City Navigator 2015.30 North America has been released.
LETS USE THIS THREAD TO DISCUSS THIS MAP UPDATE AND NOT THE ONE THAT HAS BEEN OPEN FOR A FEW WEEKS MOSTLY MAKING JOKES ABOUT WHEN THE MAP UPDATE WOULD BE RELEASED. That old thread is called City Navigator North America NT 2015.30 and can be found at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/43223
All Set
Thanks guys, I decided to use the "re-install maps" option in Express after my last post just for kicks even though the map files were all there. Seems that time there was an update available for Express to ver 3.2.21. Initially had 3.2.16. That seems to have worked for whatever reason. Either re-install OR new version resolved it. Now showing all 3 installed with check marks in MyMaps. All files are still in the .System folder (including the Dxxxxxxx.img file, exact size as the gmapdem.img file at 623,591,424.) However just noticed that it was dated the same as the 2015.20 gmapdem.img file so must have been from the last update. I will most likely move it out to the PC just to save the space and make sure it dont kill anything else. Weird that it should not be there afterwards but apparently it does not break anything by being there. Thanks again for all the help!

I would move it out of the folder since there's no advantage to redundancy in this case.
I find it interesting that your DEM file size is precisely the same (not even differing by one byte) as mine from my backup of the unit's contents when I first got it when it was released. The same file size tells me it has never been updated by Garmin. This brings up the question, why is Garmin even touching that file in the first place? If it's on the unit and is the same version as the one they're pushing to the device, why even push it to the device in the first place? Why delete the one that's already on the unit (in my case, and not even replace it) or replace it with the exact same file with a different name on other units?

Updating on nuvi 855
Well, both GE and mapupdater told me I didn't have enough room on my 855. Previously mapupdater would work when GE wouldn't
I have the update on my pc now I want to transfer it my the nuvi. I also have backups of the nuvi on the main c:\ disk and a flash drive.
I see that some of you have successfully downloaded to a 855. How did you make room? Deleting unused files isn't sufficient. I already use an sd for the .jvc file.
Can I just copy the discimage file to the nuvi, or is cloning the files as described in the tutorials the fastest way?

My thought is that the nuvi 855 is the poster child and ideal candidate for doing map updates via cloning. I've done it with my 855 2-4 times now.

Use a good (Sandisk) 8GB SD card and follow the instructions exactly. The 8x5 series requires several more steps than other models but the procedure works well. You will be able to install all of North America and the large JCV file.
Dl'd new map
I dl'd the new map and two updates and it took about 55 min. from my PC to the Zumo 650.
Legs
Huh?
so confused.
School Zone Warnings
Just FYI for those interested: Not included in this map release for my Nuvi (2595) or this part of the U.S. (New England) Always hopeful the feature might appear but probably only a remote possibility that I'll see it at this point.

Thank you for the reply.
Rather than transferring the SD card, can I just copy the files to the nuvi?
At present I'm using the SD card for MP3 files. That's another good function of the 855 - it plays MP3 files. Most units don't.

If you installed the map update to computer only, you can use MapInstall to install the map to your 855. HOWEVER ... you will not get the necessary auxiliary files using this method ... no junction view, no voice recognition. If that is acceptable to you, then go ahead and do it that way.
The 8x5 is kind of an "orphan" in Garmin's nuvi lineup history. The best way to apply map updates to this unit and maintain complete functionality is to follow CraigW's advice.
Incidentally, there is no reason you can't have both map files and MP3 files on a SD card, assuming you have a large enough SD card. Also, if you carefully delete unnecessary voice and other files from internal storage, the full NA map will still fit in internal storage on the 855. The only thing you need the SD storage for is to add the full coverage Junction view file.

Previously I always have managed to install the new map using mapupdater. Unfortunately mapupdater, GE and mapinstaller refuse to admit I have sufficient room.
Perhaps it's because it's because I also an osm UK map installed If I could delete that map it free-up sufficient space. Anyone know how to identify osm data on the 855?

Perhaps it's because it's because I also an osm UK map installed If I could delete that map it free-up sufficient space. Anyone know how to identify osm data on the 855?
If memory serves, the nuvi's internal maps (besides the gmapbmap.img BaseMap) are limited to two maps:
gmapprom.img, which is most likely your most recent 855-installed City Navigator
gmapsupp.img, which is a 2nd map you added.
(A search on your 855 should show three .img files.)
If you have a osm UK map that you added, it's almost certainly the gmapsupp.img file. Before deleting the file, disable it by renaming it gmapsupp.img.disabled. Then safely disconnect the 855 from your PC, remove and replace the 855 battery to be safe, then go to the 855's Map Info page. If your osm UK map is gone after disabling it, you can delete the file (having kept a computer backup if you want it again later) or copy the file to the SD card. Note however, that if you move the osm UK map (gmapsupp.img) to the SD card, then you won't be able to use the clone technique to install the latest City Navigator to the SD card. This is because the 855 can only have one gmapsupp on the SD card.
The better alternative if you want to keep the osm UK map is to keep it (gmapsupp.img) in the nuvi, then do the clone technique to install all of the latest City Navigator NA NT to the SD card, plus the large JCV if desired. As alandb has said, the added features available to the 855 like voice recognition are only going to be functional if you clone—and it's also the only way to install the full all-of-North-America map to the 855 now.
PS—it may have been helpful if you had told us at the start that you had a large supplemental map in your 855. I had been wondering why the two Garmin update programs didn't offer you some small subset of North America. Now I know.

