I am having problems downloading the map to PC as well, and yet I have the files mentioned. Likely because I updated my DriveSmart 65 prior to trying to download the map.

As a troubleshooting experiment, delete the downloaded Map folder, which contains the maps copied to the Garmin device, then try the install to computer option in GE. Then check what files have been downloaded after GE indicates an error.

I just tried this. I deleted the 2014 folder in ProgramData/Garmin/CoreService, then fired up (Windows) GE 7.16.1.0, and tried a Map Update to Computer.

The result was that in just a few seconds, not after a full download, GE reported the red Error Message. No files were downloaded.

Unless I'm missing something, at least Windows users of GE will need to wait for yet another GE update from Garmin.

It is frustrating. I'm no programmer so I don't know all that's involved and required to create a revision in software. But given Garmin's frequent failures in GE updates to work on On the Road devices, it shows that they don't test an update before offering it. So often, if Garmin had just a few Windows and Mac computers, and a few nuvi/Drive devices, they could test the Update to Device, Update to Device and Computer, and Update to Computer. That they don't do this simple test before offering it to the public suggests that their priorities are not reflected to On the Road devices. mad

I'm running v7.16.1.0 of Garmin Express, v4.7.4 of BaseCamp, v6.16.3 of MapSource and Windows 10. My process: 1) Plugged in nüvi 3597 and backed up. 2) Launched Garmin Express and allowed it to update to v7.16.1.0. 3) Killed and restarted Garmin Express with the "run in background" box unchecked. 4) Installed maps to "Computer Only"... Map installation to computer was successful. 5) Installed maps to "Device Only". Map installation to Device was successful.

After 7.16.1.0 Update.... 660 No longer is reporting a Map Update is available....So this Update has Axed some models....

That's interesting although not surprising for these old models with the 2 GB file size limit. The updates are still being offered on my old nuvi 755T and nuvi 855, although I have to jump through some hoops to get the full NA (both files) installed. Especially the nuvi 855 is troublesome because Garmin Express has never been able to directly access the SD card on that unit. So that makes cloning a necessity for the 855, as even the US file only plus speech recognition files and JCV files won't fit in internal memory. Then if you want the large JCV files, that is an additional step. It won't surprise me if Garmin stops offering the map update on this device in the near future.

JanJ wrote:

And Last thing I notices.... For many versions now.... At about the 80% finished area... the slow USB file transfer slowly speeds up... Not to what I've seen in the past with this version.... but it still speeds up.... Why not this speed from the get go????
I'm just reporting what I'm seeing...

I have noticed this too. My theory is that it is because the largest files (map .img files) do not compress as efficiently as some of the feature files (like the .JCV and .SID files), so when these feature files are copying, you get a faster rate. Or possibly it is just the way that Garmin Express calculates and displays the progress bar.

It Worked for Me!

It didn't work yesterday, installing to my PC. I got the red error box about server failure. Today it worked. No change to Garmin Express from yesterday, v7.16.1.0. They must have fixed something on their end.

Download Map To PC

I recently updated Express to 7.16.1.0 and updated my RV770 & nuvi 2699 to 2024.10. Then I tried to update the maps on three PC's with no success. An error message appeared almost immediately stopping the process.

Go Figure!

Yup ... didn't change a thing and GE "Download to Computer" works for me now too!

Garmin fixed back end

Garmin has apparently fixed MD5 hash mismatch on the back end that was preventing the PC map download.

Thanks

Downloaded directly to the GPS over wifi with no apparent issues.

What a difference a few hours make

gschafer wrote:

I had the same problem where GE failed to install to computer.
I tried installing from the Drive Smart 65 to Basecamp, but that didn't work.
I then Reinstalled the map to the DS65 from Garmin Express and after that completed, I Installed to computer from Garmin Express and this time it worked.

Gerry

Edit: this is on a laptop running Win 7

I just retried the Update to Computer. It started the download but eventually gave another red error. But on a re-attempt again, it went directly to Activating Map and in a few seconds, a green Success.

Now the proof of the pudding (which is in the eating)...Restarting Basecamp, I now have the new map accessible on my PC.

All is well in GarminLand. cool

Nuvi 755T Downloaded Two JCV Files

alandb wrote:

Incidentally, I notice that there were 2 JCV files downloaded for my 3597. I assume one is for the US map file and the other is for Canada/Mexico. I don't remember seeing separate JCV files on the 2023.20 map, but maybe I just missed it.

