For mblanc01

mblanc01, could you please edit your post to revise the Subject to Garmin Map Update 2017.10 is out?

That will help folks know that this is NOT the "When will 2017.10 be available?" thread that usually goes for ten pages before the map actually is made available.

Wow, what a surprise to see a new map without a multipage "when" thread.

I'll try an update or two this morning and report back if any issues arise. I'll use Garmin Express.

Thanks

I appreciate the heads-up.

2017.10

Yes, I was expecting a map update any day now, but was surprised to see the version number. When Garmin had 4 map updates per year, the .10 version typically came out in April, so it makes me wonder what happened to 2016.30. There was a 2016.30 version for Europe.

Also noted that Garmin never published the manifest this time. Are these changes related to their arrangement with the new owners of Here? Who knows what Garmin is up to?

In any case, I will start downloading to a clone of my 3597 and see what happens.

Unusual!

Garmin have clearly changed their numbering system as this map would normally have been 2016.30

This update was the fastest ever, took only 6 minutes total from the time I started Garmin Express till the update and install to my desktop computer was complete. This Comcast Blast + internet speed is amazing.

For the rest of us mere mortals (including me with a 50MB internet speed), it's looking to be a roughly 2-hr update. It could be longer or shorter since I'm still in the download process.

[Later] Full update from download to installation was complete in just one hour give or take...and it was to my GPS and computer.

A quick check shows recent roadway updates in northern AZ appear on this new map update. Thanks to Here (or whoever) as well at the state or county for updating the roadway info.

[Later still] Tested the new map with a couple routes in and around town. It works great including the addition of a couple of recently-completed roundabouts.

UPDATE

I am going to wait until every one has updated theirs.

That still isn't as big a DEM file as the one I use. I can't recall whether I saved it off of my 3597 or 3790, a few map updates ago, but the one I use on both units is 1.14 GB or 1,227,325,440 bytes, or twice as big as the one your using.

I recall that we have discussed this before Rick. What I don't remember is what is gained by using the larger file ... better resolution? more coverage? I followed the early discussion as well. As far as I remember, it remains undecided as to whether the larger file offers more detail or if both files offer the same detail but the smaller has more compression.

nuvi 855

My nuvi 855 (and I expect all nuvi 8x5 devices) was still able to internally install all of North America. It has just 54.8MB of free space so I expect this to be the last full map update for it, and with so little free space, I do wonder if it'll tend to crash more often. Hard to tell since it's only a backup device for me and hasn't been used on the road for quite a while.

As expected, it comes with the tiny JCV file. Also, my results are with a 855 that has had most or all foreign language files removed, but does have six TTS English voices and several non-TTS voices installed. If manually substituting the large JCV, a external SD card will be needed. Future updates will likely be for less than all of North America or will be done using the clone method and a SD card for the map.

I

I used Garmin Express, and alandb's clone method. It's the first time I've used Express and it worked fine. This update seemed a lot faster than past one's done using our fairly slow Arizona DSL connection. Either Garmin has made some improvements of our internet provider has. My bet is on the ISP. smile

Interesting. This is either a temporary glitch or is the beginning of the end for GMU, at least v 3.3.4.

At least for the PC, v3.3.4 is still the most current version.

My thoughts too! Would much prefer to continue using MapUpdater.

My thoughts too! I'm hoping that Garmin just hasn't setup MapUpdater for downloading this new map yet. Or, Garmin has a newer version for MapUpdater that just isn't available yet. Personally, I hope Garmin doesn't do away with MapUpdater because I would much prefer to continue using MapUpdater over Express.

My guess is that GMU will soon offer the new map update. I base this upon Garmin's fairly recent FAQ stating that Garmin Express won't work on older Windows XP machines and they they need to used GarminMapUpdater instead.

Either GMU will offer the new map soon...or Garmin is writing off map updates for anyone still using Windows XP.

Updated with Garmin Express on 3597 and 2495, no issues.

Tried Mapupdater V3.3.4 first. Got the same message as Koot, indicating that 2016.20 is the latest version.

Tried again after the successful update with GE. Now it would go through the initial stages of updating. But then it displays a banner asking me to either buy a new map (presumably 2017.10) or Exit. It also offer an option of entering a product code.

I went to MyGarmin and got the product code for 2017.10 from my registered 2495 and 3597. But MapUpdater rejected them as invalid.

Back to GE and installed the new map on my computer without incidents.

I had to rush out.

The larger DEM that Rick speaks of was included only the 3790 if I recall correctly...not sure about any other units. The larger DEM file gives better depth & resolution (the detail looks much more pronounced) on the 3790. The coverage is the same. I did try it on my 3490 (the successor to the 3790) which comes with the smaller DEM but I don't recall seeing much (if any) difference on that particular unit other than taking up ~2x the storage space. It could be that other units besides the 3790 (& other unknown (to me) units that may have included the larger DEM) are not coded to take advantage of the larger file.

Thanks Sergzak for refreshing our memories on the difference between the two files and confirming that I most likely never had it on my 3597. It is a feature I don't rely on very much (most of Iowa is flat as a pancake!), so I don't think I will try to find the larger file.

What things did Garmin Express install that you decided to delete? I prefer Map Updater too, but switched to Express a few map versions ago when Map Updater no longer handled the GMAPDEM.IMG file correctly on the 3597. As I remember though, Map Updater also installed other device updates whether you wanted them or not. So I am curious. What things were installed by Express that would not have been installed by Map Updater.

Yeah, remember when a 14.4 modem was awesome? Then 28.8... then 57.6 baud rate. Then 128 bps ISDN was just radical. 25Mbps is now common, with internet access providers pushing 75, 100 and even faster service.
