Map Updates... Yawn

So true. It's not like thousands, or even hundreds, or even dozens of new roads are being built where I live. A couple of years ago, they completed a freeway extension here and amazingly enough, it was included in the very next map update. But it's not like I needed my GPS to guide me along that extension. smile

The map updates have proven to be virtually worthless to me so far. And POI updates are unnoticeable. A grocery store that has been gone for years still appears in the list for example.

I'm not sure why everyone waits for these updates with baited breath. Maybe I am missing something.

I'm looking forward to the Map Update

So I can try to force it to reside on an SD card, as with all un-necessary files removed from my Nuvi 660 I don't think the next map upgrade would fit (Presently 25Mb free space)....

So Getting it to load and work on an SD card is the important thing now!!

I tested an SD Card only in a computer and MyGarmin said it was my Nuvi 660... So once the map update is available will proceed with the next steps...

Thanks to alandb for the information!!

Update

I'm just hoping that they get thier left and rights straightened out with the new map. On my daily travel to work as I approach the building where I work "Jill" tells me to turn left when the building is definately on the right. Just wondering when I actually need it to guide me somewhere can I trust which side of the road the location is going to be in advance?

There is an antique store:

There is an antique store: "Tobacco Barn" Outside of Ashville, NC where this happens, as well... GPS Says destination is on right, and it's on Left.

Let me know. I travel about 1K miles a week all over the country to places I haven't been to before. Next week I'm flying out to California, and driving around from San Diego to Sacramento, and at some point to Vegas as well. I do not feel like I need to update the instant it comes out. I will keep my maps updated as I go to a lot of newly developed areas, but don't see the need to rush.

Any more news as to when the new map update will be available?

Map Corrections - For those

Map Corrections - For those who say the POIs are out of date, be sure to correct them with Navteq, Garmin's supplier. It's takes quite a while to correct the issue and bake it into the update but eventually they respond.

http://mapreporter.navteq.com/

You can also report map errors here to Garmin (although I believe they simply forward them back to Navteq where they buy their maps):

Sometime Soon

Why is that? It could well be that other people reported the same items you did and they got corrected from those reports and not yours.

I am eager for this update.

I am eager for this update. Here in Southern Indiana, an 80+ mile stretch of brand new Interstate was opened just a month or so ago. I got to drive I-69 recently, and while it was glorious to have the highway practically to myself, it was really funny watching my Nuvi freak out - Gypsy thought I was plowing through corn fields at 75 mph!

smile

Are the maps available now?

Are the maps available now? I don't see them when I go to Garmin site under my profile. It is still showing older maps from Oct 2012. Secondly, the download link given in the first few posts does not work.

--
Iphone XR, Drivesmart 61,Nuvicam, Nuvi3597

On average, it's a three

On average, it's a three week wait from the time the manifest from the first post of the thread is posted to the server to when you can actually download it. Sometimes it's less and sometimes more. Sometimes the maps are pulled by Garmin because a problem is detected.

While I await the map update with anticipation, I'm not expecting major changes in my area as Garmin surprisingly added the road changes near me in the last update.

US maps are out?

You mean new version of map is showing on your account or you will try download even if it is not yet available?

We've gotten people

We've gotten people conditioned into thinking the map update is available when we talk about it. Of course it would help if the people asking if the map update is available or announcing they are going to download it actually read the thread.

Tips in preparation for map download

For those interested, on my Windows XP system I always do the following to ensure a proper download/install process.

  • Clear all internet files. Click start, run, and type %temp%. Delete all files and folders out of this directory. Do exactly the same a second time but type temp and then proceed to delete the files and folders.
  • Durning the download/install process ensure that your computer doesn't go into the sleep mode.
  • I also disable my screen saver, virus protector along with my firewall.

Personally I've had complete success in doing the above in the past and hope it'll help others. All constructive comments and suggestions are welcome smile

"Tips in preparation for map download"

Was wondering why you do all the things you listed before doing your map updates?

I have never had to do anything special when doing map updates on my Windows 7 32 bit desktop or 64 bit laptop computers.

I leave both my firewall and virus protection running and never have had any kind of map update problems occur on any of my Garmin units.
