765T screen selects wrong letters and buttons when pressed sometimes

My 765T seems to have a problem when pressing the screen. When I press the screen, many times the button that is being selected isn't entered, but another item elsewhere on the screen. For example, when pressing a letter on the screen keyboard, a different letter in an entirely different area of the screen is often selected. I have 2 other garmin GPS's (C340 & Nuvi 350) and none of the others behave this way. This is very annoying when trying to use the GPS to type addresses or even select functions as we never know which letter or button will actually register when we press the screen. Does anyone else experience this problem? How do we fix this?

Have you tried

Have you tried recalibrating the screen? There are several threads on the steps needed. But before doing that, I would suggest a hard reset.

If nothing else works, maybe we can get Turbo to write a spell check routine for it.

You could try to calibrate

You could try to calibrate your touch screen.
1.Turn gps off.
2.Hold finger in the middle of the screen.
3.Slide power button to left then immediately to the right.Keep finger on middle of screen for one minute.Until calibration screen appears.
4.Follow instructions.
5.Move power button to middle to unlock screen.

7x5 touch screen issues

The 7x5 touch screen problems have been discussed at length. You will find several threads on it if you search. Here is one to start with: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/22074.

Thanks for all the comments!

I just calibrated the screen. It seemed to help a little. But the problem is still there.

I guess I'll call Garmin in the morning.

Thanks!

I guess I'm a little nervous about taking a refurbished unit (I keep mine pristine & it doesn't have any other problems other than this - I'm wondering if I might get a refurb unit with other issues).

Depends

I think all of the 7x5 units suffer from touch screen inacuracies. The "typical" units get an occasional incorrect press .... maybe 1 out of 10. Its annoying but usable. Some of the earlier 7x5's had severe touch screen problems where you could barely use it ... maybe 1 out of 3 or worse. If you have one of these, you will probably want to return it for exchange.

Myblubu, I've been through this too & felt the same way as you but have no fear, Garmin's tech support people are great. I had to exchange mine because of touchscreen issues & received a new unit -not a refurb. I asked them, while on the phone, "this isn't going to be a refurbished unit is it? Because I've only had this thing a short time & I'm very careful with it & would hate to get one that hasn't been cared for..." Being polite will get you a long way with those folks!

Good luck.

How long had you had your unit? They told me since I had it over 60 days, I had to get a refurb unit. But I paid the $99 to get an advance replacement, so I will get the replacement before I send mine in. If the replacement doesn't look good, I'm not going to return mine - I keep good care of mine (no scratches, etc). The only bad thing is that I did the master reset procedure they instructed me to do (including backing up my favorites) and after I did that, my favorites are gone even after I try to copy back the GPX folder that I had backed up on my PC!

You have to

You have to rename the file that contains your favorites before you can use them again.

When you backed up your Nuvi you copied a file called Current.gpx. This is the file that contains your favorites. The problem is that Current.gpx is an OUTPUT file generated by the Nuvi. So if you need to restore your favorites first find the Current.gpx file in your backup and rename it to Temp.gpx. Then copy the Temp.gpx file to the Garmin\gpx folder on the Nuvi.

When you restart your Nuvi it will find the Temp.gpx file and create a new Current.gpx and all your favorites will be restored.

I bought mine at Christmas but don't remember exactly how long I had it prior to the replacement (might have been within the 60 days), however, I do remember nicely telling the Garmin Tech that I should receive a new unit as mine was in perfect shape & still under warranty. It may also depend on who you get as a tech.

Sounds like a good idea to hold on to your existing unit until the replacement checks out though. My guess is that it'll be fine.

As for getting favorites back. I just opened my back-up while my Garmin was plugged into the computer, compared the files & dragged the files that I needed from the back-up into the same folders on the garmin & everything came back as I had left it. I'm on a Mac so I'm not sure if the procedure differs for Windows.

I've got my fingers crossed for you.

By the way, I got the replacement refurb 765T unit and used it on a trip yesterday. It looks good (other than som remaining residue from a sticker or something on the back side). It worked great and I was able to reload all of my favorites - THANKS t923347!

I'm glad that Garmin will replace them. I need to do that because it drives me nuts!!! Sometimes it has a 3-5 second lag too which is also annoying. Once the destination is set though I love it.

you know, I haven't noticed the lag that I'd get sometimes with my original unit on this one. Hopefully it will stay that way!

Everything worked well, no problems with the replacement unit - it worked fine.

The $99 was for them to ship the replacement before I sent my original unit back. There would have been no charge if I sent my unit first, but I didn't want to be without it for about a week. I just sent my unit back yesterday & when they get it, they will credit back the $99

Only through Amazon

NuviHobo wrote:

Yes, but only through Amazon.

My first 765t had a serial number around 143000. The touch screen was so bad I could barely use it. I got an RMA for it through Amazon. They sent me a replacement 765t within a week. The new one was much older though. It had a serial number beginning around 048000. The touch screen worked a bit better but the maps were version 2009 and the firmware was 3.20. First thing I did was update the firmware which promptly crashed the unit. It no longer would turn on regardless of whether or not it was connected to my PC.

I sent it back to Amazon under the RMA I was supposed to send my original one in on & purchased another one. The 2nd replacement was within a few hundred numbers of the 1st replacement (about 048000) and did the exact same thing as the previous one. I turned it into a brick. I sent it back to Amazon.

I gave up and got an RMA through Garmin. I didn't want to go that route since I had to pay shipping to return it to them. I also hear stories of people getting refurbished units in exchange for theirs. Since mine was less than a month old, I felt I should get a new one in return. That is exactly what I got. My Garmin exchanged unit has a serial number starting with 208000. The touch screen works much better than the previous 3, came with firmware version 3.80 & maps 2010.10. One thing that happened that I was pleased with is as far as Garmin was concerned my "in service" date was the date I turned the last one on which was about 6 weeks after my first one that I registered. I went ahead and deleted the registration for my first unit.

I also held off updating the maps since in my area there wasn't enough difference between 2010.10 & 2010.20. I figured the next version should be about due. If not, I had until January 12 to update mine. I also wanted to see if Garmin would make me stay with the originally offered 2010.20 even if a newer version came out before my free update expired. Luckily 2010.30 just came out. I just did my free update and it did update to version 2010.30, not 2010.20. Obviously had I updated to version 2010.20 last week, I doubt if Garming would have been nice and let me update to 2010.30 this week. At least now I have the latest maps for the next several months.

That was an ordeal!

BTW, how do you tell what version maps are on the 765T? I got the replacement unit, but I never thought about what version of maps it has in relation to the unit I returned.

I had the same

problem with my old C330. I would have to do a hard reset nearly every time I wanted to use it. I ended up buying a Nuvi 200 about a year ago. So far, except for it deleting my favorites once, I haven't had any screen problems.

Button Size

The 200 has nice big buttons on the keyboard. The 2x5 buttons are annoyingly small and I'm constantly hitting the wrong letter. Garmin has sacrificed function for a slicker look.