Going by my "Map Naming Conventions" post from WAY back in 2008, you can likely have many more maps on the unit than would appear. Remember that this post was written when the 7x0/7x5 series were in their heyday so the naming may not apply to today's units...one would have to try the different names and see if the maps were recognized.

Yes,
Yes, the newer Nuvi models that support maps stored in the Maps folder can be any name. Currently the maps I'm using on the 3597 are named 2015_30.img. This is the 2015.30 version of gmapprom.img.

Nuvi 855 update
I used GE to update my Nuvi 855 from 2014.4 to 2015.3 and it went very well. I had a very long (and productive) hand-holding session with CraigW several years ago. I kept notes and followed them successfully. I had previously deleted all non-american voices/help files, etc and was pleasantly surprised when the update did not re-install all of the voices, only the American voices. This left room for the complete North American maps.
I removed the small .jcv and replaced it with D3153140A (link in a previous post) and wanted to see if it works. In my location (Ottawa) not all junctions have a junction view. Today I must have picked the wrong intersection to test it because there was no split screen. Instead of driving up and down a 'series 400' highway and looking for a junction view, is there a way to test the junction view? I remember in the past someone posted a short route (in California?) to test it. I cannot find any reference to it. In other words, I would like to test my Nuvi 855 (in my house) to see if the large .jcv file is properly installed. It resides on my SD card and the small file is gone. I DO have lane assist. Does that mean I probably have Junction View as well?
If at first you don't succeed....redefine success
How to test Junction View on an 855 ...
Set a destination that is far away and will require several interstate maneuvers that will likely have junction views. Press Go, and when you are in navigation mode, press the top bar that shows the next turn. This will give you a list of turns. Press the one on top which will show a mini-map of the junction. Then press the down arrow to get the next turn. Keep repeating this until you see the "Lane Assist" button highlighted. Press this and you will see the junction view for that interchange.
If the Lane Assist button never highlights, your Junction View file is probably not working.

You can have Lane Assist and not have Junctions Views but a quick route you can enter to see if JV's are working is from downtown Ottawa (with your Nuvi in Simulation Mode and do a Where To - Cities - Ottawa) to Ottawa International Airport.
The route should take you northwest on Laurier Ave W to Nicholes St and then on to Hwy 417W. There is a Junction View for the next turn which reads "Take Exit 121A on right towards Airport/Bronson Ave". You can either have the Nuvi simulate the route or look at each turn as alanb explains above.
Another route you can simulate is from 3500 Dufferin Ave, North York, Ontario to Pearson International Airport. There are a number of Junction Views on that route.

Thanks T923347 and all...
I found 2 errors on my part for not having Junction View.
I added the 'big' .jcv file to the SD card but neglected to delete the Garmin version from the Nuvi, and I did not remove/replace the battery.
Correcting these two errors resulted in Junction View.
Thanks for the help.
Also...the latest version (2015.30) also has a lot more speed limit indications, even on residential streets. This is a great help since it shows up right beside your actual speed.

I don't think this sort of coverage improvement gets done simultaneously over the whole country.
What region have you seen these improvements in?
I'd love to see speed limits on lower level streets than currently implemented here in Albuquerque.

not enough space on a 3790LMT!!
I had trouble my first couple tries doing a backup for my 3790LMT (and I also replaced the battery recently), so only today attempted the map update.
As the 3790LMT is an 8Gbyte (less a little) memory model I was very unpleasantly surprised when Garmin Express announced that I lacked sufficient space for a full update, and would I like to select a region!!
I declined and looked around a little comparing my backups over the last couple of years to try to find potentially suspicious growing thigns
1. I notice that the G2S directory contains just a few files, but as each is several hundred Megabytes, the last one added has hurt, and none have been deleted. Do I need all three?
2. I notice that the JCV directory has three .jcv files, and as they run about 400 Megabytes, that adds up. Do I really need the older ones?
Neither is new nor terribly big, but it appears that I might be able to save some space by deleting Help and Voice data for languages not of current interest.
Can I safely do that?
Lastly, as many people have reported .dem files getting deleted in this update, I wonder if that may have been a measure intended to avoid my problem?

Delete the 2 oldest .jcv files, and try again.
It may be time for a hard reset to clear the crap from the unit.

