Do you realize that Garmin has not made the large full screen JCV file available for download? The file(s) your downloading are the files that a member obtained with the map update for his Nuvi and posted to a download site for our use if someone wanted it

You have to DL both parts. Upon extraction, it will look for part 2 of the .rar, and will 'join' them for the complete file.

It's pretty simple.

Thanks for the news!! I will

Thanks for the news!! I will update our devices in the next few days

some problems, mostly OK

As my 3790s have not seemed very happy with the USB ports on my primary daily use computer, I decided to forego updating my PC maps and use a newer computer for updating both 3790s this time.

So this was a brand spanking fresh Garmin Express install.

On first try all went well until the end of the map download phase. But total completion showing 50% and still displaying downloading file status, things ground to a halt. After more than twenty minutes with negligible activity (I reviewed both CPU consumption and I/O across all tasks, and cancelled the main non-Garmin tasks doing thing on the PC), I exited GE, with concern at the dire warning that this action might leave my GPS non-functional.

After rebooting the PC I tried again. Clearly GE knew it had already downloaded nearly all the update, as it showed me a considerably lower completion time estimate before starting, and moved on past the map download phase in about a minute, proceeding through to the end without further oddity. Unlike some others, my 3D files survived this update. However, the vehicle file for the vehicle actually currently displayed on the unit was corrupted (new time stamp, larger file size, not offered as an option when one went to the vehicle choice screen). Copying the original vehicle file in question from my backup fixed that problem--I did not even need to re-select it.

On to the second 3790. Happily GE knew it had already downloaded the map files, so it offered the shorter completion time estimate, and in fact beat it. On this second 3790 I use a different vehicle, and it survived unscathed.

As to those defending Garmin on the grounds that those of us with trouble must obviously have something different about our PC (true), and Garmin can't possibly test every configuration (also true), the rub is that I install software from multiple other sources, and I can only recall one (Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking) which routinely has more severe installation problems than my experience with Garmin map updates over the years (both map updater and GE).

I'm mostly a Garmin fan, but the smooth delivery of map updates to their customers rates higher quality attention from them than it gets, in my opinion.

Using GarminMapUpdater - a new faq

Using GarminMapUpdater to update maps on devices with the DEM Map with 3D terrain has been known to frequently/usually/always result in the loss or disabling of the DEM map file. I've just created a faq here to describe the issue and how to retrieve the DEM map. If you see any revisions needed in the faq, please let me know. Thanks.

If you are running the Chrome browser, the Garmin Communicator plugin is no longer supported by Chrome. This is used for all downloads from Garmin. Connect the GPS to the computer. Run Internet Explorer and install Garmin Communicator at this link. It should detect the GPS. Then try installing Garmin Express.

You need to download both parts. The original, large JCV has been compressed and "sliced" into two parts. Expansion/Extraction software (i.e. 7-Zip) will both extract and combine to make the one file. In 7-Zip, you select both parts for extraction and let it do it's thing. If you only extract part 1, it will give you an error that the file is "broken" or corrupted.

Good Luck!

It is impossible to make software user proof. There is always some system setting that someone will find to screw everything up. Sometimes it is having software that competes with other software like running several virus scanners at the same time. Sometimes it is just a security setting on the computer that blocks you. This is a bit inaccurate. The file I downloaded came from GPS Underground which may or may not have come from any member of this forum.

I am concerned that Garmin is being unresponsive to their loyal clients. They are starting to remind me of Palm and Blackberry (RIM) and we all know how well things are going for them. Garmin has great products but poor customer response can take down the best companies.

I installed maps on my old

I installed maps on my old unit 765 and got the large JCV file from it. Transferred it to my 1490. All good now and no need to wait for Garmin.

Obsolete? How old is your 2350LMT?

Hi Bill, How old is your 2350? I admit I'm going by your model number here and I think my 2595 is only a little newer than the 2350? Not trying to beat a dead horse here but my old 255W took a map update not too long ago with no issues and some of the folks who have also replied in this thread have reported a successful map update on units that were released quite a while ago. Just seems like something isn't right if the app is telling you the Nuvi is obsolete. Now my Dad's 250 I wouldn't be surprised if GE informed me as such! My my 0.02 worth!

