Express updater - "Cannot authenticate maps" error
Tried Express updater for the first time to update to 2013.40. 10 hours to download (I'm in the country), uploaded to GPS, now GPS boots with "Cannot authenticate maps" error, and shows no detailed map info.
Tried re-installing, same result.
Went back to MapInstall, it thinks 2013.40 is already installed and won't do anything with it (delete would be nice).
Seeing if I can add 2013.30 back in so I at least have something for tomorrow while I wait for GARMIN Tech Support to answer e-mail.
Also, under Express Updater, did not see an option to install to computer and GPS, it went right to updating GPS. So, Basecamp doesn't see the 2013.40 update either.

Anyone see the SD option with an 885T? It doesn't look to be compatible and the option doesn't pop up.

Anyone see the SD option with an 885T? It doesn't look to be compatible and the option doesn't pop up.
Garmin Express and GarminMapUpdater do not offer the map install to SD option for these models. See Garmin FAQ here: Can I load maps directly to SD card? Also see the new POI Factory FAQ here: Garmin Maps | Cloning method. Install a map update dirctly to SD card.

Haven't tried maps, but one thing I can tell you is that they're significantly larger in size.
2013 Downloading to nuvi 855
I tried to load 2013.4 into my nuvi 855 using webupdater. It immediately switched me to Garmin Express. Some posters had reported no trouble with GE, so I proceeded to down load it. On running GE it immediately told me that I had insufficient room for the complete maps and please select which regions to install.
Not knowing which regions had changed I downloaded the map to my laptop only. This way I could examine the map and decide what if anything would be useful to me. The download took about 3 hours but installed correctly and could be used in BaseCamp.
I logged onto the Garmin site and using GarminMapUpdater downloaded the 2013.4. Surprisingly it made no comment on space requirements but immediately began the download. I asked for it to download to device only. Went to bed and left it running.
Come morning it had successfully completed the download. Everything seems fine on the nuvi. Shows Alaska, Canada, US and Mexico. I could only find two folders that had changed. Namely jcv and GPX. Also still have my OSM map of the UK, on the nuvi. All maps are on the nuvi memory card. The other card is full of music.
nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.
I downloaded the new map
I downloaded the new map with Garmin Express and it went smoooth. Later I got an empty pop up window from Garmin Express on the screen. I could click on the X in the top right corner but it didn't go away. I ended up uninstalling it from my computer.

Speed limit in Ontario Canada
Still no speed limit showing for the streets in GTA (Greater Toronto Area) except for the 400 series highways. Milton area was covered in last update. In the new update I noticed speed sign showing on Hamilton streets as well.

Easy update to 2013.40
I used MapUpdater 3.2.2 to download to PC only. Took 2 1/2 hours.(rural MS) No problem. Started MapInstall and put all of Canada and US on my SD card. I have a Zumo 550 so I pulled the SD card from the GPS and inserted it into the PC slot. Much faster this way as opposed to being in the GPS. No problem. Copied the SD with the maps on it to a backup SD card (16 GB). No problem. Tested both SD cards. Everything is great with me. All this on a Win 7 64 bit machine.

Yes, another dezl user reported the truckdown failure with this and the last map updates. It's definitely a problem on Garmin's side and they need to get it fixed.
Got it
Downloading new map update now....

Did you back the unit up?
Took A While
I installed Garmin Express. It took a few weeks before the .40 update showed up.

Thanks
Bricked C530
I did have a backup - thank goodness. Copied the files over = C530 no longer a paper weight. Tried again with the GE - different map area etc. same problem. Fixed C530 again and using the mapupdater - loaded the midwest etc onto the C530 internal memory. I had the whole US and then some on the 2 gig SD card and that was readable even when the C530 was screwed up. Everything working now - no "can't unlock maps" crap.
My Nuvi (work GPS) loaded just fine using GE.
Just part of my fun fighting with Computers weekend!
Too bad Garmin doesn't hire
Too bad Garmin doesn't hire some good people to build a good solid installer with proper options. It would certainly be a real bonus for us end users.