No joy. I deleted not only those but "other language" help and voices, leaving a bit over 1 Gbyte of free space, but Garmin Express still declared I lacked enough space, and never populated the window which was supposed to give me a region choice.
I have an SSD boot drive on this machine, which at a mere 80 Gbytes is not comfortably excessive, so I was VERY unamused that that Garmin Express left over 4Gbytes of temporary files at:
C:\ProgramData\GARMIN\Core Update Service.
I guess I'll try the other updater tomorrow.
Apparently I failed to notice that my previous update failed, as the unit professes to have 2015.10 on it now.

Yes, that is what I plan to use. Thanks for the link--I downloaded a fresh copy, which turns out to be byte-for-byte identical to the one I downloaded February 8, 2014.
I was a paid-up Garmin Express hater, but some favorable user reports combined with my dread of getting left behind on the last melting iceberg to had preferring to use it. My notes suggest I had success using it for two 3790s in May 2014.

I was not updated
You are using the current version of GE aren't you? The problems you describe were fairly common at the last update cycle.
no I was not. I don't have GE set to run in background, and to my surprise it did not check for a new version when I ran it yesterday. Today, before trying again I clicked the gear, found I was running 3.2.13.0 and was offered a newer version. That download stalled, so I manually downloaded, what turned out to be 3.2.21.0
Another issue, which is probably relevant to the space on the 3790 LMT. My model was a refurb, which in first life probably was a European map model. In any case, sometime in 2012 when I checked for available updates the site told me I could install my European lifetime map update. Thinking it would be cool to have both, I tried doing so, but found I could have Euro, or US, but not both on the unit at the same time. Today I spent some time looking at size differences in backups from my wife's 3790LMT and mine, and used them to identify over a Gigabyte of files which appear to have been leftovers from my European map install. With the big ones erased, Windows thinks my Nuvi has 2.3 Gbytes of free space, so maybe an up-to-date copy of Garmin Express will be willing to do the update on my diet-reduced Nuvi.
Also I used the Windows disk space recovery tool to get back a lot of C: drive space, which currently shows 23 Gbytes free, so even with Garmin not asking where to put spare baggage I should be OK for the install.
However at the moment GE finds itself unable to connect to Garmin Services.
So I tried GarminMapUpdater, which still offered me my choice of Europe or US. I chose US and it moved on to download pretty promptly. It proceeded to completion apparently normally. Turning on the unit was normal, and the mymaps list of maps affirmed that I had 2015.30, but also that I no longer had the DEM map.
A superficial comparison of my backup before this update to current contents of my nuvi showed that I no longer had a 623,591,424 byte file name gmapdem.img, but that I had a new 623,591,424 byte file named D2248000B.IMG. As the exact file length match stretches credulity as to being coincidence, I tried a byte-wise comparison and found them to be identical. On a hunch, I just renamed the "new" file back to the previous name (using Windows Explorer with the Nuvi connected). That seemed to work, as on next turning on the Nuvi a check of mymaps listed the formerly missing DEM, and zooming the map view appropriately showed me local "3D" terrain at the expected scales.

Another Unit Updated!
Just updated the 2455LMT used on my motorcycle using Garmin Express. Today's update to 2015.3 took about 40 minutes total from the time I pressed the "Install All" button. This also included a couple of firmware updates, transferring favorites, vehicles, and updating the POI file.
Update done using an old laptop running a 2.2GHz B960 Intel with 4 GB of memory. No other big processes running. Didn't think that was to bad smile
No problems encountered and the unit appears to be working correctly. Garmin Express seems to be a stable way to do the updates on both our units.
Updated my 3597
So far so good... Took a long time to download, forgot about and went to bed. Unplugged it in the morning and all seems OK.

How many JCV files per map are available?
Of course, the 3760 gets a very limited split-screen JCV file (just 162 mb), so I am waiting for the complete full screen JCV file to be available. If it does not become available, I will be looking for someone who can provide a copy of the full split-screen JCV file.
Selfruler, how many JCV files are going around? For sure, one with the full image and other one with the split-screen image (162 mb). You've also mentioned a "full split-screen JCV file." So, that's a third one? How can identify it? Size, may be? Any GPS model?
I'd rather use the split-screen version. But of course, the more complete it, the better.
Thanks
JCV File List
North America Full Screen
US and Canada Full Screen
24xx/25xx Split Screen
13xx/14xx Lite
x0/x2 Split Screen (non-Photoreal)
North America Split Screen (non-Photoreal)
The one you want is the 24xx/25xx split screen file at roughly 500MB.

Just updated using GE. No problems.
Flawless
I updated using Garmin MapUpdater and as always, the process went flawlessly. My wife and I went to one of the wineries not too far away to test the update. Everything good, including the large Junction View.

The wet string worked, but it was tough soldering the connectors.
Switched to my secondary ISP (I have three at home) and it just worked.
