The way I understood the term was that the splash screen was full screen and showed up during a System startup.
I Googled splash screen and see that the term also includes a partial screen image that is presented when a program starts up.
Back when I was using Microsoft Visual Basic to create programs I used a “Text Box”, or a reduced Window with an embedded image, to display for a short time before the program started, but the phrase “splash screen” does not appear in my manual.
Otherwise I have changed the splash screens that show when a Windows system is starting up and have made several different splash screens for my Garmins that display during the two startup stages and when they are connected to a computer. So my mental image of a splash screen was stuck on those types.
So I needed to catch up with the broader usage of the term.
I guess I'm so conditioned from the last few map updates to expect misc. initial glitches with Garmin Express that I have tuned out the offerings presented on the screens. It's different with Map Updater where it's one of the first questions you are asked.

Just updated to 2015.10 on my Nuvi 765T and 760 last week before a 1,000 mi road trip from San Diego to Monterrey area and back... now I see 2015.20 is out! No apparent problems, so will be updating again soon.

I just installed 2015.20 on a five-year-old Nuvi 1450 that up to this point has performed flawlessly. The first (and only, so far) time I've it since the upgrade, I've noticed two problems:
1. The current speed indicator on the lower right of the screen has stopped working. It gets to some random number and stays there, regardless of my changing speed. If I tap the speed icon, the next screen shows the correct, changing speed. When I go back to the navigation screen, the speed indicator on the lower right shows the updated speed but then stays at that number.
2. The expected time of arrival display shows the direction I'm headed instead of the time of arrival. If I tap that icon, the next display shows that I've correctly chosen the time of arrival as the desired option. When I go back from that screen to the navigation screen, the time of arrival in now displayed.
Up until this update, I've not seen these problems. I'm tempted to go back to 2015.10 and see if they persist. Maybe my 1450 is just showing its age.
-- "No misfortune is so bad that whining about it won't make it worse."
I haven't even installed the last map update. I "may" install this one but I'd hate to screw up my old 760.
Perhaps you could put another 4 or 8 gig SD card in the 760 and install the new maps on that? You could then switch back to the old card if there should be a problem of some sort. SD cards are cheap as dirt now, especially the smaller(?) ones.

Well... Just had to delete GE because it is locking up on the splash screen and will not go further.
Now the new version 3.2.17 will not make it past there either.. This is on Win 7 Pro
Finally got it to work and downloading it now.
Not sure what you mean – there are two splash screens associated with a Garmin device – one shows during the “pre-boot” stage and another during the stage when the firmware is loading. The second splash screen stays on the device when the device is connected to a computer and stays there for the duration of the connection. There is nowhere “further” for GE to go on that screen.

Yes it was the preboot "logo"
The same is happening on my PC (Win 7 Pro 64bit). At first I thought it froze. I uninstalled and installed the GE again but the same type behavior repeated. Then I noticed that eventually it started. It just takes extremely long for such small program. I haven't timed it but it takes more than 45 seconds for it to open. During that time the splash screen is on.

Looks to me like your garmin was not booting all the way up to “PC Mode”.
The device pre-boot splash screen image is usually the word “Garmin” in large letters and nothing else.
The second device splash screen image varies depending on model and also whether a custom image has been set. It usually has more wording than the pre-boot splash screen.
When the device is connected to a computer by USB cable, the second splash screen should include the image mentioned above for that stage, plus an image of a device connected via a cable to a computer.
If your device is not booting past the pre-boot splash screen, Garmin Express is not the problem something else is preventing your device from booting fully up and making a “PC connection”.
Try getting your Garmin connected in PC mode before you open GE.
I have a 2450 Nuvi. I thought it had a card problem but the problem was I needed to turn the unit on before I connected it to the computer. It doesn't have to go through the entire boot up, just start turning on, and the card worked fine.
Maybe you need to turn your unit on before you connect it to the PC.
I don't have issue with my GPS not connecting or similar. The issue is that the GE doesn't want to start. In fact it takes for ever. On my home computer the GE logo stays on for 45 seconds or longer before the program starts. At first I thought it froze. Photoshop loads 5 times faster than GE.
And this is happening only on first run. If I close GE and restart it, it is as fast as it used to be. And I don't have GE running in background. Clicking on X closes the program entirely.

I see that you have a nuvi 765T as well as the two 8x5s. If your 765T has lifetime updates, the large JCV file that comes with each map update for the 765T is the "large JCV" that your two 8x5s need. This can save you the need to spend the time downloading the large JCV file.
I wish that the 765t had the lifetime updates (it came with my Volvo) but my 885t does and it has the smaller file.. I prefer the full screen JVC pictures of the off ramps better.. And my mothers 880 looks better with the larger pictures for her weak vision..
Interesting, but I am not seeing that CN 2015.20 is available as an update. I have a Montana 600 and a GPSMAP60CSx, both with Lifetime Maps, and neither shows up as a map update being available. I still have and use both a 760 and 765T, on both of which I have lifetime maps and just updated them to 2015.20 using GE. No problems except that on the first try with the 765 it gave an error about not being able to validate the subscription, but with an option to retry. The second attempt went through and it completed successfully. I agree these older units are the best - the newer ones, in spite of new features like being voice activated, seem to be missing one or more of the features I love and depend on in the 76x series.

I noticed recently that 2015.2 changed some routing rules for the better. One particular trip I make use to send me on a route that was really out of the way so I would ignore it and let it recalculate. Now with 2015.2 it actually chooses the better route. I have a 765T which does not learn routes so it is apparently in the map.
I've also noted the same over the years with routing algorithms varying from one map set to another. Before going on a long trip, I always do a simulation with the unit and add a via or two if necessary

On my main desk top and my laptop, I have the newest map, NT 2015.20 installed. The BaseCamp map will show street names when zoomed in close enough. On a standby computer, the street names will not show up until I click on the City Navigator North America NT 2015.1 in 'maps' in task bar. I downloaded the 2015.2 map again only to computer and the same thing, no street names. I think I have every thing updated.
What am I doing wrong?

No problems except that on the first try with the 765 it gave an error about not being able to validate the subscription, but with an option to retry. The second attempt went through and it completed successfully. I agree these older units are the best - the newer ones, in spite of new features like being voice activated, seem to be missing one or more of the features I love and depend on in the 76x series.

Routing Change
I noticed recently that 2015.2 changed some routing rules for the better. One particular trip I make use to send me on a route that was really out of the way so I would ignore it and let it recalculate. Now with 2015.2 it actually chooses the better route. I have a 765T which does not learn routes so it is apparently in the map.
I support the right to keep and arm bears.
Never good to be first
Never good to be first because its often the bleeding edge.
@ Aardvark
I've also noted the same over the years with routing algorithms varying from one map set to another. Before going on a long trip, I always do a simulation with the unit and add a via or two if necessary

Map on computer
On my main desk top and my laptop, I have the newest map, NT 2015.20 installed. The BaseCamp map will show street names when zoomed in close enough. On a standby computer, the street names will not show up until I click on the City Navigator North America NT 2015.1 in 'maps' in task bar. I downloaded the 2015.2 map again only to computer and the same thing, no street names. I think I have every thing updated.

Using Garmin software and expecting it to actually work properly:)
Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!
Less 3D with 3597
Updated my 3490 and 3597 with GE a few days ago. The 3490 seems fine, but my 3597 appears to show less 3D info while in the downtown Toronto area.
