This could be an issue that you can't fix easily tonight that may magically resolve itself in a day or two. You still have the tiny default JCV file that came with your map update to your nuvi 1450 to use in the meantime, right?

Aah, a voice of reason, perhaps. I'll sit tight for a few days and see if this anomaly resolves itself. Or, I'll reboot right now and see if anything changes.

Garmin Express 3.2.17.0 problems

Used Garmin Express and encountered 2 problems. First it said I didn't have room to download all of North America on my 2460 so I selected Southern States and Mexico and then it downloaded. Second problem was the program hung up with no activity after the map was downloaded and was almost complete installing to my 2460. I then aborted and restarted my 2460 and it showed 2015.20 Southern States was installed. All appeared okay.

I now have restarted Garmin Express and selected all of North America and it is downloading without complaining about a lack of space so I'll see how it goes this time.

Doesn't

telecomdigest2 wrote:

Doesn't happen with a map update. There will be road changes, additions, deletions, POI changes, additions, deletions, plus other differences between the last map up date and this one. The list would be far to long to be of much value to most people. In addition, the maps come from a company called Here (formally Navteq) so they would need to create any change list which AFAIK they don't.

GE dowload

Just loaded 2015.20 to both 3597 and computer. No problems and JV, 3D and Dem functions are still working. However, I had been reading mail, blogs, etc and then fired up GE to do the install I found that the initial download was 75% complete!! As far as I know I had not asked to start the installation, anybody else seen this?
BTW, I had the Nuvi hooked to the computer to do a backup while I did the other things, USB 2 is slooooow.

Express Issues - Install to PC only

Installed with no problems to my 2595 in 50 minutes.

Forgot to specify "Device and PC" so ran "PC only" after. It had 10 of a total 20 minutes remaining when I went to bed. This morning it still showed 10 minutes remaining.

Restarted and it appeared hung. Rebooted the PC, tried again and it completed in about a minute. 2015.20 maps look good in both BaseCamp and MapSource. Hmmmm...

GarminExpress, nope...

Just tried GarminExpress and it errored out immediately with a statement that it didn't know where to put the update (I selected "device only") and that I should contact support. Fired up the old GarminUpdater and it's running now with just minutes remaining.

update

Took plunge yesterday. Using Garmin Map Updater, it took over 6-hours to download the update for my 3597 and the computer over my supposedly 20Mb cable.

I used to wait for a couple of weeks after the update is available and typically it takes less than 2 hours total.

Updated my 2597 today use the files that were already downloaded. It took only a few minutes to download and some 20 min or so to update the 2597. Updated my good old 260 too. Maybe some small files were downloaded as it took only a few minutes. But it took over an hour to transfer the US+Canada map to the 260 over USB1.1

Updated my 3590

I used GE and had no problems. Everything went smoothly. I started the update at 2:00 and went out to lunch. When I came back a couple of hours later, it let me know that it still had 51 minutes to go. Checked everything out and it seems to be working fine. I did not have to rename the gmapdem file. It downloaded everything the way it was supposed to.

Glad

Glad that GE worked good for you. It does appear that Garmin may finally be getting the bugs out of it.

If I recall correctly, the DEM file renaming issue only happened if you were using Garmin's MapUpdater and not when using Garmin Express.

I am downloading to my Gateway desktop computer first, then I will try my Garmin Nuvi 350. I do have a micro SD card in an SD adapter for more memory. Do have to do anything special to get the entire United States map on the memory card or will Garmin Express do that automatically?

I just had Frontier Communications, my internet service provide, come out and install a new modem/router and double my internet speed. It went from 6 to 12 Mbps. While it is not very impressive to those of you that are fortunate enough to have cable, for us DSL people like me, this is a nice improvement!

Clone is the answer

The nuvi 350 will not be given the map-update-to-SD option:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

so you will need to use alandb's cloning method--or you can install the map to your computer for use with MapSource and BaseCamp, then use MapInstall to load the map from your computer to your nuvi/SD. Both methods can be found in this site's faqs.

If you don't want to use the clone method, this should help:

Yes, many have

shrifty wrote:

Yes, GarminMapUpdater (v3.3.3 for PCs) works well. It's the same version as was available with the previous map update so if you keep a copy of GMU on your computer, use it rather than feeling a need to redownload it again.

The only issue with GMU (which isn't a problem with Garmin Express) is that for the nuvi models that have a digital elevation map (DEM), you will need to go into your nuvi after completing the update and rename one file. Check the past page or two of this thread for more info.

Thanks :)

Thanks for the notice. I am currently using a PC that does not have GE on, and for one reason or another is not able to install. It states an error that the previous version cannot be uninstalled, and I am unable to locate any remnants of it. I've tried using a few programs to clean up the registry, and even did a few manual searches for any pieces of it but unable to do so.

I'll update with the Map Updater when I'm off from work.

Streetpilot C340 Nuvi 2595 LMT

nuvi 3xx can't support full NA map as one file.

Jim1348 wrote:

The main problem with the nuvi 3xx series is that there is a maximum file size limit of 2 GB. The full NA map is larger than 2 GB. So you will need to install a smaller region to internal memory and install the remaning regions of NA to the SD card as a supplemental map.

Since you already downloaded the full NA map to your computer, the simplest way to install the split map regions to your unit and SD card is with Garmins's MapInstall program.

Learned something

I learned that by downloading and installing the new map to the 3597 first, that GE does not D/L again for the 660. I just unplugged the 3597 and plugged in the 660. After GE identified a new unit, it just went directly to installing the lower 48 to the 660 (with the usual prompts, of course).

Although the map is smaller, it does take longer for the 660 to get updated, apparently due to the faster electronics in the 3597.

660 uses USB 1 connection speed.

Instead of using the 660 to connect, I store maps on SD card, that I plug into a USB2 or USB3 port...

When I used to use the 660 for the upgrade it always took over an hour to be finished...

Now I'm done in less than 20 min, including the 3 file renames that has to be done afterward...

I also cycle between 2 SD cards, so I'm never without a backup set of maps.... The most current, and the last version (on the 'Backup' SD Card).

Success

I downloaded the new mapset last night and I must say this was the quickest download/install procedure thus far.

11 minutes to download US & Canada using Map Updater V 3.3.3 on a 30 Mbps connection and then a whopping 40 seconds to install using my 3.0 media reader!

I to must thank Alandb for kindly sharing this quick and efficient procedure with all of us. smile

Yes, "Electronics" control the speed of the USB port, not the mechanical connector. The cord's physical characteristics also control the speed.

Well, not having a SD card reader puts a damper on that. It would make my 660 be able to hold the full map though.

BUT, is it worth it???

The 660 is a "backup only" unit now, so springing for a SD card and reader is a low priority for me. A map install has minimal affect on anything else that is running on the PC.

Maybe on my next motherboard upgrade, I'll buy a new floppy disk drive that has all the different SD card slots built in. If the U.S. map keeps growing with new roads and all the built-in POIs (POIs not always accurate) and the 3597 runs out of memory, then it's a new GPS or a SD card. But that will be a while though. I use the 3597 more for Traffic Conditions going to or from work, way more than anything else. So, updated maps are only needed for vacations, etc.
