Updated map to 2023.20

2797

Required flash drive to update (lower 48) first time.

After updating. No 3-D map, low detail. No destination choice allowed. (i.e, utterly fucked up).

How to zero out and start over.

Yes, using latest GE and updating via USB.

I have no idea how I got it.

I have no idea how I got it. Just ran GE and was notified of a map update. Update was a bit of a mess because it required a microSD for install. Found one, inserted it, and it looked like install completed. But result is a mess. How to wipe and start over?

After reset

After reset, map version now shows as 2023.10. But something is very wrong. Display Map shows only major roads, despite detail level set at highest and 3-D set on.

That's odd

Generally when I read that only major roads are shown, I assume that the City Navigator map is corrupt, not installed, or not selected. If you say that your device shows 2023.10 in myMaps, then the only likely possibility is that the map is not selected. You do see a check mark by the map, right? And myMaps does show City Navigator Lower 48 states, right?

Now if you reported that no roads were being shown, I'd suggest that you lost your basemap, but that's not your case.

Could you check on the device and SD cards and report all filenames and their sizes for files ending in .img? That may give us a clue.

MyMaps shows no map at

MyMaps shows no map at all.

No *.img on GPS
gmapprom.img is 286M on SD card.

run the map update again

Run the map update again in GE. First, be sure the GPS battery is fully charged. Restart the GPS - not just sleep. A software update may not have completed. We don't know if that GPS was getting a software update. That would be done before the map update.

Make sure the computer does not sleep while the map update is running. Change the power management settings for the computer to be on all the time.

similar problem?

Here is another thread that solved a similar problem. It is rather long, but the OP was successful in the end and posted a detailed explanation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, someone

AJBoots wrote:

I believe that gmapprom.img only is recognized when it's stored in the GPS. Try renaming all the SD card's gmapprom.* files to gmapsupp, then reboot the GPS with installed SD card:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39338

Note that the link also shows other gmapprom files which includes the .unl unlock file. Without an unlock file, the .img file won't work in a Garmin device.

But then, another possible issue is that I'd expect the Lower 48 states to be larger than 286MB which means the file could be an incomplete download or that the GPS has other .img files that you haven't seen. Does your computer see a .system folder in the nuvi? If not, you could be missing seeing lots of files.

Whatever the case, your device's showing nothing in myMaps indicates that the GPS sees no City Navigator map file resulting in your seeing only the basemap with only major roadways listed.

@CraigW

Some of the newer Garmin's will recognize any map name including gmapprom.img on the SD card. I am not sure about the 2797 though.

Hidden files?

When you're looking for files on your device, is Windows set up to show hidden and protected files?

Which models need (micro) SD

Which models need (micro) SD card to complete the update?

depends

riveroaks wrote:

That depends on the size of the map. Over time, the map file gets larger in size when it is updated. That means that every Garmin GPS that accepts an SD card should have one installed. A GPS that does not need the SD card today might need it for the next update.

Garmin internal memory.

riveroaks wrote:

See this faq: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375. Basically any model with 8GB or less of internal memory will need a SD card to install or update the full CN NA map and all the associated feature and accessory files.

Just to confirm the

Just to confirm the confusion here.... Just opened up GE and it says New Map for my old Nuvi 660 was available 2023.10 (That was installed multiple times a few weeks ago.... and ended up being ether corrupted such that entire name of road was not shown (Map Installer), or didn't offer partial loading to SD card, and tried loading entire map on SD card which was not seen by the 660) methinks GE is at fault (7.12.1.0)

No 2023.20 update

I just checked and there is no update for my DS55, 2495LMT and 1390T. Still showing 2023.10 as the latest update.

correct

That's good to know. The 2597 may occupy a sweet spot in having 8GB of internal storage, while not offering things like the 3597's (another 8GB device) digital elevation map, and this leaves lots of room for large map updates.

I will predict that you use one of the Navigation voices that came on the 2597 from the factory and you didn't add all the optional voices:

twisted

Good for those owners.

When the 2022.10 maps came out I had to add a microSD card on a 2598, that has 8GB of internal storage, in order to fit the map update on the unit.
