New Garmin 760LM settings for commercial van not truck. Help.

Hi. I purchased a 760Lm to replace my wonderful Nuvi 660 that never had any issue. Does anyone use the 760 for a commercial van not a truck. Here in NYC commercial vehicles are not allowed on commercial routes or parkways but 760 clearly stays away from many roads causing me to take longer routes but I never had this issue with Nuvi 660 in truck mode. I can't use it in car mode because it automaticaly throws me on parkways. Any help will be appreciated. Is there any settings that will help or any other gps that fit my criteria. Thanks in advance.

Dezl Series For Truckers

Unless the GPS has TRUCK as an option to set for vehicle it will take you on all roads, it's embedded in the firmware and can't be modified.

I'm almost 100% certain that the 6XX series was the last to offer the truck option, therefore your 760 will not prevent you from going on prohibited roads for commercial traffic.

The Dezl series is for truckers but far more expensive than the automitve series.

Which 760?

crazyguy, let us know if your 760LM is a nuvi 760 or a dezl 760LM.

I'm guessing that you have a dezl since the nuvi 7x0 series is quite ancient and back then, there were no LM models since it was necessary to buy a separate lifetime maps subscription. In my opinion, Garmin didn't fully think through the issues created by a new GPS model with the same model number as a very old device.

If your 760 is a dezl, you might find some answers in the owners manual:

There are some users here with trucker/RV devices and hopefully they'll be able to help you further.

Try Creating a Vehicle Profile

I suspect you are referring to the Dezl 760 trucking model not the old Nuvi 760. The Dezl 760 has a trucking friendly database built in which is updated during the map update process. Although you are not able to modify that database, you can create a “Profile” in the GPS for your van using its height, weight, length and width. The database then uses your profile to determine the best route based on known highway restrictions.

Although I never used my Dezl 760 in NYC, for the most part, I found the database to be reasonably accurate when creating routes for my oversize vehicle. It isn’t perfect though and I always pay attention to road signs and warnings.

Since I don’t drive a commercial vehicle, I traded the Dezl 760 for an RV 760 which I find more useful with my truck and large trailer. The units are similar but the RV model has a database which provides more information for non-commercial vehicles. It also routes via roads which are closed to commercial vehicles which I often use. The RV 760 won't be of much use to you though since you're commercial.
