Just purchased a Nuvi 50LM ( US Lower 49 model ). From a number of online reviews, had an expectation that it would come preloaded with red light camera POIs. That was not the case.
After going back and revisiting the reviews claiming red light camera data came preloaded, discovered these reviews were from international locations, primarily Europe.
Be aware of regional differences to avoid false expectations.
All is not lost. You can still download and install the free trial Safety Cameras Garmin file if you wish--and I expect that the preloaded European files were also just the trial version as well rather than a full subscription:
or you can pay now or wait until you earn your windmill, and download and install The Factory's redlight and speed camera files, which also can be customized with an icon and audio alert:
There's a lot of useful information here but before getting to energetic, go through some of the Learning, Tutorials and FAQs regarding backing up your new nuvi, updating firmware and maps, etc., etc.
I suspect you are correct about the preloaded Garmin red light POIs being a trial version. Appreciate the other suggestions. Waiting on my windmill in order to download The Factory red light and speed camera files.
I have now had my 3790 for 3 years or so and the "TRIAL" version of RLC is still working.
Correct, the trial version of Garmin's Safety Camera POI file will work forever, but only with the paid subscription can the subscriber receive updates.
I agree ... but my experience when bringing a 3790 to Europe was that the crazy roads changed more than the RLCs and SpeedCams did
Welcome to the site.
We usually recommend the following.
There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.
To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.
So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.
Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials (as Craig has suggested above).
The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.
Let us know how we can help you enjoy your GPS.
