Garmin Map Update 2017.10 is out

My Garmin Express has a map update for 2017.10. What is Garmin doing?

<<Page 3>>

2017.10 + Garmin Express 4.1.16.0 Report

I used Map Updater on both my 255WT using Alandb cloning method and all went extremely well without a hitch.

I then used Map Updater on my 3597LMTHD using Alandb cloning method and saw that it had downloaded 5 out of the 7 files in the \.System folder. I deleted the entire contents on the SD card and fired up Garmin Express and updated to the latest version 4.1.16.0

The map download went well but once it got to 50% the time remaining jumped from several minutes to more than 9 hours ! No problem nor panic since I'm doing the cloning method and decide to just shut down Garmin Express.

I wait a few seconds and fire up Garmin Express and it continues where it left off at 50 % and within a matter of minutes the entire download is on the SD card. grin

I transferred all the new files onto my unit & the job was done. I then used CCleaner to clean the history, cache etc.

Once the cleaning was done I looked at my SSD on the computer (running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit) & noticed that I had lost ALOT of space and proceeded to do the following.

I pressed the window key and the letter E on my keyboard and at the top right corner of the screen I clicked search computer, size and then gigantic and saw for some reason or another all the downloaded files were on my "C" drive. I didn't download the map to my computer therefore I deleted all the Garmin Core 2017.10 related items and regained my lost disk space.

The same thing happened with the last map update and have no idea if it's Garmin Express leaving behind the humongous files or it has something to do with my computer ? I do know though that in the past when using Garmin Map Updater the files were never left behind.

Others here have also mentioned Garmin Express acting funny at 50% while others have also noticed in the past updates the files being left behind on the "C" drive.

I just thought I would share my findings in hoping to reassure those that are encountering the same & hoping we'll figure out a fix someday !

Cheers smile

That's normal

Express installs the necessary files to your PC and then compiles your map from that. Those files remain behind in case you want to update another device or reinstall the map onto a device.

If there's no need to do that you can safely delete those files as you're right, they do build up and take up a lot of space especially as files from previous updates also remain.

Garmin Express leftovers on "C Drive"

I'm not at all impressed in the manner in which Garmin Express leaves behind files everytime the program is used.

I don't think the average user knowns or should have to jump through hoops after doing an update to clean Garmins leftovers.

After searching the gigantic files I also did did the same for huge and large and saw that the software & voice update I did a few weeks ago for my 3597 were also on my "C Drive" !

I saved approximately 7 GB space on my SSD after having cleaned up Garmins files left behind.

I can see reasons to keep the files but also see good reasons to be able to easily delete them. A nice future feature of Garmin Express would be a cleanup button, even better a cleanup allowing us to choose either all or selective files to be deleted.

Update

Update went well here on a 2689.

Express progress bar.

It has been my observation that the progress bar in Garmin Express represents the entire download/install, not just the download. So the 50% half-way mark seems to be the end of the download step and the beginning of the file generate and copy steps. I have noted somewhat of a delay at 50% after almost an hour of steady downloading progress. But I just maintained my patience and the process took off again after a couple of minutes and completed just a few minutes later. So for me, the second 50% is much quicker than the first 50%.

Weird Experience

I had a weird experience. After the successful update, my Nuvi 2350 informed me it did not have any detailed maps (I could see the maps in PC on the SD card and when connected to Garmin Express, it showed I had the new 2017 map on my device).

Had to take out the card, reformat and reinstall the map. Now it works. Anybody run into this issue?

Note that the card was working fine with a 2016 version map when I ran the update.

Not really what you experienced but I always format the SD card before a map update now.

I have two Zumo's, a 450 & a 550, both long ago ran out of enough space to fit the entire NA maps on the unit alone so I have to download new maps to the Zumo and PC so I can transfer what didn't make onto the Zumo to the SD card. I don't recall having your exact problem but I do remember not being able to install directly to the SD card while downloading the maps.

Anyway, when updating my Zumo's these days I always eject and format the SD card. Then download whatever portion of the map to the Zumo itself and the rest via mapsource to the SD card and haven't had any problems

Whenever you get a "no detailed maps" warning, the first thing to check is your device's Map Info or myMaps page and confirm that there is a checkmark next to the newly installed (or old) map. I've found that on occasion, a map update, especially if there are other software updates performed with the map update, will change some of your device settings. If no map is selected, you will receive the error message. Then too, a corrupt map update will also cause this, and if this is true, your only option is to reinstall the map as you did. I think that Garmin Express and GarminMapUpdater will report that you have the new map installed after a map update attempt even if the map files on the nuvi are corrupt and won't work.

Thank you!

