Smart-Phone Link wants to send me to Virginia for Restaurants in California

Planned to meet a couple of my buddies for lunch at Trellis in nearby Menlo Park, CA. Fired up Google Map on my MotoX, found the restaurant without incident. Using “share” via SamrtPhone Link to send the coordinates to my 3597, I was amused to find that the SmartPhone Link is ready to send me to a location in Merchant Square, Colonial Williamsburg, VA. Good thing the distance is just a tad over my driving tolerance.

Tried a couple of restaurants nearby just for kicks. Smart Link wants to send me to: Sultana in the State of Washington; McDonald's in Decalb, IL.

Found SmartPhone link is also having difficulties with Google Map's street addresses. Other places such as Stanford University, City of Palo Alto showed up correctly.

Quality Control

Don't blame it. I've eaten in California.

Merchant's Square has some very good restaurants. smile

.

That's it then. The Smart-Link really did not like my choices of restaurants and offered its own recommendations. smile

Have to make an effort to visit Colonial Williamsburg again one of these days and some of the good restaurants in Merchants Square of course. smile

.

You chose... poorly.

Very smart!

I'd choose VA over CA any day.

"CA"?

Sounds like you might have typed "VA" instead of "CA". Easy to do.

I did not have to specify the name of the state. Just typed in the name of the restaurant. Google Map knows where I am, found and showed the restaurant correctly on the map. The Smart-Link definitely transcribed the Google coordinates to a different location.

It has been fun in any case.

Google Maps issue

Using Send To from Google Maps to Smartphone Link has been broken ever since Google Maps V7.

The Garmin Knowledge Base article How can I send a location from Smartphone Link to my nuvi? documents the new search method.

Back in the summer of '13, Google introduced a change to Google Maps that broke sending locations to Smartphone Link. Garmin then released Smartphone Link 1.5 as a fix. This was discussed here at POI Factory - http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40596

I found in my case that Smartphone Link thought some local Toronto-area stores were located in Manhattan or L.A. See the Smartphone Link Update 1.5 thread for details.

Williamsburg restaurants?

Hey, there are some mighty fine restaurants in our Williamsburg VA area.

Of course, not all of them are good. And the bad ones don't last through the winter, because most of the patrons then would be locals and bad news travels fast.

FYI - there is a "Trellis" restaurant here.

Metricman, I think you have identified why the SmartPhone Link wanted to take me to Williamsburg.

Took a closer look at the information provided by the SmartPhone Link. The address in Williamsburg that it would like to take me to is: 403 West Duke of Gloucester St, Merchants Square, Williamsburg. This is exactly the address for Trellis (Williamsburg)!

Somehow, the SmartPhone Link must have lost my location and is not able to use the coordinates provided by Google Map. It must have created its own using the name of the Business with a default reference location. In my case, it decided the best fit is Trellis, Williamsburg.

Trellis, Williamsburg looks like a fine place to dine, http: // www.thetrellis.com/. This could be one additional excuse for me to persuade my wife for us to take a vacation back east. We have some friends over there that we have not seen for a long time.

Trellis, Menlo Park is not bad either. http: // trellisrestaurant.com/. I did lunch there with my buddies yesterday and had an enjoyable time.

Google Maps and Smartphone Link

Smartphone link was updated recently on my phone. I just tried sending from Google Maps on my Android phone.

1) Searched for Elk Country Visitor Center in Google Maps on my HTC One-X.
2) Share
3) Selected Smartphone Link and pressed Send

Looks like it will take me to the correct location when I preview the route in the 3490.
