City Navigator 2015.30 North America has been released.

LETS USE THIS THREAD TO DISCUSS THIS MAP UPDATE AND NOT THE ONE THAT HAS BEEN OPEN FOR A FEW WEEKS MOSTLY MAKING JOKES ABOUT WHEN THE MAP UPDATE WOULD BE RELEASED. That old thread is called City Navigator North America NT 2015.30 and can be found at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/43223

As expected, jgermann has published the faq for that. idea

For most units, the factory-supplied GPS models will benefit the most—at the least loss of function to a user—by deleting voices in languages you don't speak. Each voice takes up 10-25MB on the nuvi 2460 and the GPS comes with nearly 70 voices. I keep all the English language voices and delete the others. The newer devices that use TTS3 voices have voice files even larger than those on soberbyker's 2460.

Must be an early release

Thanks, already got rid of all but the British and US English files, both voice and text.

Box, they won't let Comcast in to replace the wiring, which is what needs to be done. I'm not sure that saying they are restricting service by not allowing wiring replacement is going to fly, especially since service is available in the building. A reduction in quality does not equate to a restriction of service.

Done.

Updated both of my 2460's to 2015.30 via Garmin Express (GE) with no apparent problems. First one took a little over an hour d/l to both PC and the unit, second took about 30 minutes to "device only"

I have to say one thing though, I'm glad the time clock at work doesn't count minutes the way GE does 11 minutes to finish took 30 minutes.

I'm convinced all programs do that. Whether it's a countdown or a progress bar, it is *never* accurate smile

A letter from an attorney would make them justify their position of not allowing repairs/upgrades to the existing service. The real test is if you have an alternate service avaiable such as another cable company or FIOS and they blocked their installation.

Do you know if it is the internal or external wiring needing the update? My guess is it's the internal wiring and it would involve construction as the building feeders would have to be replaced.

I'm in Monopolyville. No FIOS, no alternatives to Comcast, and the building doesn't allow Dish or DirecTV (not surprising there).

After rebooting the nuvi and looking at the screen it appeared the 3D landscape was gone, no shaded contours. I went back to GE and selected the choice to reinstall the maps. The progress bar quickly went to about 75% then it started to download another file. When it completed, the shaded contours were back.

I noted that under Settings/Map & Vehicle/myMaps an additional map showed up after the reinstall. It is labeled Cnna - Na - Dem. This was the additional file it didn't get the first time around.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, it's been reported already although mostly with GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express. Your report of a repeat install to restore the DEM file is new though. Good to know.

One thing you may want to do is check your 3597 for a file starting with the letter D and ending in img which is exactly the size of the DEM img file. It may be a duplicate. Let us know if you see it.

Update stalled using GE

When using Garmin Express v3.2.21.0 on my Mac the update seemed to be going OK, but after downloading only ~4% it stalled. No network download activity. I noticed a process called Garmin Express Service using a great amount of CPU time. I forced this process and Garmin Express to quit, restarted GE, downloaded a little more of the update and then it stalled again. I then used Garmin Map Update to perform the update.

I have always used GE for updates and never before had any problems. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

express

I used Garmin express to download the update and install, on the first try it huckley bucked my gps a 1450lm so I re booted and tried again and it worked lo it took 15 min to download but it too about 2 hours to fix it all.

GE Worked Well!

I finally did the update for my Nuvi 2555LMT on a cloned SD card.
I noticed .....
- Process did not stall on GE as sometimes occurs
- Seemed to download and install faster
- My GSP seems to work smoother with 2Gb free as compared to 14Mb free on the previous setup.
- Standard JCV file updated/works as expected.

As I mentioned earlier, I also tried the full screen JCV file last week and did not like it. (works too far in advance, closes too soon, as much as .5 mi. BEFORE exit. Hardly ideal in heavy traffic situations.) The standard JCV file serves my needs perfectly.

I also downloaded with GE on both my units and found the process smoother and faster than previous downloads. I am not sure what JCV I have but have found it to display earlier than usual. Is this the new maps. Not sure if I like it better or not yet. I also notice the turns are stated earlier also, which i like.

If the popup Junction view only takes up half the screen then you have the standard file. Mine seems to pop up about .5 mi before the exit and stays in view until the exit is engaged ... then it pops back to the regular map view. I like this because we always see the overall route, current and future, before and entering the exit. This helps with planning when there's a lot of traffic going on around you ......

