I'm in the same boat as others who are debating buying a new gps or get map updates. My 265WT has been very trusty so far tho, so don't want to replace, but the new models with the lane guidance looks tempting! Decisions decisions. =)

Installing now!

Finally bit the bullet and bought the upgrade. Much thanks to the OP for the post on this deal. I paid 78.95. I looked long and hard at the units available that come with lifetime maps, but the 350 suits my needs well enough. I actually have a Tom Tom too, but it's clunkiness is so bad I don't even use it. I just can't justify spending $200 right now for a new GPS with lifetime maps when this one still works. By the time my 350 dies, science will probably have a way for you to download GPS data directly to your brain and bypass physical units entirely.

They already do....

I'm still waiting for your half price deal. grin

Edit:
Did you see there is a "USED" one for $72.15 on Amazon? Can't believe they are trying to sell a used one.

Lifetime Maps

As of today, Amazon has the digital version for $78.95.

Updates!

Lew wrote:

I hear NAVTEC does the mapping, and they may do one every few years or maybe not. My nuvi is a couple year old, and near my home there is a road on the Garmin maps that the GPS routes me onto. This 1 mile dirt road was closed many years ago and woods have covered it. A newer paved road was installed some 1/4 mile away from the old dirt road. I thought the new map updates would correct this route, but it didn't. Not sure about newer roads in the states. However I did get many more POI's, new hotels, fuel stops, etc. Not sure the one time update was worth it.

Since this last post, I have traveled to areas of Jacksonville where construction of roads has changed and Navtec has not covered the changes made in Jacksonville for some time now. As these sofisticated expressway changes are made it's a mess using your GPS. As Garmin has mentioned before Navtec does mapping updates maybe every two or three years.

WOW

The best price...

Excellent Price, But

They have an excellent price, but their BBB rating is a C-. Personally, I would be afraid to order from them.

I received an email from Buydig.com and lifetime maps are on sale for $78.14. This is a company with an A+ BBB rating. I have ordered from in the past and been very please with them. Here is the link:

Why not just buy the physical card from Amazon for $72.50? It is a few dollars cheaper than the digital download version.

I opted to buy two refurbed 255 units from Tigerdirect for $70 a piece, get them updated one time for free and I figure in a few years when I am tired of them I can always buy the next generation as refurbs for close to the same.

Refurbs

Wow, that's a great deal on the 255's. You could always give one as a gift for that kind of price. Do refurbs get one free update though? I could be wrong, but I thought they were not eligible.

Right, BUT

How much can they screw this up? All they are supplying you is a card with a scrtch off number on it. It's not like it might be something electronic that might have warranty or other customer service issues.

Now the price is $74.95

You get one free map update with the refurbs. Makes it an awesome deal. My wife who until this week used a 4 year old Asus GPS unit with 6 year old maps is happy. Funny I asked her if she wanted the 4.3" screen version of the 255 for $89 and she said what ever is cheapest. I think she now wishes I had gotten her the larger unit. But for the most part we just listen to them.

This is why I have such a hard time justifying buying the map update card when you can get a refurb for less and get an update. In two to three years when I am tired of this unit I will get another.

Oh and the 255 which is pretty basic does exactly what I need it to do, plus the poi's that gramin already have are pretty decent.

The major complaints are product not received or wrong product received. Person calls customer service and get no help. Yes, you can call your CC company and dispute the transaction. I only post so that people have all the facts before they put their money down and then come back here and cry about poor service or something wrong.

But the chance is a lot better for a favorable experience than buying something that could possibley be defective or the wrong model. You could still end up with NO product, which is out and out fraud, though

Shipping

I don't know what everyone is complaining about I added this to my cart and there was free shipping available under "Super Saver" I can't remember the last time I paid for shipping on an item from Amazon.

Every time i try to buy from Amazon.com it tells me, "This item cannot be shipped to the address you selected" Now I'm Canadian which is more than likely to be the problem here. Garmin nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates $72.95. That's a descent price. Any Canadians know how to get past this, other than having it shipped to an American address?

Loss of POI's

My POI's are stored on an 8GB micro SD card and when I update my maps through the lifetime subscription I've never lost any POI's. Now that I've said that, I hope I haven't jinxed myself.

Makes no Diff

It doesn't touch your poi's on the unit or the sd card.
Besides, you have your whole unit backed-up anyways...right?

Note: I have a couple of them backed up. 2010.10 and 2010.40. I use winrar, and I do the whole unit. File size is between 1.2 and 1.5 GB. All i do then is keep a copy of my garmin\gpx and garmin\poi directory. I've bin known to muck things up..just ask Motorcycle Mama...lol

Navteq maps

I agree with you and have posted similar. Just too many obsolete things on the maps and in the POIs. Some POIs that have been open for a few years still not in my "2010" maps e.g. some Panera Breads in my area don't show while a newer one a little further away does show. I have downloaded custom POI files which improve on that.

Some streets show as cutting through which don't and a street shows as going the wrong way, and directs me accordingly.

In 2009 I made several entries on Navteq's reporter page on the web to no avail. The only time they ackowledged one of them was when they said I made an error.

Currently $68.95

Lifetime card is currently $68.95 at Erwin Computers:
http://www.erwincomputers.com/0101126900.html

Don't get put off by the web reviews. I hesitated, but bought two at $66.95 (price at the time..seems to change) and they delivered in 3 days no issues. I do live about 200 mi south of them though.

Thanks
