Speed Camera Alert

Hello all,
Just installed my POI red light/speed cameras file (Thank You POI Factory!). My question as I approach the camera is the warning speed. Being in Canada it comes up saying to slow down to 37 (I assume it's MPH) as the speed limit in the area is 60KMH. Coincidentally 37mph=60kmh give or take. Can I modify my file for km speed warnings? I've searched the site but didn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

It sounds as if you have your unit set to display MPH not KPH. Change the unit settings.

Welcome

Welcome to the site.

We usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Note that the Learn Button will give you access to two valuable reference pages -
the "Index" to all of the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) and the Glossary of Terms and Links.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.

Let us know how we can help you enjoy your GPS.

I will

double check but the units are definitely set to kmh as all the indicators speed & posted signs show up in kmh on the gps. I may try to reload the file I may have accidentally changed something.

You aren't doing any editing or conversion of the file are you? Running the file through EPE could be one culprit.

I haven't edited

the file or use the EPE. I'm starting to wonder if maybe when I loaded the file I didn't choose the correct unit don't recall seeing that. I'll check tonight when I get home.

GPS and POI Loader

You say the GPS is set to Km. Is the POI Loader software also set to metric?

I'm starting

to think that is where the issue may be. I'm going to check and report back.

Just an update

to this thread. Both my Garmin & the Loader are set to metric. I have installed the speed camera file and it still alerts me to slow down to 37kmh, the zone is actually a 60 zone. Not a huge deal as I know the speed limits just looking for some thoughts on this one.

strange

It's strange the Nuvi is converting to Imperial when both POI Loader and the Nuvi are set to Metric. Just for giggles, what country did you select when you first initialized the unit? If you didn't select a country where the standard measurements are metric, this may be the root cause.

Wrong country?

Box Car wrote:

Perhaps it was a US unit that was sold used or a refurb that did not receive a hard reset. Later the settings were changed to metric but the country is still US.

I'm clutching at a straw here as we don't know all the interactions between the setup and the configuration screens. There are many here using a different default country as their setup and are not reporting problems with speed cameras.

Spped cameras

Looking at POI Loader help even though the @ is not there. I believe the following applies and why the speed does not change using manual mode.Since a number is in each individual POIs.

Understanding Speed and Proximity Alert Information

POI Loader automatically scans .csv and .gpx data files for speed and proximity alert information.

You can also use Manual mode to specify default speed and proximity alert information as needed.

Speed Information

Speed information can be included in the file name or in the names of individual POIs within the file.

POI Loader determines speed information based on the following information, listed from highest to lowest priority:

Speed information included in the name of the individual Custom POI. For example, a POI named "SpeedZone@30" will have an alert speed of 30 regardless of the speed information specified in Manual mode or in the file name.

Speed information entered in Manual mode.

Speed information included in the file name. POI Loader interprets any numbers in the file name as speed information.

@

The @ is there in the POI Factory speed camera files. I use manual mode to load them and specify default zero. The nuvi correctly displays the different speed for each location.

number in filename?

John6t6, is there a number in the filename of the speed camera file when you load it?

Right the @ is there.Not

Right the @ is there. Not sure how I missed it.According to Poi Loader help. Manual mode will not over ride that.
Speed information included in the name of the individual Custom POI. For example, a POI named "SpeedZone@30" will have an alert speed of 30 regardless of the speed information specified in Manual mode or in the file name.

Typical POI

"R/Speed 70 - Glenmore & 52 SE @43.5","AB Calgary poi-factory Jan07 15"

The coordinates were left out by me.

There was another discussion on this in the past that I do not remember. There is a calculation going on for Canada which is why the speed is 43.5 . JM knows why this is.

The metric speed displayed on the nuvi would be 70 - just a text string. Perhaps one POI in the file has an incorrect text string for the speed. John6t6, what location displays this incorrect speed?

edit -

I just checked the entire file for any POIs including @37 . They all correctly had 60 in the text string. There are no hits for the text string Speed 37 . Whew - Canada sure has a lot of speed cameras!

Wow

A lot of responses, thanks. The unit was purchased new at Costco. Lots of great suggestions so I will check default country etc. It is very possible I may have overlooked a detail somewhere. I'll go through it again this weekend & see what I can find out.

Welcome to a fellow Canuck.

Depending on your location, you might want to download Rest Areas Ontario and Highway of Heroes and Tim Hortons. There are many others, and I'm sure over time you will find many.

You will find that this site is a very friendly and helpful site.

So here is

an example of one of the files. I noticed have some speeds after the address with @37.3 for example. A lot of the files just have question marks and look like this. R/Speed?? in the C column of the excel file. Wondering if this is just a case of missing info?

-113.61529 53.53169 R/Speed 60 - 170 St & 95 Ave @37.3 AB Edmonton poi-factory Mar11 15

Garmin Nuvi 2597lmt

This POI

This POI should display the speed as 60.

R/Speed is a combination red light and speed camera.

?? may mean a lack of info, but it could also have a specific purpose JM is aware of. For example, I reported a combination red light and speed camera in my area, including the speed limit. When it was posted it was R/Speed ??

dobs108 smile

@dobs108

Just as you suspected, ?? is shown for sites when the speed is not on file. (And it appears that the speed for your earlier report might have been overlooked.)

If you know the speed for any of the ?? sites, you can send it in and we'll get it added.

Jonathan (aka JM)

The county turned that camera off

Hi Jonathan!

It doesn't need to be corrected because it is no longer in the speed camera file. The county turned the speed feature off permanently(?) It is still there so if in the future they turn it on, I will make a new report.

Thanks for stopping in on this thread!

A few years ago, the POI-Factory's database program began converting kilometers to miles which is why there is a dual notation of 60 and 37.3. I believe the conversion routine is driven by the lat/lon coordinates.
