765t touch screen issues.

My 765t seems frequently misinterprets my touches, as much as 25% of the time. Calibrating the screen only produces minimal improvment. The problem is espcially severe at the bottom of the screen. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

return for replacement

This is a known and common hardware problem with the 7x5 series touch-screens. If you can return it to place of purchase (within your return period), definitely do so and get another unit. If you bought locally, test the unit in the store if possible since they may have a bad batch of them. Garmin has attempted to correct the issue via software but if yours is like the first two bad units I had, NO amount of software band-aid fixes will ever correct plain old bad hardware.

If you're past your retailer's return period, contact Garmin for a replacement.

Nüvi 785T

I just got my Nüvi 785T the touch screen is sensitive but it does seem to be accurate. But I have clicked it a couple times and it clicked the icon above it but I was driving. Does yours do that when you press straight on or from an angle?

I have not noticed any

I have not noticed any difference regarding straight or from an angle. I have found the I can decrease error rate by using the tip of my fingernail. Also, at the bottom of screen, I try touch as low as possible. BTW, I have found that using the stylus from my Palm pilot seem to work pretty well. But I don't want to carry a stylus everywhere I go.

Deffinatly a problem if you have to use a stylus

Yeh sounds like yours has a problem. Mine is nothing like that its just sensitive but when I push on an icon or letter it recognizes it 99% of the time.

I guess I have to get an

I guess I have to get an exchange from Garmin then. What a pain. I spent a lot of time customizing the unit to the way I like it.

Does anyone know if Garmin's RMA process is easy?

I have found pressing harder

I have found pressing harder rather than softer helps to really reduce errors. Also follow what ianlin said above, push on the lower part of the blocks when on the lower part of the screen.

755T

I was gonna purchase 755T, so thanks for the info!

I was having the same problem on my 770. Everything sounds the same - worse at the bottom of the screen, push on the lower part of the blocks, hard pushes work better than soft.

I tried everything that anybody suggested - hard resets, remove the sd card, recalibrate the screen. I think that there may have been minor improvements. Then a few days ago it started working properly again, all on it's own.

same problem

I am having a similar problem with my touch screen... your advice?

I can live with it but it is not ideal.... is it worth it to call and ask for rpelacement? ar ethe replacmeent unit brand new or only refurbished? will I have more problem with the refurbished one and will they transfert the lifetime map?

and for the one swho did it, how long should i expect to live without my favorite electronic toy? smile

I had the same problem. I did call Garmin, they run you through a hard reset & screen calibration (even if you've already tried them), but should offer to replace the unit when those fixes don't work. I've always found Garmin's tech support to be very friendly. When I returned mine, I received a brand new unit & got it about 3 days after they received the one that I returned. So you'll be without guidance for a little over a week.

My new unit was considerably better than the first although I still get a mis-input from time to time.

I can't speak from experience to the Lifetime Map issue as I haven't purchased them. That being said, from what I've read here, there should be no trouble in transferring them to the new unit. Remember to ask your tech support rep about it when dealing with the screen issue.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Call Garmin

I have found Garmin to be very helpful in these matters.

thanks

I'll be calling them, will see if service is good even when we are from Canada...

if I touch with the nail tip instead of the fingertip

I have noticed that on my 760 that if I touch with the the nail tip instead of the fingertip it is much more accurate and sensitive with less pressure. It works as long as you do not cut your nails to short.

I contacted Garmin support.

I contacted Garmin support. They make you run through screen calibration and a hard re-set. When that didn't work, I was offered two choices, first, send it in for repair, which will take 7-10 business days, not including shipping time, second, pre-pay for an advanced exchange, they will only ship me a refurbished unit; when they get the defective one back, they will credit me.

Can anyone tell me the serial number range with the TS issues?

What serial number range has the touch screen sensitivity issues?