Good update

Well, my second download using GE and the second time it crashed in the middle of the installation with an error message. Ended up having to shut down GE then restarting it to finish the installation. I am going back to MU for future installs.

I have a "C" drive that has a SSD and have all my programs on this drive. I have an "F" drive with a normal HDD and everything that I save on my computer is on this drive (Pictures, documents, GPS back-ups etc)

To see the leftovers left by Garmin Express and eating up my disk space on my "C" drive I did the following :

I pressed the window key and the letter E on my keyboard and at the top right corner of the screen I clicked search computer, size and then gigantic and saw all the downloaded files on my "C" drive.

I also did did the same for huge and large files and noticed that the software & voice update I did a few weeks ago for my 3597 were also still on my "C Drive".

I deleted these files and immediately regained my lost disk space.

Thoughts ?

AFAIK, all City Navigator North America maps are NT only. The NT vs NTU complication applies to Europe maps.

When using the Garmin Express program on Windows 7, one can choose the Install Path (for the maps installed to the PC) under Install Options. For me it defaults to "C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Maps".

Further the Garmin Express program uses the following directories on my Windows 7 PC when downloading content and remnants may be left over after maps get installed to the PC or the GPS unit.
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Firmware
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Map
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\CoreService\Downloads\Temp

Generally older Garmin maps installed to the computer can be removed (at least on Windows OS) via the Control Panel Uninstall Program app.

Updated my map

I checked the option to download maps to unit and PC.
When my maps were finished I had a message "Maps installed to unit but unable to install to PC"
I opened BaseCamp and my 2017.1 map was there. Do you think it is ok or maybe something missing? Should I download it again to PC? It takes so long and just didn't want to download it again if it's ok.

The map downloads always remain until I delete them from that folder. They've even remained after uninstalling the installed map via the Control Panel. My understanding is they remain so a user can reinstall the maps to either their Nuvi or to their PC without having to redownload.

Same thing happened to mine. I tried to download it again to the computer only, it only took a few seconds for it to pop up the same error message.
I checked the Maps folder and found the 2017-10 map and a 2017-10 shortcut created on the second download attempt. I deleted the shortcut, then opened BaseCamp and found that it was indeed seeing the 2017-10 map. Looks like the failed to install error was a false alarm.

Help...

So I successfully updated maps last year on my 660 with help from Alan and a couple of others. I split the NA 2015 maps between the internal memory and a 2G card. Fine.

I downloaded the new 2017.10 maps to my PC as before. I copied all the files on both the internal memory and SD card to the PC as backup. I will replace the 2G card with a freshly formatted 8G card and put all 2017.10 map info on the card to make future updates easier.

Copied all the backed up data from the 2G card to the new 8G card.

I then used MapInstall to put the 2017.10 maps onto the new 8G card. Finished in a little over an hour. Looked at all the data on both drives on the PC and saw there were duplicate maps from last year on both drives.

Fired up the Nuvi to see where I stand. Map info says the 2015 map is checked and displaying.
No 2017.10 info.

Looked at the both drives again on the PC and deleted the duplicate 2015 maps on both internal and SD card. Only the 2017.10 gmapsupp file is present on the SD card.

Fired up the Nuvi again and now there is no map displaying and map info. is greyed out.

What do I need to reinstall? TIA!

As Map Updater has never kept a single file downloaded such as the voices and software updates.

I think we decided at the last update that the nuvi 660 has two things that make a full map update complicated:

One is that the nuvi 660 can not read files over 2GB in size, and of course the full City Navigator North America is and has been for a while, over 2GB.

The other is that the nuvi 660 can accept only a single map on the SD card, named gmapsupp.

The result is that the only way the 660 can access all of North America is to install a portion of the map to the nuvi itself. If installed by Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater, it'll be gmapprom; and I think if installed from the computer via MapInstall, it'll be the internal gmapsupp. Then install with MapInstall from the computer the remainder of North America, the part not in the nuvi itself and this will be the SD card's gmapsupp.

Together, they should let the 660 see the entire map.

In reading your post, I think I inferred that you may have a single file for the whole map and I expect that's over 2GB and therefore not seen by the nuvi. Did I read your post correctly?

Help...

You did indeed read my post correctly, thanks for helping me last time. After walking away from the issue for dinner I seemed to remember that the file has to be split in two pieces for those very two reasons. Some portion needs to be in the Nuvi for any map version to be seen and, of course, for the size constraint.

Interestingly, the 2015 update worked great set up that way.

I'm off to redo the maps...

After I'm done updating all the units, I delete the Garmin files left behind. Sometimes I need to delete BaseCamp also, since I don't like it and therefore don't use it. Why GE feels the need to install all this and not cleanup, at least old versions, is just a guess.
