Garmin discontinuing nuvi 3597?

I went to amazon to check the current prices on the NUVI 3597 and amazon said Garmin was discontinuing it.
Has anyone heard anything about this. They may be
coming out with something in the new 2015 line.

Yes

Yes, I've also seen the Amazon statement for several weeks now.

I did Google around the web and came across what appeared to be a very informed forum discussion where a responder stated that Garmin had been contacted and Garmin confirmed that no 3597s are being manufactured and as soon as the existing supply is gone, it'll officially be listed as Discontinued on Garmin's site as well. I can't confirm that any of this is correct but it makes sense to me.

I have looked around and the large supply of discounted manufacturer-refurbished 3597s seems to have evaporated and purchasing it straight from Garmin now includes a free shipping incentive, so I do believe Garmin will list it as discontinued soon.

Given the new line of Advanced Garmin models, it is reasonable to think that a new Prestige series may be due soon. This is a wild guess on my part. I didn't see any features on the new Advanced models that just came out that I wish I could have so it'll be interesting to see what features can be offered on a new Prestige model.

Software????

Garmin needs to be working on their software issues rather than their hardware.

There is probably no new "Prestige" model(Nuvi 3597) in our future. sad

I have spoken to a friend who is a distributor for Garmin products in Canada and they have been told that the recently announced 2014 Advanced Series will be the models replacing the Prestige series. The displays used on the 3597 were given an "end of life" build over a year ago. sad sad

Sad indeed.

Maybe Garmin finally succumbed to the cell phone industry with the power of their volume production to generate new hardware products with high-res screen and powerful processors at a fast pace and relatively inexpensively.

Viago and similar maybe the new "Prestige" series going forward. It is sad.

Discontinued NUVI 3597?

mad mad I just bought the 3597LMTHD a couple of months ago and not happy that they are going to discontinue it. How long will they continue the map and software updates?

My experience with older long-discontinued nuvi models leads me to believe that software updates will probably continue well after the 3597 is officially discontinued.

Map updates will likely continue as long and as often as map updates are offered to newer nuvi models.

Yeah

Yeah, I won't worry about not being able to update a 3597. I can still update the maps on all my Nuvi's although most of them have been discontinued for years and if I have enough SD cards laying around.

You'll eventually not get any new firmware updates but that's not always a bad thing smile and will probably be well in the future.

3597 prices going up.

It seems to happen with most Garmin models when they are discontinued. When retailers find out that a model is discontinued, they have some real bargain prices to unload their inventory. Then, as the shelf supply starts drying up, so do the bargain prices. The price will then start going back up, often close to to the MSRP as the supplies dwindle.

So those of you who took advantage of the $220 3597LMTHD refurb a few months back should be glad you pulled the trigger when you did. This model has as good of a reputation as any recent Garmin nuvi model. If Garmin really does not replace it with a new premium series, I think the 3597 will soon become scarce.

That said, my guess is that Garmin will eventually introduce a new premium automotive GPS device in the US market. Maybe it won't be called "Prestige" or even "nuvi". At some point, I look for them to offer an Android based automotive GPS in the US market.

Thanks, a great find, especially with free shipping.

I see that there is a review from a Craig but it's not from me.

The ad states that they won't have stock to ship until Sept 22 and when they run out, they're out—no backorders.

Given what I've learned about the new Advanced series that just came out, I was a quarter-tempted to buy one as a spare but think that I'll pass on this and go back to my 2460 if my current 3597 dies in the future.

I agree

Getting scarce for sure

Glad I bought mine when I did from Newegg. It's not listed there any more.

That's the feature I most want when I buy a new GPS.

Any other Garmin units with Hi-Res screen?

Are there any other Garmin units with the 800 x 480 pixels screen and magnetic mount like the 3597? Those are the best features of the 3597 IMO.

AFAIK, the 3597 is the only model Garmin has ever offered with the magnetic mount. I bought a second mount at BestBuy so I could easily move my 3597 between my 2 vehicles. I am glad I did, because finding the mount as a separate item will probably not be available for long. ALso, if you want a new or refurb 3597, you better get one while you can.

6 and 7-inch models

For me, mount is not really helpful because I have to use a dash friction pad to comply with California law (GPS can only be mounted on the down left 5-inch corner, where is impossible to install given the sloop of glass down there).

However, I think higher resolution helps. Newer models have to go 6-inch for that resolution.

Also, those new models have "Direct Access" that also looks interesting. Kind like Google's indoor navigation. And they can send / receive address from phone, which is also a big plus.

True, but these new models won't be as sharp as the 3597 since the pixel density of a 800x480 will drop as the screen dimensions go from a 5" diagonal to a 6 or 7.

gadget_man has reported that the screen quality of new advanced models, probably one with a 480x272 pixel display, is undesirable after having used a 5" 800x480 device like the 3597:

It's not so much the model at this point so much as it is the entire series. Granted, there was only one model in the series, but Garmin was really pushing the boundaries on looks and functionality for the prestige series and I find strange they decided to abandon it after less than a year (they announced it around the same time as the other 2013 line, but it wasn't available until about the end of Q1 in 2014, am I correct?). Also, the model - as far as I know - has had fantastic reviews.

And the C550 is over 8 years old.

A step backwards

Driver 38 wrote:

I'm used to models being discontinued but usually it is so better models can take its place. The 3597 has high build quality, great screen resolution, and the magnetic mount system for quick removal and reinstallation when parking.

I don't see anything in Garmin's lineup that I want now. That is the first time I have said that in the 7 years I have owned at least 4 models of Garmins.

Garmin is fighting to keep up with smartphone navigators. The 3597 is far better than my phone, that is what makes it a viable alternative and something I gladly bought.

.

Upgrading almost always results in a downgrade. My 3790 shows favorites on the screen using the older, more descriptive icon, along with showing of the favorite's text label on the screen as well. "Upgrading" to the 3490, I lost this great feature. Sure, some others were gained but I've REALLY grown quite tired of this.

Let me put it this way, my 3490 was the last GPS purchase I made. I don't see myself wanting anything "new" that Garmin is releasing. And no, I do NOT use my cell phone (iPhone 5) for any car navigation at all nor do I want to.

If Garmin wants to sell me something, they're NOT going to do it by pulling common "core" features out and adding unnecessary fluff.

Opposite for me , I 'm not a fan of 3D.

Hate 3D

I use the standard overhead view. I can't stand the 3D view.

My assumption is those of us that grew up on paper maps or early GPS units prefer the overhead view, and people that started off with 3D view prefer that mode.

Sooner or Later They All go Obsolete

IMO, it will be quite some time before Garmin releases a model with features that will cause me to replace the 3597. In my experience, it is the best Nuvi Garmin has produced to date.

Lately, I’ve been swapping it with my older GPSr’s in my other vehicles. I actually bought a second 3597 refurb to avoid the hassle.

3597

While I really like my 3597 and agree in general with all the accolades being given to it, there are a couple of things about it that really annoy me. The biggest one is the stupid large green generic icon symbols. The second is that Garmin removed the "recalculating" prompt when you go off route. And, even though they have made significant improvements in Trip Planner, I still prefer the "Custom Routes" engine on the older nuvis. In spite of these "flaws", I am still happy with the 3597 and plan to keep it for a long time.

That being said, the recalculating removal and the use of Trip Planner are not really just issues for the 3597.