Well, my Garmin 2350ZLMT is obsolete and can't load NA 2015.40. I was able to download and install the new map on my Mac and can see it in Garmin Map Manager and use it in Garmin Base Camp though. Moreover, I went to www.garmin.com/mapupdates to see if I could buy the software there. At that point a dialog said to use Garmin Express to determine which maps are compatible with my unit. I'd exhausted my options.

Sometimes the fault lies solely with the vendor

I can agree here but [respectfully] only to a certain degree. There are many users out there who use their system for years who don't personally/directly/intentionally do anything to screw it up. I don't fiddle with my system settings, don't poke around in the registry and tweek things, and don't delete Windows system folders randomly (or at all). Yet, both Map-Updater and Garmin Express have quit on me randomly and without warning over time and usually after a mandatory Garmin-required update.

Sometimes it really IS the vendor, regardless of the intelligence of the end user. The current firmware release number on my 2595 is proof of this and there are several features on it that worked fine when I first bought it that no longer work correctly or at all. (Traffic icon colors)

ChefDon,

Thanks for the confirmation.

Like you, I was a holdout who avoided Garmin Express and used GarminMapUpdater and WebUpdater for past map and other updates. Given the improvements to Garmin Express recently and the issue with the lost or renamed DEM map, I decided to try using Garmin Express for all map updates starting with the current map. It worked well for me. It may be time for you to consider Garmin Express as well, at least for your nuvi 3590 which has the DEM map. If so, be sure to click the upper right "cog" of Garmin Express to turn off most or all of the automatic features that have a default setting of being enabled.

Malware from this download attempt!

Reference: D3060170A_JCV - NA Fullscreen large JCV: Part 1 | Part 2
Just tried to download the large JCV file from this post for my 1490LMT. AVG went nuts and showed four different malware items attempting to come in with the download. Don't think I did anything wrong. Of course I had AVG take care of it and exited without attempting any further download from this link. So I'm now waiting like the rest of us for the large JCV file for 2015.40. I did contact Garmin and like others, they said, "sorry, you got what you are supposed to (small file) and we won't be giving you the large one." If anyone finds a "safe" DL for the large JCV, please post. Thanks.

Try GPS Underground for Large, Full-Screen, JCV

@GARYANDGWEN

I used GPS Underground to download the large, full-screen JCV file - http://is.gd/HGRbmL

The download is "D3060170A_JCV - NA Fullscreen large JCV" and was the third item down on the list of downloads on the linked page when I went there. It comes in two parts. Download both and when you extract the files in Part 1, the files in Part 2 will also be included.

I used "Free RAR Extract Frog" to extract the files.

It was slow to update

I had the update and on the bar was 3 hours but I don`t think that was the space of time for the total update. It works well.

This was a fun update for me

Was kind of looking forward to this update as our household recently switched to bundled fiberoptic service for our phone, internet, and TV. Previously we had been on Frontier DSL, which has been steadily getting slower and slower over the past couple of years.

All I can say is WOW, what a difference! Before I always used to update overnight since it took ~6 hours (I'm guessing, I was always asleep). Now, using MapUpdater (I'm one of those who won't install GE until I absolutely have to) the whole process took 16 minutes from start to finish. Amazing.

Thanks selfruler

Me too!

I had the same experience: Verizon DSL subscriber from back-in-the-day when it was considered latest and greatest and FAST! Like you, I always felt suspicious that it was getting slower over time, but blamed it on my aging XP laptop. I'd start the updates at night and go to bed because they'd take 4-6 hours min. Then I switched to Verizon FIOS: HOLY COW!!! Under an hour even on the old laptop! I borrowed a new laptop with USB 3.0 for this map update: time start to finish was approx. 40 mins. Probably would have been much faster if I hadn't been doing it during the first day of the release and during prime time when the Garmin servers were probably maxed. Pretty nice!

A USB 3.0 port won't gain much as both the input and outputs have to be the same. Your 2595 is a USB 2 so it would transfer somewhere around 54 Mbps. It also depends on the speed of the hard drive, the amount of computer resources allocated and the speed of the internal memory on the 2595.