No problems
I have three devices, 760, 785 and 2460. Used Garmin Express without a problem. Garmin Express was very intuitive and guided me through the entire update. The 760 no longer had room for the Full North America maps, so the software gave me the option, to either choose a subset of the maps, or install to an SD card. I choose to put in a spare SD card and the maps installed perfectly. Matter of fact the maps on the SD card seem to be quicker. I did this all on a Windows 8 system with Comcast cable connection.
Installing on Nuvi 660
I am getting the message from GE that there is not enough space to install updates. I am given the option to "Select a region". However, no matter what region I select, the "Continue" button is never activated.
Anyone else have any success installing on a Nuvi 660?

Wow! That worked great! Now when I check which maps I have on the device, it states both 2013.30 and 2013.40. Do I just uncheck the 2013.30 now or leave them both checked? And once again THANKS Craig and Alan.

Large JCV file for Nuvi 765?
Has anyone posted a link to this yet for the 2013.40 update? The large file for the last map update was D1279160A.JCV, so I'm anticipating this next one would be D1279170A.JCV. I've searched for it both here on POI Factory and on Garmin's site with no luck. I'm hoping someone with a 765 like mine got in the update process and can post it...

Thanks CraigW for the reply - I saw that post, but does that file contain the same views, ie will they work in my Nuvi 765T even though it came from a different unit? Are they the photo views in the correct screen size, and not split view (which 765 does not do)?

In the thread, alandb says it's for the whole 7x5 series so it certainly should work. Yes, this large jcv file is not the split screen version. As far as I know, all nuvi models that display split screen JVs will get the correct jcv file when updating maps so they have no need to manually download this one unless they want to substitute a full screen JV for the split-screen one--something I would not want to do. The folks who really want this manual download are those of us with the older 8x5 and some of the 1xxx models.
How big is your current jcv file? Now that it jogs my memory, I thought the whole nuvi 7x5 series got the large file automatically during map updates. If your current jcv file is about 775MB in size, you have the large jcv already and need not manually download or copy the file to your 7x5 device.
In any event, as long as you keep a copy of your current jcv file, you can always experiment with this one and if you don't like it or it doesn't work, just go back to your backup copy. All that's lost is some download and tinkering time. Of course, you do have a full nuvi backup on a computer or DVD-R, right?
CraigW you were right, I have it.

Thanks for the great advice! I just updated to 2013.40 and sure enough, I already had the large JV file, 774.4MB in size, and the file name actually is D1279170A.JCV as I anticipated. If anyone did not get this due to space limitations or whatever, let me know, I'll post it somewhere with a link.
And, I did have all the files on the nuvi already copied on to my computer. But I found that this time, I was forced to install GarminExpress (until now it was only optional). It worked without a hitch, and now I see that it also provides a self contained unit backup function. I suppose I will use that in the future, rather than manually copying new files after an update.

That's great to have you confirm that your 7x5 got the large jcv. All 7x5 models should be getting that during map updates--they won't be given a smaller one if they're short on space.
If you use GarminMapUpdater
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={60f574f0-602d-11e2-f3fb-000000000000}
for map updates, you won't be forced to install or use Garmin Express.
Regarding Garmin Express' "backup" function. Very little of the nuvi is actually backed up with this feature so you should not assume it'll replace your manual full backup of the nuvi to a computer hard drive or DVR-R.

How is the content of the large JCV this time? I would hate to update and find (as has happened previously) that the "large" JCV is sorely lacking...again!.
We're all aware of some of the older nuvis not getting the large jcv during a map update, meaning that we have to manually download and install the large jcv file, but...
I've not heard of the large jcv file being described as "sorely lacking" before. What issue have you had with the large jcv in the past?
For this current almost 3-month-old map update (2013.40), Garmin has offered the large jcv from their web site and it was offered at essentially the same time the map update became available. Let's just hope that the 2014.10 map update due very soon will also have Garmin offer the large jcv for manual download as was done for the current map.

All these companies are the same. I waited months for a firmware download from Pioneer for their head unit and when it finally came out, the damn thing still didn't work! When will it be fixed? The 12th of never since they'll probably discontinue the product before fixing it!
