Garmin Map Update 2017.10 is out

My Garmin Express has a map update for 2017.10. What is Garmin doing?

Success with some glitches

Started fine and was on pace to finish in about 40 minutes...a new record. About 30 mins. into the update the "estimated time left" line started constantly bouncing: 7 hours, 45 mins, 17 hours 21 mins.... yada yada yada. After this went on for about 15 mins I blamed the Garmin end, cancelled and re-started. It settled back on 40 mins and finished in about 10. About 1 hour total. I really think the best bet is to wait two weeks or so after the release until the mad rush is over and their servers and connections are less stressed.

Download went well. Made my new backup.Even though I skip the software update. It still loaded the text files back that I had previously deleted. Funny though the keyboard and help files stayed just like I had them. So you may want to double check if you had removed some of the files before.

Nitpicking - BPS vs BAUD

Estimated time remaining, 7 hours 35 minutes. It started at 13 hours.

Yeah, remember when a 14.4 modem was awesome? Then 28.8... then 57.6 baud rate. Then 128 bps ISDN was just radical. 25Mbps is now common, with internet access providers pushing 75, 100 and even faster service.

Just a bit of nitpicking. 56k was a rating of BPS - bits per second - not a BAUD rate. The two are not the same.

Thank You

Thanks for the info.

Used Garmin Express. Update time - 20 minutes from start to finish. The estimated time started at 53 minutes and the last estimated minute was about 4 minutes long. The downloading only took 6 minutes. The rest was prep. and updating map to computer and device.

MapUpdater?

Is MapUpdater still not seeing the new maps? Is everyone using GE?

Used GE for my 2689 & my 2460.

2689 to device and computer

2460 device only

Updating both took about 2 hours.

Good to know even though I switched to GE in the past year.

For those planning to use it, remember that there will be problems if using it on a device that offers a 3D terrain (DEM) map.

I find it odd that 2017.10 is 2.03 Go when the previous one was over 5 Go???

Actually the gmapprom.img file for the full NA 2016.20 map was 2.32 GB. For 2017.10 it is 2.40 GB. The full download of 2017.10 for my 3597 including all the support files was over 6.3 GB.

MapUpdater wouldn't work for me. I had to use Express and it loaded a bunch of junk I didn't select. I had to go back into the unit and delete it.

What things did Garmin Express install that you decided to delete? I prefer Map Updater too, but switched to Express a few map versions ago when Map Updater no longer handled the GMAPDEM.IMG file correctly on the 3597. As I remember though, Map Updater also installed other device updates whether you wanted them or not. So I am curious. What things were installed by Express that would not have been installed by Map Updater.

Express loaded a bunch of text and keyboard files that I didn't want. I never had MapUpdater do that. WebUpdater would do that if you selected certain updates.

Good Job GE

Problem free for nuvi clone and computer update. 52 minutes and all was done.

I used it (as well as Basecamp) yesterday and today ..... no problems. Everything worked as expected.

I don't remember the last time I had a problem with GE....

Wow that's surprising

Wow, what a pleasant surprise. I wasn't thinking we'd see another update until the end of winter. Yay!

....Wait a second. It's telling me "See Pricing" next to my 2798LMT. What the heck? A system less than 1 year old and now I have to pay for my supposedly free lifetime maps? Something isn't right!

Question folks

With 2017.10, is there a new DEM file that is downloaded with this map set when using Garmin Express & Map Updater ? Is the DEM file the same size as with map set 2016.20 or has it changed ?

Much appreciated & thanking you all in advance, it'll help me decide which program to use in updating my 3597 smile

From a few posts on page 1 of this thread, the DEM file for the 3597 remains the same as it's always been.

For updating a 3597, either use Garmin Express or be sure to have a saved copy of the DEM file to copy back to your device after the update as GarminMapUpdater does not respect the DEM map:

I don't believe I've ever seen a DEM file ever get updated by Garmin Express, Map Updater or otherwise. The DEM on the unit stays on the unit and is not updated...unless I've missed something in the past.

On my 3790 (large DEM) or my 3490 (small DEM), I have never seen this file get updated. How often does the digital elevation data ever even change? wink

crashed

I was using express and it took about 25-30 min and all of a sudden a big red error was on the screen and my 1450 was kilt so I had this problem before with express, I took out my sd card and formatted it and started the update again and it took about 25-30 min and this time all went well yea !!!

MapUpdater

MapUpdater is back working again and does not drive you into the Garmin site to use Express as it did yesterday.

Thanks!

OK here 2689 & 660 (Using SD Card)

Garmin Express used here.... About 30 min on the 2689, and maybe 12 min on the 660 (Via SD Card) [Thank You -- alandb!]

On the 660 I switch back and forth between 2 SD cards. GE pre-selects "LOWER 49 States".. One SD contains current maps, other has last version maps.... I've never had to switch back, but it's nice to have a fallback, even if you never use it!!

You probably hit 'Install all' rather than just select to install the map. If you do the latter you don't get the additional updates.

hmmm

just thought of something the last update was 2016.20 now we get 2017.10 and its January 2016 now ! is Garmin trying to tell us something , will we get another update at all this year I know they were talking about reducing the amount of updates.

Three I believe

They said they were going to reduce to 3 a year, and only twice a year for the older style EU NT map as most devices now use the EU NTU map, which as I've posted was just updated with 2016.30, contrary to the CN NA 2017.10 (which should have been 2016.30 as well).

What will now happen only Garmin knows, and I don't think they've said!

Updated to 2017.10

Took almost exactly 45 minutes to update my Nuvi 2699 using Garmin Express. Only strange thing was that GE showed the status bar fine up to about 50%. At that point the status bar started jumping around with the time jumping from 7 minutes to over 20 hours to go. Install ended shortly after that but it was a bit worrisome for a few minutes that something had gone wrong.

Just a note. If you download

Just a note. If you download for the first install and include installing it to the computer for BaseCamp. The second unit will use the files already downloaded by the computer for it's install, cutting out the download time.

Cloning.

seedless wrote:

No. Garmin Express keeps copies of downloaded files and only downloads what is necessary after the first install. Usually the map update for the second and subsequent devices takes only a few minutes.

There are some situations where cloning is the preferred method. But for most users, it is probably best to just stick with the standard methods of Garmin Express.

It depends on the model your updating. The update formode ls with DEM data, 3D data, JCV data, and road data can be over 6GB. For older models that just use the road data it really depends on how much of a full North American map you can, or want, to install on the device. The full road data file, gmapprom.img is 2.4GB.