I think I'll wait for the spring update before I update again. Hopefully when the construction in Houston gets done the maps will get updated quickly. Not holding my breath, at least another year before the construction is mostly complete then another 2 years typically after that before the maps are updated. If they wait until all the construction is done, then you won't see it on a map update for at least 5 years. Uggg.

3490 LMT installed maps?

So what maps should show up now in the myMaps on the 3490? I am showing CN North America NT 2015.30 all, and CNNA-NA-DEM North America DEM. I thought there used to be a 3d something in there? I see a gmap3d.img file on the device. Is this correct?

Since I don't have a 3490, feel free to correct me.

My 3597 shows: Cnna-Na-DEM, CN North America NT 2015.30 3D, and CN North America NT 2015.30 ALL. This is the DEM terrain map, the 3D building and landmark map, and the street and POI map.

Garmin's web site indicates that the 3490 and 3597 share the same maps but it appears that the 3 bldg. map is not showing on SEB4's device. Is this correct? It seems wrong, although I'll once again say I have no 3490 to evaluate.

SEB4, what .img maps do you see in your 3490? Is there:

gmapbmap.img, the Basemap;
gmaptz.img, the Time Zone map;
gmapprom.img, the City Nav street and POI map;
gmapdem.img, the shaded terrain map; and
gmap3d.img, the building and landmark map?

If you have all 5 maps, then I do wonder if you're missing the display of the 3D bldg. and landmark map. At least that's what I expect if the 3490 does have the same maps as the 3597.

My gmap3d.img is 226,884 KB in size. Does this match yours? It does seem to me that if you remember a 3D map in past map versions that you may be missing the current 3D map being offered even though the file is there.

Two last things to check. In the folder containing these map files (.System, I expect), do you see any .img file starting with the letter D, something like Dxxxxxxx.img where x is a numeral? And finally, it appears on my 3597 that the gmap3d.img requires an unlock file. In addition to your large gmap3d.img file, is there a tiny gmap3d.unl file? If not, the missing unlock file may be the problem resulting in the loss of 3D bldgs. and landmarks on your GPS.

PS—Welcome to The Factory, SEB4.

Thanks! Been around here for a few yrs just finally registered. So I have all 5 of those maps and the 3d one is the same size as you mentioned. I also have the unlock file gmap3d.unl. There is a D2248000B.IMG file and it is exact same size as the gmapdem.img file. Any other ideas? Maybe rename the Dxxxxx file so its not recognized as an img file?

Hmm

Hmmmmm.

My first thought (unrelated to your problem) is that the D2248000B.IMG file should not be there at the end of the map update process. You could rename it to something like D2248000B.IMG.disabled and see how things work. If things countinue to work well, you could move the D file from your nuvi to a computer backup, thereby freeing up quite a bit of space on your 3490. Heck, maybe disabling or removing the D file may even let your nuvi show the 3D map. Stranger things have happened.

My 2nd thought (unless some other 3490 owner comes along and says we're wrong) is that your map update failed to complete as designed. The safest first thing to try is a hard reset.* If you have the time and a fast internet connection, you could try reinstalling the map update. One person who lost the DEM file on an initial update was able to get it installed after a 2nd map update. The final thought is to call Garmin Customer Support with your GPS USBed to your computer and let them try to "remote access" the device and see what's wrong.

There may also be something you could do with your device's xml file, but someone more knowledgeable will need to come along and make suggestions in this regard.

the D2248000B.IMG file should not be there at the end of the map update process.

Agreed. Rename the file Dxxxxxxx.img file as CraigW suggested. Having those two identical map files (although name differently) may be causing the unit to not see the proper gmap3d.img file. Two identical maps with different file names should not be present in the folder.

As a test, I'll experiment with my 3490 and copy the gmapdem.img file onto the unit and rename it D224800B.IMG to see if having both gmapdem.img along with D224800B.IMG there messes up or somehow disables the 3D map from operating properly. I'll post back in a bit...

...having both files in the .System folder has zero effect on my 3490 and the 3D map shows on the unit just fine, *however* note that I'm using the DEM file from my nuvi backup, performed when it was new & out-of-the-box. It has therefor never been updated as yours has. When I ran the map update a few days ago, it DELETED and never replaced my DEM file so I had to revert to my backup (which still works, BTW). I may try and re-run the map update to see if the DEM file gets updated rather than deleted.

FYI, the DEM map file from my original backup is 623,591,424 bytes. If you post your file size, be sure and post the size in bytes & NOT kilobytes.
