I believe $47 or so has been the cheapest for the Garmin Lifetime maps--apparently, an error in pricing happened involving $20+ something in the past on Amazon. Hence, if the price can hit non above $50, I could be interested. But, around $50 to $60 could be not a "bad deal" as the person above mentions.
It seems to make more sense to buy a new LMT model, or a refurb, when they are so inexpensive. One map upgrade makes no sense unless you own a Zumo or other incredibly overpriced model.

I purchased the card for 59.99 in late May, 2014, with the above sale. I just activated the card yesterday and installed the update. I entered the number provided on the card on the Garmin website and the Garmin website somehow associated the number with the account that I set up. I had register the Nuvi 360 I had purchased on Craigslist before the update could happen. The update itself took a couple of hours but I could not install the entire U.S. map on my Nuvi 360 because of a 2 GB limit. So, I had to select the region of the country to install. I have yet to evaluate the updated map on the road but the update process seemed relatively simple.

The answer is no you your lifetime updates are only for whatever device you originally bought them for, which means if Garmin decides that your device is outdated or you have not updated in 24 months they are no longer active
They should call them temporary lifetime updates or better yet remove the lifetime from it all together and call them what it is.. A huge ripoff..if I had known I couldn’t transfer to another device I would have never bought them, my nuvi was stolen from my vehicle , I purchased another used one and they wont transfer my maps..beware..do not spend an extra dime on theyre maps, I am more upset at Garmin’s b.s. Policies than I am on having the device stolen.
But many Garmin owners will have lifetime maps going back years, I know I have. If your device has to be replaced by Garmin they will transfer the lifetime maps across.
However in your instance you 'lost' your device. If Garmin simply allowed you to have lifetime maps on another device we could all 'lose' them when we want to change devices and benefit. Most devices these days come with lifetime maps anyway, clearly your second hand unit didn't.

I bought lifetime map updates for a Zumo 550. The Zumo started acting up and I sent it to Garmin. They couldn't fix it, and it was out of warranty. They offered to sell me a refurbished Zumo (for a lot less then when it was new) and they transferred the LM to the refurbished unit. I still have, use and update the maps on that unit. It's a 10 year old device and slow compared to today's offerings, but it still works.

The solution to this retrospectively and for the future is to read the system requires, Terms of Sale, etc. before buying. Just sayin'.
I will agree, though, that buying a nuMaps Lifetime update for a Garmin GPS without lifetime updates may not be the best course unless a person is really committed to an older device for something like the MP3 player. A new Garmin with the latest features can oftentimes be purchased with Lifetime Updates for not much more than the nuMaps Lifetime, especially if buying a Factory Refurbished device.
I don't know what map version your new 2nd device has but if quite old, my suggestion is to call it a learning experience and buy a refurbished Garmin LM or LMT model, then update to the latest map.
In any event, welcome to The Factory. Stick around, there's a lot of good info here.
For my 755T (in 2008) and my 855 (in 2010). In 2008 Lifetime was a brand new thing and there were no discounts and no LMT devices ... so I paid the full price of $120 directly to Garmin. On the 855 I got it for somewhat less ... $80 as I recall.
Although I feel I got my money's worth from these subscriptions (as I am still updating both devices), with current product offerings and prices on new and refurb LM and LMT devices, I would not invest in a lifetime subscription again for any reason that I can think of.
Some years ago, Garmin was offering updated maps one at a time for around $80 as I recall. I said no thanks. Then they offered "Lifetime updates" for around $120 I think. So I inquired: My lifetime or my unit's lifetime? The unit. Again, I said no thanks. Not long after that, they began offering LM (lifetime maps) as part of each unit's purchase price...

good old 260
Similarly, I still have my 260 as a backup. I purchased a life-time map for it, because Garmin did not sell Nuvis with bundled lifetime map then.
I still keep the map up to date on that good old machine.
Wish I could...
...upgrade my car for that price (Lincoln) vs. the hundreds of dollars they want.
