EV Chargers and Tesla Superchargers POI Files (wishing for)

More so than with, for example, a collection of Wendy's locations, the Supercharger locations are in a constant state of flux.

I think supercharge.info would probably be a useful resource to anyone undertaking such a POI.

I just submitted 2 new POI files: "Tesla Super Charging Stations in the United States" (approximately 2,700 POIs) and "Tesla Super Charging Stations in Canada" (approximately 250 POIs). As soon as they are available on POI Factory I'll let you know.

There are over 69,000 EV Chargers in the United States. That POI file would be way too large.

Actually, it's really exciting to know that others are thinking about the same thing. Based on the replies, it seems something may be in the works.

Been driving in the middle of nowhere for the week hitting national parks. There's not much cell service out here so asking my Tesla for Supercharger locations is hopeless. That's why I'm hoping for a POI file. Did a road trip on the other side of the country last year and drove for hours with no connectivity. The Garmin was the only useful GPS for long stretches. That and paper maps but I didn't see any EV charging locations on that map

It would indeed be a worthy undertaking and quite a valuable POI file for EV owners. A huge project though, and a lot of effort to maintain.

It my travels, I've been taking notes on the charger locations I pass in advance of buying an EV. These are the problems I see for maintaining such a file:

1 - Not all are compatible with every EV.
2 - Adapters are necessary in some cases.
3 - Wait times can be considerable.
4 - Many are out of service due to the lack of trained service techs.
5 - New locations are being added very rapidly.
6 - In some cases, locations are being removed or relocated.

All these factors add to the effort necessary to maintain a POI file. A poorly maintained file can actually be a detriment to an EV owner when relying on a location only to find it out of service or not there at all.

It's also difficult to plan a route not knowing how much time to allow to get a charge.

I agree with you on all the "points" you made. The US Department of Energy maintains a database and interactive map of EV Chargers.

And they provide a public API. I was a computer programmer in my "prior" life.
Wrote a program to pull the data and generate the GPX files.

As I posted earlier in this thread I have submitted 2 new POI files yesterday:
- "Tesla Super Charging Stations in the United States" (approximately 2,700 POIs)
- "Tesla Super Charging Stations in Canada" (approximately 250 POIs).

The data is detailed which includes the status, whether or not the stations are public or private and in some cases the charging price. I'm only creating POIs for active EV Charging stations and those that are open to the public.

Just waiting on the POI Factory Website admin to post the new POI content.
I can periodically run the program to generate updated files and update the POI files on POI Factory.

Now this all depends on how often the US Department of Energy updates their database.
This is not a perfect solution but it is what it is.

Have you considered contacting Tesla? I contacted Kia many years ago, when I wanted to set up the Kia Canada POI. I explained what I wanted to do, along with a link to POI Factory. They were happy to oblige.

I gave them the format that I needed for a csv file asking them if they were able to provide it. It might not work, but you have nothing to lose and everything to gain, if they cooperate.

You might have to massage the data, but it still will be easier and faster.

I remember, last century, asking my employer how many servers of which varieties they had.

I took a look at the supercharger.info website. They have an open API also for accessing the data. I did a query for all Open Super Charging Stations in the USA. The supercharger.info website returned 2,480 stations.

I did the same query for all Open Super Charging Stations in the USA from the US Dept of Energy website afdc.energy.gov. That query returned 2,710 stations - 230 more stations than superchager.info. The afdc.energy.gov website also returns two dates for each station which the supercharger.info website does not provide:
- The date the station's details were last confirmed
- The date station's details were last updated

Found 213 Open stations whose information was updated today (11/18/2024) from the afdc.energy.gov website. So it looks like the stations on the US Dept of Energy website afdc.energy.gov are being updated pretty frequently.

The data for the EV Chargers was obtained from the website locator for each file listed.

If they could only figure out a way to offer real time reporting on whether the charger(s) are in service & not broken and the estimated wait time.

Nothing worse than navigating to one of these locations only to find they aren't useable or have a long line waiting to use them.

Tesla does a pretty good job of just this for their Supercharger network. Just now I pulled out my phone and looked at the charger tab in the location item. I'm looking at a map of New Mexico with a few red location icons each bearing a number. The number gives the in-service but not currently occupied count for that location. When that number goes to zero, the text below gives an approximate wait time estimate (5 minutes is the one I've seen most often--for example when the system has extra usage from holiday travel).

The car has access to the same data, and in more densely populated areas with lots of choices, uses it to route you to available capacity. Here in New Mexico we don't get much choice.

However, I learned on this thread that when the car is out of cell phone service range for the provider it uses, you don't get the SuperCharger information in the car. I've not experienced that yet, so it was good to learn it here.

I swiped the map to show me the south San Franciso Bay area, and noticed a couple of the red icons display a diagonal bar instead of a number. Tapping on the one near highway 101 in East Palo Alto I was a notation that it was closed until 10 a.m., but that 20 of 20 stalls were available, with a 250 kW max rating.

Getting back to topic, I don't see a feasible way to offer this information as a Garmin POI file. But it is out there.

I may have seemed to imply that only Supercharger status is available--not true. As Albuquerque got several city-supported Chargepoint stations, I've got their app on my phone, and it shows current locations, status, and availability for their brand.

I think the most widely used and praised multi-brand app is Plugshare. Mention is made on their website of an API, so possibly their information could be used by other applications.

Just another opportunity for Musk to provide satellite to phone direct communication. Musk should take care of his children.
