Problems finding current.gpx file in C550

Hi,

I just got a C550 and I have an empty garmin/gpx directory. I have created a few favorites and would like to bring them into my PC but the gpx directory is empty and current.gpx is nowhere to be found. I found some discussions on the forums indicating that this has happened to some people and the solution posted was to turn the unit on, let it acquire position, maybe select a waypoint to go to from within the favorites and plug the USB without shutting the unit down. I will try this this afternoon but it seems like a lot of work and I can read int he forums that most people just plug and get this file without so much trouble. Anyone had this experience out there that can comment? BTW, I talked to garmin via email and they really weren't much help.

Thanks,
Chris

I think this behaviour varies a bit with the firmware version. It does seem related to the unit having recently had a satellite fix. My pet theory is that is something to do with it knowing the correct time - so that it doesn't write a CURRENT.GPX with a daft time stamp.

Of course, knowing the correct time is definitely related to having had a good satellite fix...

Maybe try letting it get a fix, then plug the USB in and see if that does help...

Alternatively, the C5xx supports the older Garmin USB GPS protocol (this is different to it appearing as a Mass-storage device). To enter this mode, hold your finger on the time for 6 or 7 seconds until it enters diagnostics and then plug in the USB. You may be prompted for drivers at this point.

In this mode, a program such as EASYGPS may be able to access your favourites.

Thanks Hornbyp. I was able

Thanks Hornbyp. I was able to get my GPS to acquire satellites in my office and then I connected to USB. Sure enough, current.gpx file is now there. Simple enough. What is frustrating is that I spent a week exchanging emails with Garmin and they never suggested this, but then I guess not many people are interested in reading the current.gpx file.

But it is working now.

Thanks,
Chris

P.D. I'd like to expand on my findings here in case someone has this same problems. I connected my unit again to get the current.gpx file and no file was present. Then I discovered that if you turn the unit on and then connect it to the USB I had a current.gpx file, even if the unit didn't acquire any satellites. I had always connected to USB while the unit was off and never got the current.gpx file. My hypothesis now is that the unit writes the current.gpx file when you turn it on and erases it when it is turned off. When the unit is connected without turning it on before connecting the current.gpx file is not there.

Thanks for the tips. My

Thanks for the tips. My situation with the c550 is further complicated its failing to remain ON when not plugged in. The unit works fine as long as it is connected to my car's cigarette lighter socket, but the moment I disconnect it turns OFF. So how can I power it ON before hooking it to my laptop to retrieve the .gpx file from it at all? Is there a hub unit that lets me connect the c550 to both the car and my laptop at the same time?

A new battery?

Would replacing the battery help?
