Updating

Now, device plus PC map. Download rate peaked at about 43.5 MB/s. Copying 8+ GB's to the Nuvi is snails pace (4.8 MB/s) as always over USB2.0.

Remember, on Windows, one can remove the old maps and downloaded map installer files to free up space if one needs to.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45648?page=2#comment-418223

Edit to add: For some reason the map install to the PC fails. The install to the Nuvi seems to have worked. Redownloading the PC maps to try installing them again.

Some investing appears to indicate the PC installer files for the map didn't download for some reason even though install to device and PC option was selected. Removing the download map files doesn't trigger a redownload of the PC installer map files in Garmin Express 7.16.0.0 (Windows).

I am still on Express 7.15.2 as 7.16 is not offered as an update for me. The map download to computer failed for me also ... map update to 3597 nuvi seems OK tho.

Incidentally, I notice that there were 2 JCV files downloaded for my 3597. I assume one is for the US map file and the other is for Canada/Mexico. I don't remember seeing separate JCV files on the 2023.20 map, but maybe I just missed it.

PC Install Fails

alandb wrote:

Yeah download and install maps to PC (Windows) fails no matter what I try. Tried deleting all the map files on the PC then redownloading the map to install to the Nuvi to see if that would trigger a download of the map installer files. It didn't. It appears just a single 49 MB Disk1.cab file is downloaded and that's it. Any time I select "Install to Computer" it ends up failing.

Issue might be with "download to computer"

Seems as though several have commented that they can't do the latest map update and one common factor may be the mention of the "Download to computer" option being enabled. So perhaps something worth a test, is to try disabling the option and attempt another download.

I personally don't have the option enabled and haven't had any problems doing a nuvi 265WT and a nuvi 2689. I'm using GE 7.16.0.0 on a Win10 machine.

Full NA map (both files) on old Nuvi devices.

As with the 2023.20 update when Garmin went to 2 files for full NA (US file and Canada/Mexico file) some of the older Nuvi devices fail to get both files. POI Factory member Baumback came up with a creative solution that again worked for my nuvi 755T and nuvi 855 to get the full North America map installed on the old devices. Here is a link to the method he came up with: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/52369?page=1#comment-542244

Maps

I personally don't have the option enabled and haven't had any problems doing a nuvi 265WT and a nuvi 2689. I'm using GE 7.16.0.0 on a Win10 machine.

The problem is there is no option to no enable download to computer. See my reply over on the Garmin subforum that has a screen capture of the Garmin Express post install of the maps to a Nuvi. Deleting the maps doesn't solve the issue, Garmin Express (for me) continues to show the Install to Device or Install to Computer buttons. Updating to Garmin Express 7.16.1.0 doesnt solve the issue.

The problem seems to be that the files for installing the PC maps are not downloaded. Just one single file gets downloaded:
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.NA.2024.10\RMU\NA\2024_10\56810671-8e8b-4f10-b768-ae70fc908410\IMG\Disk1.cab

Finally on the 2014.10 map it shows the new subdivision that was built south of me 2 years ago.

Thanks

I was asked to upgrade my Garmin Express then notified there were new maps.. Okay, install and walked away. Came back after supper and all done. On Windows 7 Pro.
Will see what’s new (or what they broke) tomorrow.

There's more than just the cab file in there. The actual map image (D0783510A.img) is at
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.NA.2024.10\
RMU\NA2024_10\56810671-8e8b-4f10-b768-ae70fc908410\IMG\06-d0783-51\rev_0a .

SID, DB, and the JCV files can be found in
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Map\Map_Map.NA.2024.10\
RMU\NA2024_10\56810671-8e8b-4f10-b768-ae70fc908410\IMG\additions .

None of the above invalidates your main point that the PC install files are not being downloaded.

Took three tries to install

Took three tries to install on my 3597 via Mac. I started with Computer and unit install. Computer got installed fine, but the unit showed on the the basic map got installed. I do have a 16 gb card and the install was silent, as usual, not squeaking about splitting the install.

Gave it another install mad it took about an hour, loading it from the computer. Still on the the basic map. So I took the SD card out, Reformatted it FAT32 and tried again. This time it too over an hour, fro the computer, and it took.

Not sue wha the problem is, but apparently the map files aren't being handled by GE properly. The files were on the computer. After the initial download, GE didn't go back to the web to get the files to install.

download to computer problem may still exist

With respect to a topic titled "Garmin Express 7.16.0.0 Unable to install City Navigator North America 2024.10 to Computer", in the Garmin forums SUSSAMB reported 6 hours ago (approximately 1 AM Eastern time, "Latest Express update has resolved this." The thread was then locked, I guess by SUSSAMB. Many individuals are reporting the thread was locked prematurely as they still can't download a map to computer for use with Basecamp.

