Speed cameras and keeping maps updated

Does the speed camera function on a GPS work by latitude and longitude or by position on a highway? This may seem like a basic question, but then maybe not so basic to new GPS users. I had to ask myself this question recently while driving in France. My GPS (TomTom 910) was purchased about three years ago and still has the original maps for Western Europe. Yesterday I was driving on a new and recently opened autoroute in France. Although my speed camera subscription and downloads are up to date, I noticed that the GPS did not give me any warning for a couple of speed cameras. Fortunately in France they are clearly marked by large signs. I’m assuming that the speed camera works by position on a road and not by latitude and longitude. Correct?? I guess it’s time I updated my maps, or maybe these camera locations just haven't been reported yet. Malc.

Lat Lon..

They were not there because they have not been reported yet.. next time you drive by them you can capture the points and help contribute to there locations.

Jellono: Do you know for a fact that the speed cameras are located by latitude and longitude? The reason I ask is that on the autoroute mentioned above my GPS did not seem to be able to accurately determine position. I assumed that this was because the new road was not yet on my maps, and therefore would not be able to locate any speed cameras either.

.

That's the only way the cameras (or any other location for that matter) COULD be located. The GPS unit doesn't understand anything else. Everything is identified by the coordinates.

Off the map

I rently drove on a new road not on maps, my Nuvi 350 said I was in an alley. It knew the coordinate.

What was the "alley" before it became "a new road"?

Dear Philly,

I wonder what the "alley" was before it became "a new road". I attended a funeral a couple of months ago and Daniel (the direction voice in my GPSr) referred to each road in the cemetery as "alley" while directing me to an exit and my next destination.

Jellono: How do I "capture the points" on my TomTom 910 and then submit them? Lat and Long coordinates? I read the manual for my GPS but it only states that these points can be reported, but with no instructions on how to do it.

Sorry I can't help ... I Do not own a tom tom.. But I thought the unit built XML files like the gamin.. But I would only be guessing. There is a Tom Tom Section on this forum.. http://www.poi-factory.com/forum/53 Post this question up there...
