime subscription for my Nuvi 465 using a code card. The process is easy but a couple of cautions are worthwhile. If you go to the URL specified on the card you will have no trouble getting started, the only issue I had is that part way through the process a window comes up asking for your activation code (you've already entered it once by this point). The window as it came up contained some letters that weren't the code from my card so I erased them and entered my own--wrong!! Leave the window alone; the code in it is the Garmin code for the maps you are downloading and won't match the card.
The other issue I encountered is that the installation triggered an immediate download of a map update even though my device already had current maps. This, of course, takes quite a while to do and with my satellite internet connection I usually opt to get a DVD rather than take the time and risk of a huge download. Unless I missed something there was no option for asking for a DVD.
You can not get lifetime updates on DVD, only a one time update. Lifetime updates are always downloaded.
If you buy the "non-digital" version of the lifetime updates, you will get what Garmin calls a "gift card" which is the size of a credit card. There is a scratch off area that has the "Product Key". If you buy the "Digital version" the product key is sent to you directly.
Once you have registered the product key, Garmin generates the download authorization code and automatically inserts it in the field mentioned by docj above. When you log into your mygarmin account this code will also appear as the product key for this map update under the Manage Maps tab. It remains active for a year. Every time a new map update is available you'll get a new product key for the new update.

I had problems b/c I didn't realize the product key code was supposed to be entered in the gift card area. I kept on getting "invalid product key code." I called Garmin and they were extremely helpful. Walked me through the whold download and even called later in the day to make sure everything was all right. I was very pleased. the only problem that I had is that I left my Palm desktop open and tried to close it during the download and somehow my contacts got deleted. Don't know if it is related to the download but I recommend closing any programs before downloading.

Is it worth buying the map upates or should I buy a new GPS? I have the StreetPilot c340.

GPSs Compatible With Lifetime Updates
Alandb,
Your link did not lead me to a list of compatible GPSs. However, logging in to MyGPS at Garmin.com confirmed that my GPS is compatible.
I am on the fence with a few others here about lifetime updates. I don't think I need quarterly, or even annual updates. Though I would buy them if they weren't so pricey. Also, I am a multi-GPS family and definitely can't deal with having to buy mutliple lifetime maps at full price.
I somehow suspect that I might want to replace my GPS with a better model a few years from now, about the time that maps and POIs have become noticeably outdated in my normal usage.
