Garmin 2014 Nuvi Advanced Series.

Garmin has finally announced some 2014 models other than the Essentials Series: http://garmin.blogs.com/pr/2014/09/new-garmin-n%C3%BCvi-adva....

The article says these are available immediately, but so far the specific models are not listed on their online store ... will probably show up soon.

2014 Advanced Series models

Garmin has now listed the 2014 models on their shopping site: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/cOnTheRoad-cAutomotive-bBRAN...

Ah, interesting

Interesting. Thanks for the news.

As I reported in another thread this week, reports are surfacing that Garmin has confirmed that they've stopped producing the 3597 Prestige device and will mark the model as Discontinued as soon as existing stock is gone. Amazon already lists it as Discontinued.

With these new Advanced models, I expect we'll hear about a new Prestige model or two soon.

I didn't see anything to covet in these new models which is good for me. wink Wow, so now it appears that a 5" display is the small size! Note in these new Advanced models that there's quite a difference in number of pixels from low to high so you may want to look at the high- and low-pixel displays before deciding which 2014 Advanced model to buy if you're about to go shopping. I see another big difference, as expected with some 6" and 7" devices, in weight. I might worry if I had one of the heavier ones if I were using an air-vent mount and wonder about the ability of all mounts to be able to support these heavy nuvis.

.

I have to agree with you CraigW. While the FourSquare and Direct Access features sound mildly interesting, it's not enough to make me empty my wallet to replace the 3597.

I am interested to see if Garmin will have an announcement soon for the Prestige series. If they do, my guess is that it will be an Android device to distinguish it from the Advanced Series.

Besides that, I'm the sort that will wait for the new Advanced models to be offered as Factory refurbs twisted

480x800

As you mentioned in your earlier posts, none of the Advanced series 5" models have a 480 x 800 pixel screen like the 3597 does. I have found a good place to mount my 3597 and I don't think a larger screen would fit in that spot ... another reason to keep what I have for now.

By the way, did you notice that the battery life on the 2789 is "up to an hour"? Not surprising for a 7" model, but battery life is definitely getting shorter on the new models.

I too will probably never buy another new GPS. I have had great luck with the refurb's and can wait a while to save some $$$. I have been holding out for a Montana 650 to replace my Oregon handheld. While there have been a few refurb offerings in that series, I am still waiting for the prices to come down some more.

size screen

i think :
personally I think larger than 5 "is too bulky, I with my little nivi 350 3.5", I wonder if I spent 5 "rather than 4.3"

1- Preferably it will be in my LMT
2- Battery life, if I can Select A more 2hres I'd
like 4hres
3 - screen size, 4.3" or 5" i am not realy sure, (for battery life
4-Voice-activated navigation (operate device with spoken commands, i dont know if its effective

I

I bet all of these new models, even the 7" one, will be thiner and less "bulky" than a Nuvi 350.

It

It also appears these new models don't support 3D Buildings or Terrain. Just another reason I'm not looking to replace my 3597. smile

HERE Maps?

I was considering starting a "If you were the CEO of Garmin what business changes would you be making right now?" thread. On the top of my list would be the recommendation:

1. buying Mapquest, renaming it "Garmin Mapquest" then replacing NAVTEQ. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navteq - HERE maps would not be on my list). Plenty of business leveraging possibilities w/a Garmin Mapquest. So too a lot of other strategic business moves ...

What is becoming increasingly clear is what Garmin the company itself could use is a new team of investment bankers.

Interesting

And enticing. Thank you for posting.

Thanks

For the scoop Alan smile

At least in part, Mapquest uses TomTom maps (see copyright info in bottom right corner of their webpage). So it would be interesting to see if TomTom would have any part of Garmin using it's maps. On the other hand Mapquest looks like it's attempting to go with OpenStreetMaps data more and more as can be seen at http://open.mapquest.com/ and http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/MapQuest

so nice choice

for those people with 3597s

I have been hearing a lot about the 3597. Do you feel that the 3597 model is still the best of the Garmins.

compared to what?

Comparing the 3597 to what? As a unit, it is the best I have owned but it still has its flaws.

Ooh! Ooh! Shiny!

I want the new 2559LMT -- it includes a map of Bluetooth! I've never been there!