The question is 'will we notice the change"?

The file size isn't all that much larger than the last map which suggests that the changes were relatively minor.

Yeah not sure why they (SUSSAMB or someone else/mod) locked the thread even though it was indicated one had GE 7.16.1.0 installed and the issue still remains. They unlocked the locked thread and rolled the new thread someone else started into it.

Hopefully will be fixed soon.

Yes, it is definitely still broken with Garmin Express 7.16.1.0 on Windows computers. I wonder if it is working on Mac computers?

Not downloading to computer

I'm not downloading the new map to my computer but it installed just fine on my 2495 LMT and Drivesmart 55. John from PA mentioned (on another thread) that GE 7.16.1.0 still says that there is a new update available even though it's already installed. I don't see that on mine with and without the GPS devices plugged in.

New update message finally cleared

This morning, without having done anything except a reboot, that message cleared a few seconds after opening GE. I do not run GE in the background. I’m speculating but wonder if there. Is a lag on the Garmin servers and by this AM the server had been updated with my activity.

2024.10 map install on PC?Mac

I get the error message when attempting to install 2024.10 on my PC - but there was no problem installing the new map on my Macbook. This leads me to believe that it's a PC issue. Maybe the PC version of Garmin Express is the problem. Just a guess!

I just tried this. I deleted the 2014 folder in ProgramData/Garmin/CoreService, then fired up (Windows) GE 7.16.1.0, and tried a Map Update to Computer.

The result was that in just a few seconds, not after a full download, GE reported the red Error Message. No files were downloaded.

Unless I'm missing something, at least Windows users of GE will need to wait for yet another GE update from Garmin.

It is frustrating. I'm no programmer so I don't know all that's involved and required to create a revision in software. But given Garmin's frequent failures in GE updates to work on On the Road devices, it shows that they don't test an update before offering it. So often, if Garmin had just a few Windows and Mac computers, and a few nuvi/Drive devices, they could test the Update to Device, Update to Device and Computer, and Update to Computer. That they don't do this simple test before offering it to the public suggests that their priorities are not reflected to On the Road devices. mad

I now also maintain 4 of their watches for family members and myself. All of these also use GE.

And the lack of Quality Control Testing is evident on their watch software updates also. So it's not just isolated to Road devices.

It seems like it's Garmin Policy across the board. DON'T TEST, LET THE USERS FIND THE PROBLEMS.

Can you imagine if this sort of software testing applied to cell phones? That company would be out of business in a very short time.

LOL…I grew up (early 1960’s) in an area of northern Ohio that was proliferated with US auto manufacturers. There was at least one final assembly plant for one of the big three. Letting the users be a part of quality control was exactly the philosophy the manufacturer had. The cars were driven from the assembly line to the car carriers and the dealers in conjunction with the customers were expected to find any (hopefully) minor defects.

I can remember as well a time when Consumer Reports had a rating criteria that was essentially “defects at time of delivery”. In 1986, I purchased my one and only Mercedes Benz, actually a special order car. It arrived with a dime sized bubble in the windshield, driver’s side and clearly visible. The interior lights blinked in sequence with the turn signals. I also felt the audio system sucked and was told it was optimized for the human ear. The system actually didn’t have a left right balance. At the time I worked in acoustics so I made a tape of discrete left and right tones. Ultimately all the passenger side speakers were found to be disconnected.

Maybe car manufacturer’s should pay the consumer?

couple differences and one thing still the same...

Prior to 7.16.1.0 Update.... GE Expresss saw 2 updates for each 2689 (Map and TZ) and a Map Update for 660...

After 7.16.1.0 Update.... 660 No longer is reporting a Map Update is available....So this Update has Axed some models....

Next thing I noticed: During the Map Update at 50% point, Map Update changes to ACTIVATE MAPS, then, Goes Back to Map Update (because of 2 major files now??)

And Last thing I notices.... For many versions now.... At about the 80% finished area... the slow USB file transfer slowly speeds up... Not to what I've seen in the past with this version.... but it still speeds up.... Why not this speed from the get go????
I'm just reporting what I'm seeing...

A 2689LMT in both our cars that we love... and a Nuvi 660 with Lifetime Maps that we have had literally forever.... And a 2011 Ford Escape with Nav System that is totally ignored!

Somehow I Got it to Work

I had the same problem where GE failed to install to computer.
I tried installing from the Drive Smart 65 to Basecamp, but that didn't work.
I then Reinstalled the map to the DS65 from Garmin Express and after that completed, I Installed to computer from Garmin Express and this time it worked.