I don't know whether your 3597 Nuvi downloads The Large JCV file but both the 2023.20 and 2024.10 updates downloaded two files for the Large JCV file on both occasions on my Nuvi 755T.

2023.20
D1279470A.jcv (800.4MB) and D9673010A.jcv (751.4MB)

2024.10
D9673020A.jcv (750.8MB) and D9674020A.jcv (77.8MB)

One thing of note is that both of the more recent Large JCV files are smaller than before with one being quite a bit smaller at 77.8MB.

One sample only: in a routine drive I was alerted to a nearby school that I haven't been alerted to before.

Drive 52 was fine.

I updated my Drive 52. The download went fine.

No issues here.

One weirdity, No problems

It was weird how it installed. The first half (exactly 50% to my naked eye) of the download took a looong time: download speed ~3 MB/sec. The second half of the download took practically no time at all: download speed ~30 MB/sec. Like I said, weird. Anyway, it seems like everything still works. And I didn't try downloading to my computer.

The first 50% is the download to your PC of the relevant files (this happens in all cases, the download to computer option is the installation of files for BaseCamp), the second 50% is the install to your device.

Region?

Mine is acting goofy. On my 265W, it tells me only the Canada region is available. Wonder why that is.

I'll have to run over and get an SD card today and try to install the full maps.

Haven't tried my 2689 yet.

I updated my DS 61 a few days ago, process looked to be going great until the very end when I got the red error banner saying it didn't work. I had chosen the d/l to device and PC. Checked the device again and it was all up to date, but the current file could not be found on the PC.

I see now some folks have had success with doing both in the time since I had updated mine. I will see what happens when I get around to updating the wifes DS 61.

You'll be fine. Garmin fixed the problem, which was on their end. I downloaded to PC without issue once the fix was in.

If you read up thread you'll see Garmin fixed the install map to Windows PC issue (MD5 hash error) on Friday, 02/03/2023. You shouldn't have any problems downloading and installing to a Windows PC now.

I’ve updated my nuvi 265 without any issues but I do have a 16 GB SD card installed. These maps keep getting bigger and bigger so make sure your card (if you use one) is big enough.

Also, make sure you are using a proper cable for the connection. There are two basic types of USB cables, one is for charging only and the other is for charging and transfer of data. The charge only type of cable will not allow an update.

250W

I used the same cable for both. The 250 shows 2024 but no response so I will just use it as is,as where I travel the 250W is good enough also I have a 3597 that works fine and the voice commands are nice.

New School Entry?

minke wrote:

After a short drive school alerts SEEM to alarm at a greater distance than before.

More experience needed.

When 2023.30 was released there was a new "school" alert for the administration building of the local school district where there was no school. I was somewhat nonplussed (minused? or zeroed?) but it was ignorable. What I suspect that I am seeing is a ≥15 year old school with a map entry which wasn’t there before. In routine driving I swing barely within .4 miles of the school.

I've noticed the school

I've noticed the school alert, but at least on my DriveSmart 65 it actually isn't a school alert. The alert is for school crossings, not the schools themselves. Next time you drive by that location, look and see if your GPS triggers the warning when approaching a school crossing.

Great! Something else to do.

Great! Something else to do.

This update (2024.10)...

Actually has a totally new road in it that has not been physically completed yet. I drive by it's construction on a daily basis (Irvine, CA), have watched it's progress and it seems to be at least a month or two away from being done. It cuts directly through was has been agricultural fields for many, many years (as most of Irvine has been). It's also listed on MapQuest which uses the same "Here" map database that Garmin uses. I have not tried to see if routing (on MapQuest or the GPS) will try and take you on it...

updated my Garman nuvi 1450lm next i downloaded to my computer, had 1 red error when i tried to do both at once all is good now

Ah - a correction!

Several months ago, I used the error reporting feature to report that the speed limit programmed into the previous map for a section of road near here was incorrect.

This morning, I noticed that the incorrect speed limit was removed in the most recent map release. Don't know if it was my report, or information from someone else, but it does show that Garmin appears to do more than merely change the name of the map file when they release updates.

Sadly, while they removed the incorrect speed limit, they didn't replace it with the correct limit, but instead left the speed limit indeterminate. Not a real problem for me, but just an observation.

unable to install 2024.10 to computer

I upgraded to Garmin Express to 7.16.10.0 and still am unable to install 2024.10 to my computer.