Well, that's what the ad copy says -- "All of the features of the nϋvi® 2539LMT, plus detailed maps of Europe and Bluetooth"

And WHY DON'T WE HAVE MAPS OF BLUETOOTH INCLUDED IN OUR LIFETIME MAPS SUBSCRIPTIONS??? WHERE'S THE MAP OF BLUETOOTH FOR MY 2460LMT???

... nah, I'm not sorry -- it's a cheap shot but someone's got to take it ... also tweeted to spread the meme ... that Oxford comma strikes again!

Bluetooth

I am thinking of going there on my next vacation.

Following the Trend

It appears the GPS Market - specifically theses new Garmin products are following the current "Technology Trends". Bigger screens (same as the newest Mobile Phones) and more Social Integration i.e. Four Square, Voice Activation and Mobile Phone Connectivety (Smart Link).

As someone that is 60 years old, I am starting to appreciate the bigger screens in Tech these days lol.
I am not sure about the Voice Activation, as it still means "learning" specific commands because they do not use Natural Language yet.

As usual new Technology is always interesting to follow.

I've been a good boy this year,

think Santa would delight me with a new 2599 under the Christmas Tree this year. I agree with Quebec001, above. Anything larger than 5 inches is too bulky.

For those headed to Bluetooth, be advised the halitosis among the native population there is nearly unbearable.

Good timing for new models

I'm considering replacing a Nuvi 650 with a 3597, but I'll see what the new models have to offer.

--
Steve - 2 Nuvi 3597

.

And once again, I'm not really interested. For one, I doubt that the spot my current nuvi is mounted in (on the dash in a custom-built mount, at the A pillar) would accept anything larger than my 3490's 4.3" screen size. They are simply getting too big for my '94 Mustang GT.

For another, nothing seems to be compelling me to purchase anything new because every single time I have, I've lost features that I use in the "upgrade" process. rolleyes

Well, until you've told your GPS where you want to go simply by speaking an address, you haven't yet lived. Just say "Voice Command" and "New Route", and tell it the address. It has a very accurate recognition engine. And the 7" screen on the 2797LMT is a thing of beauty.

Some okay features

There appear to be some okay features which are added. Nothing appears exciting enough to upgrade.

Things like upgrades into voice recognition would be nice, but companies don't like acknowledging that the older technology had room for improvement.

inside merory

Another thing for my future nuvi! I'll probably do a search for the size of the internal memory, too small, no room for the update

1- price
2- LMT
3- No more 5"
4- inside memory
5- battery ?
6- vocal command? I am not sure if is working well
7- ?

I would like a 17 incher

I would like a 17 incher attached to my Tesla. Not really.

My 3790LMT is great but wish it was a 7 incher.

POCKET

how do you put a gps 7 "in the pocket of your shirt when you go into a restaurant or you walked on the street

if is too big in car (you are not one alper) windows is too obstrued?

You mount it on the center consol

quebec001 wrote:

And have your passenger watch it for you while you keep your eyes on the road. And the if it's a she, she can put it in her handbag.

At least that's what we do with the 5" and it would work for the 7" as well.

When walking on the street it I use my 7" tablet some and that is a little too noticeable....

Edit: O, or the man can carry a "Man handbag" grin exclaim laugh out loud

ALL GPS IS GOOD so some have big price, and some have more option

If you compar 3590 and 3597

3590 have more option AND battey is better.

So 3597 battey is not bad, 90% of gps is equal at 3597 gps

As has been reported here many times the refurbs are just as good as a new unit, and in virtually all cases you will not be able to tell the difference between them. In addition they come with the exact same 1 year warranty as a new unit so about the only difference is the extra money that remains in your pocket after the purchase. smile

It's because of the case which gives you a sightly bigger visible screen (top to bottom) and is slightly less heavy. The major difference is that the 3597 comes with HD traffic Whether that's enough to justify the price difference is up to the purchaser.

About the only difference in options between the 2 units is Photo navigation support on the 3790. The "upcoming points of interest along route" difference, shown on the Garmin website comparison is an error as the 3597 also has this feature. Also I think the Guidance 3 comments for the 3590 may have been an important difference over other "advanced" 2013 models but I suspect the "prestige" 3597 has the same feature or an updated one. You can never tell with Garmin as they are always changing the name of traffic and guidance items.
